novel set in a weird office. main character is really average but gets promoted, and suspect there is something off with the company. i think there is a powerful woman involved. weird incentives. sorry not much to go off. I thought it was called something like "The Company" or something like that.

not much adventure or anything, just kind of a weird aura and the writing was good, character relationships i think were interesting. american adult fiction.

The Business doesn't really match your plot, but it sounds like it has the right feel to it. (Also it's British adult fiction not American :)
