I thought briefly about giving it more of a chance, but after reading some reviews figured it wasn't worth my time. It's a first for me, I've never given up on a book on the first page before, but what an awful opener. So glad that so many felt the same way.

That's great Brenda, I was pleasantly surprised to find the connections to the stories in both books...re Fromelles :D

5 stars - had to wonder why I had never read it before!

I've kind of changed my choices around a bit and now have read my 3rd for this challenge and my second male author. We Are Not the Same Anymore . Not normally a fan of short stories, I quite enjoyed these and gave it 3 stars. Chris Somerville also happens to be my husband's creative writing tutor at uni, so I felt that I should read his book.

Ooh good Phrynne, if you can arrange it I would recommend sitting in a nice cosy spot....with ample supplies of chocolate (and tea in my case),... if it's raining even better, and read it in as few sittings as you can for max benefit. Enjoy ;D

Yes. I have read & really liked the 1st one (gave it 4 stars) but havent got the third in the series yet. :) I am a big fan of anything that covers the time periods of The Wars of the Roses & The Tudors.

Jennifer Byrne recommended this on The Book Club two episodes ago and I usually enjoy what she recommends. I just thought very "meh" about the story. Apparently according to a lot of reviews, I should read a couple of his others - this is by far not his best work, so I might add another of his books to my list before the end of the year...

Troll Mountain: Episode I by Matthew Reilly. I gave it 4*s, but I'm sure by the end of the trilogy I will give it 5. Hanging for the next instalment of this series. Finished it within an hour and a half I reckon on the train home. I was left salivating for more. He's so clever like that. I love Matthew Reilly.

Yes - I ran out of metals. I only know that Rhodium is more expensive than Platinum :)
