I think this is my next marathon project after I finish Babylon 5.

Was it the British version or the American one? I've only seen the former, but the first two seasons are the best.

Nope! It was "Almost Human." Sorry about that, I can never keep that stuff straight.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Next they'll have Almost Being Human, and you'll be screwed.

message 107: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh! The robot thing. I'd pretty much forgotten about that. I'm waiting to see if it gets a renewal, because if it does, I'll check it out, but if it's the one-and-done its ratings suggest it might be, it's probably not worth my time.

(Not that one-and-done shows can't be awesome, but they kinda have to start that way. Like Firefly.)

Understandable. I can see this one not doing too well. It's fine and all but...it's a cop procedural show...just set in the future. IDK if their budgets can handle the special effects so...I expect it will get cheesy and/or cancelled sooner than later.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I'm confused and I haven't watched any of them....

message 111: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I watched the first episode of Dr Who yesterday. I didn't realize it was available via Xfinity OnDemand. Anyway, I'm on the fence about it but I'm going to watch another episode tonight.

message 112: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments The first time I watched it I had no idea what I thought of it. I was lost. Confused. And I could barely understand the *funny* accents. But I knew I liked it.

message 113: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments My husband and I tried watching the very first Dr. Who and I had such a hard time getting past the cardboard. I just couldn't take it "seriously" enough to pay attention.

Had a similar experience the first time I tried watching the very first episode of Star Trek. I remember saying "OMG I can see the strings!!".

Oh no. I mean this was bad!!! Maybe not for 1963, but it was bad.
I will admit, though, that the first Eccleston episode was a bit cheesy, but its so worth it.

message 116: by Felina (new)

Felina I got about 3 episodes into the Eccleston episodes and gave up. I mean to go back but the farting alien inhabiting fat bodies episode was ridiculous.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments The first Doctor Who was a kids show. That said even as they did go for more "universal appeal" you had to have more imagination. The props were all they could do 9in the day. Still if you get past it they're good.

My kids still have problems watching black and white movies and some of the best movies ever made are black and white.

message 118: by Felina (new)

Felina My SIL had me watch an episode with those creepy stone angels. I really liked that one. I need to start with that Doctor. I think it was Barty Crouch. ;)

LOL At least watch from Eccleston's regeneration. And his name is David Tennant! I liked Eccleston, until I met David Tennant!! Tennant is my favorite Dr!!

message 120: by Felina (new)

Felina Ha ha. I will definitely get back to Eccleston (I think he's sexy) but I need to get my base in before I go back.

Felina Touche.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I know it's the "old series" but I'm a Tom Baker fan (I'd list Tennant as next). If you can get past the dated special effects you might try a few of those. The Key to Time series is good.

Sr. is in an episode, though. So is Moaning Myrtle, Filch and Dumbledore #2. And Jer thinks Madame Hooch may've been in one, too.

Baker was my first Dr. and holds a very special place in my TV watching heart! :)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments He's consistently the favorite Doctor among long time fans. Tennant I think may have passed him lately. Not surprising since TB was The Doctor in the '70s.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I guess I need to go into the corner of Nerd Shame, too. I only watched Rose and maybe one or two episodes after.

My mom was a huge Dr. Who fan. I'm gonna get her super gassed if she ever gets Wi-fi out where she lives.

I remember some of the older Dr. Who only as scary stuff on screen to make me scream. I will never go back to the beginning because I'm too scared. Cardboard or not, lol.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments My daughter has a Tshirt that says "Rip open reality and go get Rose".

Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "The first Doctor Who was a kids show."

No, it wasn't. It aired after 5 PM on BBC1, by which time the Beeb's children's programming was over. It was just meant to be family-friendly, so that everyone could watch it. It might have been marketed at kids in the US though, I dunno.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments There was a special this year on it. The BBC execs were looking for a kid's show and accepted Doctor Who. The original Doctor was his companion's grandfather till she left the show.

message 131: by [deleted user] (new)

Like I said, it might have been marketed differently in the US. I understand children's programming works a bit differently there. It wasn't a children's programme in the UK, though. It was a family show (which everything that airs on terrestrial TV before the watershed is).

There was a Doctor Who spinoff that was a children's show.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I'm not trying to argue Titania I'm simply going on what was on the special during all the 50 year anniversary programing. William Hartnell was popular with children and the program was a hit with school kids.

I'm not an authority it's just what was on the program, no big deal.

Paul Just watched the first episode of the new series of Sherlock (yes I'm a bad person for watching it on catch-up rather than when it first aired).

Absolutely loved it, I don't think that any explanation for the end of the last series would have completely lived up to the hype and I was very satisfied with what they came up with.

The rest of the show was exactly as good as I was hoping for, with just the right mix of light hearted moments and pathos. Can't wait for the next episode tomorrow!

message 135: by [deleted user] (new)

I watched that yesterday myself and really enjoyed it too. We saw The Hobbit on the same night which was entertainingly jarring.

I was apprenehensive about how they'd explain the end of the last season as well, so it was a relief to see how well they handled it.

Lol, I bet it was pretty strange (I'm glad I've already seen The Hobbit, otherwise I think it might have spoiled the majesty of Smaug if I was just imagining him in a deerstalker all the time :)
