Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I've been watching too. I have about 3 episodes left of the first season.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Yeah, then I'm just not remembering it. I didn't remember (view spoiler)

But, then, it's been awhile since I read it, and I didn't particularly like it, so there's no reason why I would remember it, really.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments That scene was actually changed. (view spoiler)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments Currently watching Netflix's adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Some fans complained about the casting for Count Olaf, but having seen a few episodes, I think Harris does a pretty good job. I'm actually a teeny, tiny bit unhappy over Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket, because the physical appearance of him so often while he's narrating is more obtrusive than I would have liked; it's also hard to separate his voice from his Family Guy work. ;) Also, a crucial plot point didn't happen as it did in the books; not much else has been changed, exactly, but a lot of filler has been added. Overall, I like it, though and I'm just ranting. I wish all episodes were up, instead of just the first 8 episodes that cover four books.

message 955: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm also watching that. I don't mind the casting, and quite like Warburton as Snicket, though I thought it was weird at first. (The kids are a bit iffy, but not bad. )

I agree about the filler. I feel like every book could be one hour episode instead of 2 45 minute ones...

I'm hoping that the one huge plot change means (view spoiler)

message 956: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (slff1) Have only watched Episode 1 of SOUE. Found it boring, Warburton intrusive (vs voice-over narration in the movie version), and the Wes Anderson style cinematography a rather cheap copy of Anderson's work. Doubt I'll continue.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I think the intrusive narration actually mimics the book style very well.

I do find it kind of boring and sloggy, though.

I'm a bit disappointed that (view spoiler)

message 958: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Man in the High Castle looks good, though I think I'm gonna pass. I tend to prefer lighter fare in my TV shows.

And there are so many shows that look good, or people tell me I should check out, and there's just not enough time...

That said -

I got about halfway through Luke Cage, but I'm not feeling it. I liked Daredevil and Jessica Jones, though I liked the first seasons of Daredevil best, but the pacing of Luke Cage is so slow... and then I read a bunch of reviews that were saying how the first half of the show was the best half and the ending was disappointing, and I sort of lost interest in continuing.

message 959: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Oh, and I don't care what the internet says - I loved the Sherlock finale.

message 960: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Yeah, I was worried about the show ever since they introduced his character in Jessica Jones and I found him boring in that. I was hoping he'd be more interesting in his own show, but it just hasn't happened.

Still looking forward to The Defenders, though.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I'm looking forward to The Punisher..though that may say about me than I'd like to admit now that I think of it.

message 962: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm curious about The Punisher. They handled his character well in Daredevil, I think, so we'll see how they build from that.

message 963: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Luke Cage is way, way dragged out. All the Netflix Marvel shows have seemed a few episodes too long, but LC drags way more then the others.

I mean, i liked it. But still, it definitely ranks below JJ and S1 of DD. I hope Iron Fist is better.

message 964: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Glad it's not just me.

message 965: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (slff1) Liked Jessica Jones a lot but could have been done in at least 4 fewer episodes. Luke Cage suffers from same prob. Like Nikki have watched through ep 7 and not compelled to finish. 2nd season of DD same problem. Marvel needs to learn that the story determines how many eps are required, not book 12 eps and then drag the story to fill.

message 966: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Nicki wrote: "I don't know if that was meant to be the show's last hurrah, but if it was, it was a worthy one, IMO. "

It's sort of up in the air. With them being so busy, this might be the end... but they also said they're not opposed to coming back for a 5th season if the opportunity arises.

They did say if they come back it'll be back to just solving mysteries, and not these big season arcs and personal dramas.

I think A LOT of TV and book series need to learn this...

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Hubby really liked LC and still felt the 1st half was better than the 2nd and that the show D R A G G E D itself along.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I just watched Luke Cage and thought they dragged it out some also. Too many episodes for the story they told. Still pretty good however.

Jackie (thenightowl) Did anyone watch the first episode of American Gods?

message 971: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Jackie wrote: "Did anyone watch the first episode of American Gods?"

Yes! Total mindfuck. Loved it.

message 972: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Agreed. I'm wondering how those who didn't read the book felt about it. I'm watching it with Jesus and he's understandably confused, but after a bit of explanation he got it. I don't think he would continue watching it if it wasn't for me. lol. Said it was like watching a Tarantino film.

message 973: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments "like watching a Tarantino film" should be a good thing.

message 974: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Not if you don't like him...

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Does anyone watch 'Poldark'?

I enjoyed the first Season, and just started the second...

But the second episode of the second season is killing me, because it's entered "Let's have a character act completely out of character and be a random douche for no reason and let's revisit a romance thread which we'd laid to rest... because drama!" territory...

And now I'm annoyed and scared to continue.

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments colleen the convivial curmudgeon wrote: "Does anyone watch 'Poldark'?"

I haven't yet, but my best friend loves it, and with there being a season three out soon/out recently (which I assume means people in general like it), I'm feeling like I should cave...

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I haven't found anything new I really like, watching NETFLIX when I watch. Right now on the last season my Murdoch Mysteries.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments We recently started watching Wynnona Earp. The first couple of episodes weren't great, but it's gotten better.

That said, I'm not 100% sure if I like the show... or if I just like Doc. :>

I watched Ep 1. Liked it alright but glad to hear that it gets better.

message 980: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Yeah. After Ep 1 in posted in the geek group I'm in on Facebook to ask if the acting got any better, 'cause damn...

And it has some common issues like (view spoiler)

But I'm liking it, overall.

message 981: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments So... I'm pretty into Wynnona Earp now. Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday is officially my new TV crush.

***

I've also been watching Broadchurch.

I heard so many great things about it... but I can't help feel a little underwhelmed. It's kind of overlong and ponderous, imo.

I think a big part of it is that half the fun of that show was watching it in real time and being able to speculate with friends about 'whodunit', and I'm missing that aspect of it.

Also, it doesn't help that I've been somewhat spoiled. I don't know who the killer is, but I do know that (view spoiler), which makes things a bit more ho-hum for me.

The acting is good... but the mystery itself just hasn't quite pulled me in.

message 982: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I still haven't watched any of Wynnona since that first one. I will, but damn I can't hardly have time to breathe lately.

I have been watching a little of From Dusk Til Dawn, the series. And I've been mostly keeping up with Fear the Walking Dead. About halfway through American Gods...

message 983: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Dusk Til Dawn was one of those series I thought about trying, and then just never got around to.

American Gods was so good. They definitely diverged from the book by the end, but I like where they took it. It's definitely it's own thing, though...

message 984: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I definitely say definitely too much...

message 985: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Definitely enjoying American Gods so far.

Dusk til Dawn is good too. I am pleased so far with the actors they got for the Gecko brothers. Those are big shoes to fill but they're pretty good. I'm only about 4 episodes in, and I'm really wondering how they will stretch it out to 3 full seasons.

message 986: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments We watched the adaptation of Cuckoo's Calling (the Rowling mystery series written as Galbraith) the past few nights - the series is called Strike.

It's a good adaptation. Follows the main story pretty well, while streamlining it for television, but while still doing a decent job with the characters.

message 987: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments So, I've been watching and rewatching 'Allo 'Allo on Netflix. It's one of my favorite sitcoms, dating back years now from when it aired on PBS. I haven't been watching many live-action shows besides that, though. I've been catching up on Puss in Boots and All Hail King Julian on Netflix; as for anime, I'm on Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond, Garo: Vanishing Line, Kino's Journey, Fairy Tail, The Morose Mononokean, and The Ancient Magus' Bride.

So anyways, Fuck Bran amiright?

GoT: (view spoiler)

I swear I'm just hate-watching now. It's sad.

message 989: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I dunno if you're also following the SFFBC GOT thread, but I and another person (Corinne) both saw articles today about how the writing styles of the source, and the last few seasons of the show have clashed, which explains a lot of the frustration that people are having. Here's the Twitter thread that I saw: https://twitter.com/dsilvermint/statu...

message 990: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments I literally only look at two groups when I come here, so haven't been following any other threads.

I agree that the styles did change mid-show. But I don't think that's really why things have played out as they have. I honestly think D&D are just phoning it the fuck in these last few seasons. Watching the after show after the episodes where they talk about stuff is just... wtf? Like, Dany forgot...

God I'm pissed at this show...

message 991: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh I'm sure that they are. I think they are tired of this show and want to move on, so they are trying to get to the outcome as quickly as possible to wrap it up and be done.

message 992: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments OH MY HOLY FUCK WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT BULLSHIT ENDING

message 993: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm sorry.

message 994: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah... I had some issues with it. But I'm not super upset about it... I just wish that they'd have given themselves, and viewers, a bit more time for the story to be right and all of the threads to properly be tied up at the end. As it is, there are just too many left dangling and yet it still feels like too "neat" of an ending.

message 995: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments The endings weren't earned. Everything was rushed. Shit made no sense.

Fuck...

message 996: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Anyone watching Star Trek: Picard?

message 997: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Ala wrote: "Anyone watching Star Trek: Picard?"

No.. I don't stream CBS, but I would, if there was another show on the platform I was interested in too. Maybe I'll snag it when The Stand comes out and binge a bunch of stuff at once. LOL

message 998: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Oh right. It's locked down on CBS streaming bullshit.

I forget these things sometimes...

ANYWAYS... >_>

I watched the first episode and enjoyed it. It looks and feels right. Loads of nostalgia. And I'm down for the (view spoiler) style story.

message 999: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments Hate when stupid stuff gets in the way of something important, like Picard :P

Sounds like a good deal for yall. Someday I might worry about which streaming thing has which shows, but for now I'll just enjoy the high seas.
