Riley Hawes | 2 comments Alone, afraid, and with no memory of his past life, a boy named Thomas wakes up in a mysterious box in the ground. Thomas can't remember anything but vague memories and his name. He is soon rescued and discovers his new home; a community of around 50 teenage boys living inside of a massive maze. All of them have also come through the box, and not a single one remembers anything about their life except their name. Thomas struggles to fit in at first, and is consumed by his desire to learn about who he is and how he got to the Glade. One of the few things he knows is that the maze seems very familiar...and he must find out why. But the maze is a deadly place, inhabited by mechanical horrors known as grievers. While trying to discover what is going on, it becomes apparent that there is more going on than what appears on the surface.

The Maze Runner was a very interesting and also a very relatable book. We have all been forced to stumble into a situation where we know nothing of whats going on and just want to go home, and the maze runner depicts this quite well. Most of the characters are fairly interesting, but some seem to lack depth as to what their motivations are. Thomas also doesn't really meet any more than a handful of the many boys in the Glade, which would have given the reader a better sense of how the community feels about what is going on. The story is a page-turner, and definitely captivates readers through the mystery of the maze and the struggles of Thomas and his friends trying to escape. It leaves many loose ends and doesn't explain some areas of the plot well, but it is the first book of a series so most of these will likely be accounted for later. In the end, it was an exciting and interesting book despite its minor flaws.
