Marshall Wilkerson | 3 comments Alright, everything I can remember on this (some minor spoilers):

Its a relatively long running fantasy series (at least 5 books). It must have been started before 2004, possibly even older.

The premise is that in a world full of islands, magic operates on a cycle, waxing and waning. Magic at the time the series starts is reaching the pinnacle of its strength, allowing weak/stupid/evil mages to accomplish cataclysms.

The main character is a young man who finds an amulet which contains the mind/soul of a king from the previous magical waxing. Guided by the dead king and another mage who was thrown forward in time, he and several of his friends set out to save the world.

Each book covers an island. There is a character who is very stoic and simple, always carries a large staff which he spins to work magic.

There is a woman who loves the main character, and goes evil when she is spurned by him. She learns how to work magic by weaving/sewing, does evil for a while, then comes to her senses and rejoins the company as a good guy. She ends up dating a pirate later on.

Alright, that's everything I can remember. if this rings any bells, it would be much appreciated if I could get some help identifying the series.

Marshall Wilkerson | 3 comments bump! Still no luck finding it. One detail I forgot, the woman who weaves magic is taught to do so by an evil Tree, except the tree has tentacles instead of branches.
