John | 3922 comments Not just Audible, but I have a large library TBR pile as well!

My main problem is time. I can't really listen at work (I'm allowed to, but my job is not well-suited to auditory distractions) so I 'm limited to evenings, weekends and holidays.

1. sales. 2. Sales. 3. Really good sales. 4. whispersync deals. 5. Sales. 6. You can only accumulate 6 credits, whether you are ready for them or not. 7. Even after putting your membership on hold now and then. 8. Even more whispersync deals.

I totally understand you though Tim. I joined in 2008 and I did just like you did. Now I have over 400 audiobooks.

John | 3922 comments I haven't forgotten about this, and it's coming up to the time to actually set up the folder. So ... I thought there'd be a thread where each interested member gives an introductory post with the status of their TBR backlog and such, the personal goal, and whatever else seems relevant. Then we can start a monthly thread, similar to the way the books-in-progress has been. However, comments would relate to the challenge specifically, such as:

I Was a Werewolf Nerd! (1/25) -- funny as hell, I should never have waited so long!

The Rhino Lady: My Life as an African Safari Guide (2/20) -- scenery was well done, but the writing wasn't all that exciting, could've waited a while longer.

Sound OK?

That sounds great John! Thanks so much!

Sounds wonderful, Fred Astaire ;)

(Grumpus, not to worry. You're not Ginger Rogers. You're Sammy Davis Jr.)

message 57: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine I love this idea. I actually just looked at my library and realized those sales they keep having are killing me. audible makes it too easy to get new books lol

Thanks Grumpus

LOL'g here. I am always amazed when I manage not to buy during a sale - the current BOGO is one I'm managing to avoid - hurray!

This sounds good to me. When will it be set up?

message 63: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3922 comments Sometime soon - hopefully today for the "I'm a bookholic and here's what a backlog I've got ..." introductory portion at least. I'd like to hold off on starting the actual January thread until New Years Eve. Also, if you finish a long-time TBR book anytime after right now (today/tomorrow), it counts as your first entry if you'd like; ones started this year and finished after Wednesday morning after definitely okay, too!

message 64: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 316 comments Just finished Night Rounds by Helen Tursten (Swedish), not great but pretty good, 3 and 1/2 stars maybe. I'm starting Bellwether by Connie Willis which has been sitting on the TBR shelf for quite a while.

message 65: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3922 comments Just a reminder that the thread for TBR books read has not yet officially started.

message 66: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pjaye) | 447 comments Why did you delete my post?

Since when is there censorship and I'm not allowed to say what I think?

That really pisses me off.

message 67: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3922 comments The January thread was added within a few minutes as per your request, which seemed pushy to me, so it was deleted. It's perhaps the third or fourth comment I've deleted in two years as a moderator.

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

John and Grumpus put a great deal of work into this forum. They help make it a happy place to be. Emphasis on HAPPY.

message 69: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pjaye) | 447 comments Pushy?
A reminder that there are many time zones in the world and that you have members here in all of them is "pushy"
Really?

Isn't Goodreads meant to be for members from all over the world? Or do you just want to cater to American members?
What would have been the problem with opening the thread and saying - "here it is, when it's 2014 where you are, feel free to start posting"

I thought your comments were very dismissive of your global members and as a moderator you should know better, then to add to that, when you get called out you just delete the evidence.

He's a volunteer, not your employee. And on that, I will bow out and let John handle this.

message 71: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3922 comments I'll let these comments stand to speak for themselves.

Patricia (pjaye) | 447 comments Jennifer (Wolf Queen of the Outer Regions) wrote: "He's a volunteer, not your employee."

Where did I even hint at him being employed by me?

I was simply stating that as a moderator of a group with members from all over the world it would be prudent to be sensitive to that and not run everything only on an American time scale.

That will be all from me, deleted my posts and since I'm obviously unwelcome, will not participate further in the challenge.

Jeanie | 4024 comments Our moderators have done a great job setting up and maintaining this group. Thank you John and Grumpus for establishing such a great group where audiobook lovers can spread the love and respect for each other.
Happy New Year and here's to more love and happiness in 2014!

Shirley (shirleythekindlereader) | 493 comments For goodness sake tsk tsk tsk !!!

Thanks for even considering the challenge.

message 77: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 316 comments I just went through the ITunes list of my audiobooks and was appalled to find 25 TBRs, counting several started-but-not-yet finished books. Some, like Wizard, The Story of Nicola Tesla I'm still working on now and then. A couple, like the VERY SCHOLARLY edition of Mark Twain's Autobiography I should just abandon. I may ask Audible to take back Laurie King's newest book, The Bones of Paris. I've loved most of her books but this one gives me the creeps.

message 78: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 316 comments I took the first of Cleo Coyle's Coffee House mysteries,On What Grounds, off the TBR shelf. Judgement, not bad but overly cute and featherweight. OTOH maybe it's unfair to judge an author by the first book. Some of my favorites have had clunky beginnings.

Let me say a word on behalf of the Coffeehouse series... the first few books are okay, but it's around the fourth or fifth book where the series hits its stride. In fact, the last four or five books have been extremely good. One storyline involved the firefighters of NYC and held a poignancy in this post-9/11 world that was very powerful. I know not everyone will like a series, but the klunkiness of this one does smooth out.

Shawn (shawn123) | 73 comments Great idea. I have a RIDICULOUS number of books that I have purchased and haven't even bothered to download from both audible and and a selection of other vendors. Count me in. Part of the reason for this backlog is that I moved across the country and took a new job late August and have JUST started to find the time and energy to read again (and listen to audio books) for pleasure.
