Amanda | 380 comments Because I just woke up and my brain is a little befuddled ( not finished my coffee yet ! ) For several months I have allocated books for all of the shelves, but I am not meeting all of the categories. Can you read more than the twelve books, so that you can read books that meet the other criteria ( ir , use the monthly letter, read in the correct time frame ) but are only meeting the category rather than month criteria ? A bit like the free shelf reads for those times you've used up your category criteria.

I AM talking about task completion here. So, to meet criteria for ALL shelves and categories, I might need 15 books on a particular month, rather than 12.

As I understand it, Amanda, you can. In June, for letter R, I have added an extra book to meet the multiple author category. I have 12 books that meet the shelves and all of the categories except the multiple authors, which necessitated an extra, 13th book.

Just checked the rules and #5 reads:

A Qualified Book must have the month's initial and
a. be on the month's Shelf; or
b. match the month's Category.

The shelf "or" category confirms that you can read for just a category.

Amanda | 380 comments That was my reading too, Amy, which I took to mean that to complete a month you could read as many books as was necessary to meet both lists.

Nice when you get books that hit 3 categories ( which I can usually swing a couple of books each month ), but I often have one or two left over ( but, as I often don't know if the have multiple POV or what the cover looks like before I start reading, there is still a chance that they may still be ticked off ) . I do know that the multiple author one in June was not going to match any shelves, so I have a book in mind that doesn't match shelves, but will work otherwise.

Thanks for your help :)

My pleasure :-)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1223 comments Thanks Amanda and Amy for the reminder that we could do that - I'd forgotten :0)

Amanda | 380 comments Ok, we know that you can read books that don't match the shelf, but match a category only, but for these books, can they still cover multiple categories ?

I have all my shelves for P, but not all my categories. I am reading The Pure Gold Baby, and it doesn't match a shelf but it matches cat. h & j, neither of which I have allocated. Can I use it for both, or only one ?

Thanks for any clarification!

oops, sorry I completely missed your Q, Amanda. I don't have a working computer at home so haven't been online for the weekend.

Yes, one book can match up to 3 categories (Rule #6)

Amanda | 380 comments Cool, now I can go add it to that month and knock off a couple more categories ! ;)

Grace (jetzin) Hello

Does published in 1980-1999 include editions published during that period? Or does it mean first published in that period?

:) Thanks

Amanda | 380 comments Hi Grace,

First published is always the rule when you see that in a challenge :)

What happens when a book has no shelves listed on its main page?

See https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
I know not a lot of people have read it, but just from the comments listed below the book, I can see there are at least 4 shelves chosen by people other than me. (I've put it on 5 shelves). But the shelf list isn't shown.

Is it permissible to count it for a basic shelf I already always use, like fiction? (e.g., I wouldn't put it on mystery-and-crime or espionage and expect to count it, since those aren't shelves I usually use.) But if I know it's on fiction because I put it there, does that make it ok?

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1223 comments I'm working out my books for December (can't believe the year is almost over), and I don't suppose we could have the final categories a bit early...

Dec Card is open til Jan 31st so you probably won't want to read these til Jan so you can read as much for other months' cards in Dec as they're only open til 31st Dec.
