32% - Its okay so far. The writing is a little too simplistic for my liking which also annoyed me in the first book. The characters are really cute. I like Tyson. Annabeth and Percy annoy me a little. There kind of immature but I guess that's mainly because they're twelvies. I like the action so far too. 46% - (view spoiler)[I have so much trouble taking Luke seriously. I cannot imagine hating him or even begin to think of him as evil in the slightest. Yes, I know he did all that stuff for Kronos and all that but he's played by Jake Abel in the movie (which I actually haven't seen yet!) and he's one of my fave actors. He cute, sweet, funny guy and that's how I picture him in here! I mean he played Ian O'Shea in The Host! How can you possibly think of him as evil after that?? Help! :)) (hide spoiler)]

100% - Finished this earlier this morning. I liked it but there something that just doesn't work for me. Maybe because Percy is practically a twelvie and the writing is a tad simplistic. Also while the action is great, it gets pretty repetitive. Find bad guy. Get captured. Get miraculously saved. Find bad guy. Get captured. Get miraculously saved. Rinse and repeat. I have to save I loved Tyson. He was a great character. I do think that Percy has grown up a little but his and Annabet's quibbling is awfully immature and not at all amusing.

(view spoiler)[I almost cried when I thought Tyson was dead but then I realised its a Rick Riordan book and he wouldn't be dead. Then I almost cried with the ending. Tyson is so cute with that shield and him having to go and Percy finally accepting him as his little brother. Adorable!

I didn't think the Cyclops part was that good. I enjoyed the tornado thing but the guinea pig lady was obviously a trap and was a little ridiculous. I enjoyed the siren song part. Poor Annabeth! And have to say that Percy's powers are pretty cool. Loved Rainbow too. (hide spoiler)]

Killer ending. Big cliffhanger. Overall, I am excited for the next book. :)) I have to order it from the library but when it gets in, would you like to buddy read it together?? :))

Okay, I'm up to page 106. (view spoiler)[ Tyson is the cutest freaking thing!!! Oh my Zeus I want to be his best friend, and just hug him all the time. But wow Percy's dumb. Seriously, he didn't work out that Tyson was magic? Even after he stopped the flaming dodgeballs and cracked a wall and wasn't hurt by either? I didn't know exactly what he was, but I certainly knew he wasn't human. Good job Annabeth for saving the day! Then there's the new camp director. I know, the whole point is for me to hate him, and it's working! He's just dumb and mean for no reason. He has no reason to pick on Percy whatsoever, so can he just stop it please? I'm glad they want to leave, the sooner they escape the better (hide spoiler)]

Page 200. Nearly finished! (view spoiler)[ Just after we had that conversation about loving Tyson AND HE DIED! But then he came back again, and all is right with the world :) The main thing that's bothering me is that hardly any of it is original, it's just a modern version of the Odyssey. We had to study that in class, so I know the story fairly well. I mean, the way they escaped Polyphemus' cave was literally exactly the same. I knew they'd be fine, because I knew how the Odyssey ended. And Grover unravelling the weaving was what Penelope did when she was trying to avoid getting married. Some of the stuff seems to be original, but then I don't know anything about the Jason they keep mentioning, so I guess a lot is stolen from there. It's really starting to bug me (hide spoiler)]

Actually what bugs me the most are the constant elements.
(view spoiler)[I know we have it in Harry Potter too, which by the way will always be my favourite series forever, but in Percy we have literally the same things, like he's with his mom, then she drops him somewhere, then he's not coming back and goes to camp (I'm talking about third book too but if it happens all the time I don't really think it's a spoiler) then when he's at the camp something happens or someone is missing (yes in third book someone is missing too) then he's not allowed to go on the quest but he does that anyway (third book) then he succeed and come back to camp and there is a chariot race or catch the flag and stuff and everything is okay, and the party starts all over again in next book. Oh and don't forget about the pieces of (drums and smoke) THE PROPHECY. I mean, I like this series, I like Greek Gods and stuff and in second book I really learned a lot about mythology and I really really appreciate that but it's just the same pattern every time that bugs me. But yeah, I've read Odyssey too. I don't really remember it very well (I've read it in school about 11 or 12 years ago, so don't judge me for not remembering it) but I know it's almost the same. Yeah... But if Riordan is borrowing from myths I guess that was the plan. To retell Jason's journey all over again. Maybe not that original but still. And by the way. I liked second book more than first one, I don't really know why, maybe because I haven't seen the second movie so there was nothing distracting me. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ well I can actually understand why Percy is so awful to Tyson. I mean, he's a teenager, everyone laughs at him because of Tyson - you obviously know how cruel kids could be. But we're looking at Tyson from our perspective - as an adorable and lovely creature. So yeah, Percy wants him to back off cause his hideous brother is embarrassing him with his love, devotion and ponies. I really get that. But still, I love Tyson and I would love to have a brother like him. But it takes time to see stuff like this. You see, my friend from school has an older brother with down syndrome and I remember how cruel we were to him when we were kids (we were 7 or 8 then). He just wanted to play with us and talk and hug and stuff and because we were kinda popular then we didn't want him to ruin our social position at school with his clumsiness. That was cruel as hell. We actually understood what kind of mean bi***es we were when we were 11. HE JUST WANTED US TO BE HIS FRIENDS AND HE LOVED US NO MATTER WHAT. But it takes time to understand stuff like that especially for the kid. But what really bugs me with Percy is that he felt protective and caring for Tyson when they were at school and even at the beginning when they were at the camp but when it turned out that Tyson is his brother he started to pushing him away. Like being friends with Tyson is okay but being family with him is the worst thing in the world.

I liked that last fight scene on the boat. Good quick thinking from Percy for once, instead of always Annabeth. And Thalia is alive!! That was always going to happen, but it's still exciting, because she seems cool :)

And to be honest I have a problem with Percy, I don't think I like him, I love Annabeth, I love Grover, I even love Luke but Percy? I liked his character in the movies - probably only because I like Logan Lerman, he's cute :D but in the books? Well, maybe I need more time.

Well, it's not that I hate Percy (and I always like villains the most) but I don't particularly like him either. I just think he feels sorry about himself all the time, like everything is always wrong (not having anyone else in Poseidon's bedroom - bad, having someone's in Poseidon's bedroom - bad, he doesn't have a brother - bad, he has a brother - bad, he losts his brother - bad, Poseidon doesn't talk to him - bad, Poseidon talks to him - bad) I just wanna punch him most of the time. But still, he's not THAT bad. He could be worse :D I hope it'll change during next books - that would stop act like a child and start acting like half-blood, teenager. 'Cause yeah, I think he acts like a child and I think he needs Annabeth to tell him what to do all the time and when she does he doesn't want to listen to her anyway. But you know. It's just me :D On the other hand - Grover - now, he's cool. Definitely my favourite from "the good ones". Oh, and Pony. Let's just not forget about good Chiron. When I first read that Tyson called Chiron a pony I started to giggle like and idiot. And I started imagining how would it look like if Tyson started to comb Chiron's tail and put some bows in it and maybe paint a little rainbow on his bum. You know... My Little Pony kind of thing. Oh Clarisse isn't that bad you know. At least I don't think she's that bad. Actually I quite like her. She's got the guts. She's a badass!

And to be honest if I were Clarisse I'd probably act the same. I mean - I have a problem with Percy too. And if this little guy wanted to take all the quests for himself I'd probably stand up and fight - why everything has to be his? Everybody should be equal (yeah, I know world doesn't work that way but it should) so everyone should have a chance.

It doesn't bother me that Clarisse got the quest, or even that she's gutsy. I admire that. I just hate that she's a bully and still gets what she wants. At the chariot race, she did nothing to help until after she'd won, then yelled at Percy and Annabeth because they were defending camp and she was too busy yelling about them being cowards to bother asking what they were doing. She just gets on my nerves.

You see, I have this problem with this series. 'Cause I know that these are books for kids, I really get that but I think that Riordan went too far with it.

What I mean is:

Percy - all good but obviously have to has his flaws. For me he's a total pussy trying to act like he's cool. And he's a bully too - the way he treats his brother? Even if he's not saying it out loud we know what he's thinking about. But he's obviously good.

Grover - great guy who is obviously good and doesn't do anything wrong.

Annabeth - she's so smart and so cool and so good and without flaws.

Luke - obviously bad and whatever he does even if it looks like it's a good thing it really isn't. Whatever he does is obviously bad.

Clarisse - obviously bad character again. Did she do anything good? I can't remember. Selfish, egocentric. Whatever she does must be bad because she is a bad character.

And these characters are flat because of it. It's like this world is bulit only on black and white. Someone can be only good or only bad, nothing in the middle.

And that's why I have a problem with this series. I just don't believe in its characters. That's not how world looks like even if it's a fictional world.

Yeah, exactly. Seriously, even kids should know that world is not made of only good and bad people. That everyone are in between. I just need someone to tell me that the rest of the series is not like this 'cause I probably won't finish it.
