Challenge 6: GR Choice Awards 2013 - 12 books
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

First book of 2014.
All about Southern (American) sisterhood and exclusivity, search for individuality, identity and partners and lessons on how to spoil your personal growth and opportunities even when everything is apparently smooth and hassle free. I could not sympathize with anyone here. They muddle up their privileged lives just for the heck of it. An average book, just readable.
This fulfills the following challenge criteria

Contemporary genre - Challenge 2

Chinese food culture and customs are discussed in simple terms so as to enable even novices to understand and enjoy. I loved the food descriptions and the slowly unfolding cooking process with emphasis on texture, presentation, smell as well as taste. It is primarily a fiction dealing with the search of an American widow for the supposedly illegitimate half chinese daughter of her husband who had an accidental sudden death a year ago. Margaret, the wife, a food columnist for a local magazine cannot believe that her husband would cheat and forays to China to find the truth. She meets Sam, American-Chinese who is an aspiring Great Chef and gets introduced to Chinese food culture step by step. There are excerpts from a book called the last chinese chef, written by Sam's father, who has given up his culinary career and China to lead a non-nondescript life in America. On the whole it was an immensely pleasing read. Being a vegetarian limits me from tasting all the exotic Chinese food, but nevertheless I enjoyed the cooking and the food mentioned in this book.

Am IMPRESSED. Confession - am not a die hard mythology fan. I sometimes get bored by the various stories and sub stories. But this was a refreshing read. Was more like a precise guide to Mahabharatha. It made me think, made me understand many incongruities in the story and now that I see the characters as ordinary people I like them more, even the Kauravas. This was a mine house of less known facts. At least 1-2 illustrations per page, which made reading pleasanter. Many thoughts which prodded and poked at my sleepy mind and conscience. Spent a wonderful few days with this book. A definite future reread

Can't believe that this book was Man Booker prize winner of 1975. Found nothing incredible. Was an okayish sort of book, a bit dragging at times, but readable. Olivia, the central figure is a lady married to a British working in minor administrative capacity in Colonial India. She is slightly bored and is introduced to the Nawab, a dashing hero in her eyes. The Nawab has many faults, including a liking for males as well as females, greed and self-indulgence, but Olivia is slowly drawn towards him and finally abandons Douglas, her husband, who is quite insipid. The story begins when Olivia's step grand daughter comes in search of her legacy, acquainted with Olivia via letters left to her by her sister. She too falls for incredible India, forms a couple of liaisons and choses to stay there for a longer period. The India described in this book is quite exotic, with a sub-standard class of citizens and full of filth and poverty. I cannot identify it with the India of today. Maybe I have not traveled far enough, or India has considerably changed.

[challenges fulfilled
1. GA--H-- ------
2. contemporary (4th genre)
6. GR choice award nominee]
Not as good as my expectations. A loosely linked tale of many lives, the central point being the seemingly unjust separation of a brother and a sister at a tender age. Liked the initial half of the book, but had to compel myself to read the latter half. The story is based in Afghanistan, Paris and the US, and as usual deals with injustice, travails of life and love lost.

An Alex Cross thriller after a long while. I like following the lives of my favorite characters - and Alex Cross is one among them. Milo too. Here, a middle aged female teacher who privately tutors rich students for SATs is found dead, covered with solid ice in her bath tub. There is a tussle between homicide and suicide. Milo Sturgis is given the task to prove either way, accompanied by his friend, the private psychologist Alex Cross. They delve into the case and come up with many nasty truths. Finally the mystery is solved. Was a taut thriller which was interesting throughout, except perhaps the penultimate few pages. Proclivities of students as well as teacher was shocking

Was a gruesome read, the topic focussing on paraphilia. The story unfolds with 3 women who have escaped a psychotic Psychology Professor who had imprisoned and tortured them (emotionally and physically) for years, before they could somehow escape. The fourth was murdered and body was disposed off at an unknown location. One of the ladies, Sarah was close friends with the dead girl, Jennifer. Ten years later her escape, Sarah who is living under false identity comes to know that the mad professor is about to be granted parole. All the sleeping demons within her wake up and she seeks the other two who are now leading seperate lives, to help her to fix up the professor, so that he's not granted parole. Their uneasy coalition and further discoveries lead them to religious cults, BDSM clubs, female slavery, peculiar people and deserted areas. It was a horrible topic, the more so, because the torture wasn't overtly described and too much was left to fertile imagination. The plot was good, but execution had something wanting. Hence only a three star rating.

It was a wonderful read. I should read more of Murakami. I just love his prose. Too many things to chew upon and reflect, opportunities for introspection, moments where one feels the perfect happiness which comes only with having a good book in hand....
But he is not for the faint hearted, or the rigid orthodox. There are many instances of nearly perverse sexual behavior - in thought as well as deed, almost all characters are eccentric in their thoughts, actions and interactions. Slight metaphysical tinge to certain events is another feature.
What I love most is the numerous references to other people's work - be it books or music. I feel like attempting to read/listen to each and everything mentioned.
Norwegian Wood deals with various hues of love focusing on lovers and friends. It shows us how friends and lovers can influence one to some extent. It does a take on unrequited love and feelings.
I enjoyed reading the tale as told by Toru Watanabe, the main character, an unassuming man of 39, who ruminates on his life and events of sixty-nine, when he was nineteen years old. His dead friend Kizuki, whose girlfriend Naoko later features prominently in his life, his room mate Storm Trooper, almost-friend Nagasawa, Midori, a free and uninhibited girl who later becomes his lover, older friend Reiki, all lent this book a unique flavor intermingled with tragedy, which has already happened and is waiting to happen.

So true Smitha! I felt the same reading this book! And do listen to that Norwegien Wood song! It has nice guitar and sitar combination.. Though it is a humorous song..
Yes, I;ve listened to it. And do you know how it came into being? Lennon was having an affair which he didnot want his wife to know. He composed the song to let out his steam. In the song, Norwegian wood stands for the cheap wood from which furniture is made.

Haha. Yes I know the story. I read its Wikipedia. Funny one :D :D

Kafka on the Shore-5/5
Warning: all characters are unusual and eccentric. Don't expect anything normal from them.
Another wonderful book by Murakami. This book is more into magical realism and metaphysical theorizing as compared to The Windup Bird chronicles and Norwegian Wood - the other books of this author which I've read. Kafka, a 15 year old boy runs away from home, perhaps in search of his mother and sister, who deserted him when he was a mere boy of 4. His father seems cold natured and elusive. He has an imaginary companion, Crow, whose advice he follows in times of internal and external strife. Nakata is a brain damaged man who has the ability to talk with cats. One day he is forced to kill a man, who in turn is a cat torturer. Nakata is in search of something, which he himself doesn;t realize fully. He meets Hoshima, a truck driver, who soon becomes his friend. Meanwhile Kafka meets Oshima and Seiki, managers of a small, private, rural library, who give him place to stay. In the final third, all these characters come together, lots of mysterious and unexplainable things happen, and finally we are left with a sense of wonder and awe, though there is an incomplete feeling.
I thoroughly enjoyed the prose, the ideas, the irony and the seemingly impossible events narrated so as to seem almost possible. It is the soothing prose and narrative style, not the story, that matters in Murakami books.

even last year i got inspired and set target of 40 which kind of worked out if we include non-English books.
so this year targeting 20 English books.

I have come across two trash booker prize books, Oscar & Lucinda & FInkler question! I don't know what the general opinion is, on these two books.

It was a refreshing read - a tinge of humor amidst all the serious books I've been reading nowadays, though the events itself are not funny at all. This book made me laugh out loud,as well as mull profoundly over the modern life. Sid, who considers himself a happy-go-lucky guy is on the verge of separation from his wife and a fifteen year old marriage (at one place it is mentioned as 10 years - which is confusing) He has a couple of best friends, an irritating boss, a bright future in the toilet cleaner related company he's working in, and gets to meet a lovely young divorcee mother. Sid is at cross roads as regarding to his professional and personal future and commits a few mistakes and finally puts his life together. It was a breezy read, very easy upon the eyes and mind, easy flow of story making all the characters believable most of the time. I liked all characters, including Mandira, his soon to be ex-wife who came across as more human than bitchish. Would recommend it to all who love an easy read with a tinge of humor, especially to Rom Com fans.

Seems like the easy breezy read I need to pick up. I'm struggling a bit with my reading. Started a couple of books but not getting to them regularly. May be this quick paced one will up the momentum a bit for me.
yes, its quite an easy read. But don't expect life changing quotes or introspective events. I enjoyed it a lot.

I never did like Peter with all his airs, and in this book I positively hated him. Rest of the kids behave like wimps. The only person I like is Susie, who is unfortunately shunned by the gang, including her brother Jack, who should have been more friendly to her rather than neglecting her for the gang's sake. The mystery too is very limp. All in all, an avoidable book.

Asweh it was hutious, but only till a few pages towards the end.
I HATED the end. The story is told in the colloquial voice of a 11 year old boy, who lives in a dangerous locality and is exposed to gang violence and prejudices. He lives with his mother and elder sister after emigrating to London, his father and younger sister left behind in Ghana (?). The book starts with a boy being murdered, and our boy Harrison, along with his friend Dean tries to solve the crime. Dean, a fan of CSI is a great help in mapping out the path to solve the crime. But nothing comes easy - they are exposed to lots of things eleven year olds should not be exposed to. Finally they sneak upon the murderer, but with what results. Lots of words which I don't understand, events which are slightly hazy and a pigeon who talks (or is it the boy's imagination?). Still, I enjoyed reading the book.

Updates from the re read
Found it a marvelous and lyrical narration of the vagaries of an abnormal mind. Pedophilia and Hebephilia are difficult to digest topics. Here Nabokov has successfully managed to show the life of a pedophile, and how his proclivity destroys his life in the end. Humbert, is the hero-villain who narrates this tale of abnormal love and infatuation of a middle aged man towards a 12 year old girl, and how he manages to destroy both their lives in the process. It was magical, lyrical, very touching. I hated Humbert the humbug in most parts of the book, but couldn't help in a thought creeping in - what if we discard the element of hebephilia, then Humbert is a really clever, articulate, learned man, who would be able to hold people captive with his words and rhymes. He had a great talent of playing with words, our Humbert. But his abnormal trait just eclipsed all his better ones. This is a book definitely worth reading, would recommend to all, even the faint hearted ones, as whatever disgusting act that occurs in this book is sugar coated with beautiful, ethereal words, mesmerizing the reader.
Feb 2011
this is my first book by Nabokov and I have mixed feelings about it. The language was musical, nonsensical, humorous, enjoyable. The names chosen for the hero-villain and his child amour were superb - Humbert and Dolores/Lolita - the names are lyrical and I can roll my tongue around them easily and repeatedly. The circumstances were horrendous. The way the lecherous middle-aged man entrapped the child was horrible and mesmerizing.
Only towards the end did I know that Lolita's mother was killed. All along I was sure that it was a fortuitous accident which enabled the horrible pedophile to ensnare the child.
By two-thirds of the book I can almost see and feel the villain deteriorating in mind and body. His ramblings and spoonerism increase, he plays with words, often nonsensical ones.
I hated the main characters, even the girl child Lolita, who seemed precocious to me, even before she was seduced. I hated what they all turned out to become. I also felt a little bit of pity creeping in amidst my feelings of revulsion and horror.
I will not wish upon such an acquaintance on anyone
This book has moved me profoundly. If I had a daughter I would have fiercely protected her and looked upon all males who interacted with her with jaundiced eyes.
I will not forget Lolita for a long time to come.

A tough subject to read, despite being fictionalized. Story of cancer afflicted teens, who strive to live a day at a time. Hazel and Augustus meet, fall in love and try to carve a niche of their own in their dismal cankerous world. The book focuses upon their day to day struggle with pain, disability, and the knowledge that death is just a whistle call away. Isaac, another teen is battling with his woes of losing his girl friend and eye sight almost simultaneously. Their parents are helpless in their inability to put things right. A dismal subject, a harrowing read. Made my heart literally feel heavy and sick. I was psychologically incapacitated to the extent of being unable to go about my routine. One has to be lion hearted or totally callous to discount this book.

15. The Tennis Party by Madeleine Wickham - 4.5/5
Liked it a lot... much better than her Sophie Kinsella novels.
Central theme - a tennis party organized by a nouveau riche couple, inviting their rich as well as not-so-rich friends, who end up being an odd bunch. Tennis is of course, played, but more than that various hurts and strives and secrets simmer out and explode. I love delving into the lives of (fictional) people rather than just know superficial details about them. This book helped me to indulge in my voyeurism. There are a couple of cute, precocious kids, to add to the melee.

Another decently paced family melodrama. Was quick and easy to read. Something light in between serious books. Two families are on vacation, and end up sharing the same villa by accident. Tempers fly, edges are chaffed and secrets emerge. Loved all the characters, especially Amanda and Jenna, who are as different as chalk from cheese.

Very much average. Deals with unplanned premarital pregnancy and its aftermaths. The young lady conceives after casual unplanned sex, decides to keep the baby, against the wishes of the father. Her steady boyfriend (not the baby's dad) and his mother are quite supportive of her decision. Parents are initially aghast but soon reconcile with her. The plot looks artificial and pre conceived, the circumstances of bringing up the child very peculiar. The baby behaves like a robot, and I never come across any hurdles that I faced when I bought up my son ( with the full army consisting of my husband, parents, in-laws and nanny). Am staying away from YA books for a while.

Dragged a lot, and I was happy to finish it off at last. This book comes somewhere in the middle of the series of "chemical murders' or something like that, but was my first book. A young lady is seemingly being terrorized by her psycho boy friend as well as a colleague she loathes. And hell breaks out when they both are found dead (not simultaneously). Her mother's friend sets in to investigate and comes across a scam. Thereafter the plot deteriorates. First half was interesting. But after that, whenever I would open the book, my eyes would close. Sheer perseverance made me finish it.

My best loved genre, and I enjoyed the tense narrative in the beginning, but towards the last quarter things changed. The tautness of the narration was lost, the motive became irrational and I had to resort to speed reading.
on the whole, a recommendable psychothriller but not very riveting or outstanding.

Finally ended the series. My liking for the series progressively declined, the third one being least liked. I could not have tolerated a fourth book. This one ties up most loose threads, Pan Am as such is destroyed, or perhaps not? The autocrats are taken care of, the Hunger games totally banned, and Katniss and Peta decide upon a non-controversial life. Gayle is still the warrior, bent upon setting things right. The epilogue of the book gives us a glimpse of the future events

A marvelous psychological thriller which invades the depths of troubled human minds. As usual, Sophie Hannah has created a mind blowing piece of work. I was intrigued throughout and for once, the ending did not disappoint. Deals with the world of artists and their lives.

Wonderfully enlightening book. So many things which we take for granted. Feeling in awe of the young lady who fought a valiant battle risking her life.
The book is written in a simple, matter-of-fact language, and may be a little boring for those who are not that well versed in the history of Pakistan and terrorism. I liked it a lot as I always wanted to know how terrorism survives and to what extent it affects life of common people, who are not much bothered by religion, sects or politics and who believe in humanity and kindness rather than in certain rigid set principles. India, of course, is not shown in a very good light, as is expected, but then India and Pakistan have been fated to be enemies from the day these two Independent countries were conceived. So far, I was under the impression Pakistan is not as backward as Afghanistan and the middle east when it comes to the security and freedom of women, but I was woefully shown to be wrong.
I wish there is a sequel after a decade or so to highlight what Malala does to further the cause of female education.
