ABANDONED. Creatures that lived in trees and use magic to transform

Does anyone remember a book about these rodent kind of creatures that lived in trees and went to this school to learn magic? They learnt some magical transforming ability that their race used to keep safe. There was this one guy that was the best at it and he was the main character's older sister's love interest. At some part of the book they find out he had been cutting off the bark from the trees they put their dead in and that was the reason why he was the best. I think they banished him after that. If you can help it would be much appreciated.

I read it a couple of years ago and it was probably for teens because I found it at my school library. The cover was purple and it had a picture of one of the creatures on front and he looked like a squirrel and he was smiling kind of awkwardly.
