I've been thinking about this awhile. Did DFW share Himself's view of the Actors' Studio style? The more I've analyzed this question, the more I think that this is sort of a metaphor for a writing style. That is, Wallace's style is more like Hitchcock or even Brackage--there's lots of camera movement. Story may or may not be important, but like Hitchcock, Wallace doesn't let his characters rule the plot. The zig-zagging between text and footnote echoes both the motion of a tennis ball and lens refraction, for example.
