Hi everyone. I am just curious, as a reader, what do you get out of reading a YA Dystopian book?

I am asking this because I am curious what different things we get from reading these kinds of books. After all each of us is different, and we all walk away with different things from reading a particular type of book.

Thanks for your time.

Abigail (abbeygrace) | 13 comments I love the futuristic worlds. Thinking about how the world might be in 50 years or 100.

Heather | 26 comments I love the ideas that people are able to come up with and write about. It opens my mind up to so many things. Even though it's not real I feel like I learn from it. I also love the fight for freedom from oppression.

Mike Essex | 3 comments I like how they often portray how our world would look if a specific issue of today was magnified. E.g. lots of Dystopia books tackle issues of poverty, overpopulation, wars and more that we hear about every day. That's what makes the best dystopia books feel human and keeps me reading.

Alison Morquecho (thebookishcamper) | 525 comments hmm that's a good question. for some reason usually dystopian ya books keep my ATTN, even though I am 26 with 3 kids :). I love reading about the futuristic worlds, and there is always great action and fighting in them. I love how as the reader we got to follow the main character through all these things. I lately have fallen in love with the quote, I've lived a thousand lives, because through these books we really have

Daniel (pickyreader1) | 203 comments Good question...

I would say the thrill. The gripping action, the heartpounding suspense... I like feeling that intensity. I also like imagining the new worlds, and how I would feel if I had to live in one of them. I also love to find characters that I can root for and support as they try to survive. And finally, beautiful romances that I can ship.

Sarah | 78 comments An *emphasis possible prediction of a negative future that may happen to society. This is why setting I question so many dystopias set on like distant planets or fantasy worlds.

Or more precisely yet harder to articulate, a negative prediction and warning for what may have to society in the present like Burning Chrome and Neuromancer.

Personally, I love the world-building. Seeing how characters interact in a different and challenging environment. I what them challenged and hope for a hot romance.

Shayna Varadeaux (ShaeAnn77) | 17 comments I read and love the imaginative quality of most Dystopia I have read it transports you to the setting and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Betty Cross (bettycross) | 70 comments I like the challenge it presents to the characters. I'm also a sucker for stories about oppressed people fighting for their freedom.

chucklesthescot I like to be entertained by a different world from mine especially a harsh environment.

Ali | 6 comments I like that they take you to another universe not different from ours. I love the futuristic worlds where many novels take place. I really like reading about alternate times where some things are possible and when the main characters face challenges that change their world.

Interesting opinions. I just wanted to bump up for the newer members to share their opinions about the topic. Thanks.

Christy Hewes | 2 comments Great question!

I agree with a lot of what has already been said. I love futuristic books and I find it interesting to imagine what our world will be like in 50 - 100 years....that future is like looking back at my grandparents' childhoods and thinking about how much we've changed since then.

I also like seeing young adults challenged and how their differing personalities create different outcomes for each of them.

Any book that transports me fully into another time and/or place is something I love....and most of these are great at doing just that.

Leahxx (heyitsleahxx) | 2 comments I get to fall in love with fictional guys that I will never meet. I also get heartache, frustration, and sometimes agony out of these books hahaha, but I keep reading anyway.

On a more serious note, they're a great thing to read, extremely interesting, and they provide a nice escape from reality and... high school...

Kristin Howell (kristin_howell) It's great to be taken to a world that is alien to us, but possible. It's just enough out of our reach that it feels like an entire new world, but there's always still the thought in the back of my mind that this could actually happen.

The challenges that they face also create lots of dynamic characters and almost ensure some type of growth through the book. No one wants a stagnant character.

Cate Beatty | 6 comments It's got to say something relative to us today. Check out Donor 23. for example, San Francisco review says: "Paced at breakneck speed, the storyline is a highly palatable science fiction suspense thriller. But the novel's real power comes in its thematic exploration of how inane social biases can mean the difference between prosperity and poverty, and in some cases life and death."
It just WON the 2014 Los Angeles Book Festival BEST YOUNG ADULT NOVEL. In addition, it was just accepted into the PARIS BOOK FESTIVAL. It received FIVE STARS from the San Francisco Book Review. Most importantly, it's average star rating on goodreads is 4+.

Delilah Canaan (deleelah) | 2 comments Hi. I was wondering if there is just a love story in a dystopian world, would that be nice?
