What are you reading? (Dec 2013)

First King happened before Sword of Shannara, but was published later.Check the "series" section on the GR listing on your book and it will lay it out. Probably more info that you'd want. LOL
That's what confused me. The entire series is listed twice in here. In two completely different orders. Lol.I've decided on publishing order. :)
I wasn't saying you shouldn't enjoy it dawn. I know it's well loved by many. I just don't see it as near LotR...that's me of course. I never got past Sword of Shannara. The rest always left me a little cold. To each. Enjoy.

Sword is pretty close to LotR. I even saw that Brooks himself wanted to start filming Elfstones because Sword was too similar to LotR.Speaking of which, I saw that MTV picked up the rights to do a Shannara series.
I love that. Heh...Yeah, I thought it was a weird fit too when I read it. They do have the backing of Brooks though. The director is the guy that did Iron Man, and the Smallville people are involved too.
I started two Flanagan books this morning: The Royal Ranger for my main, and The Invaders for my workout read.Hoping to finish RR this weekend, so I can start my annual HP reread on Monday!

I need to get back to that series.
I started the audio for Full Dark, No Stars the other day. I've gotten through the first story which was awesome. This middle one is scary.

Game started getting stupid, so I haven't been motivated to finish it off yet.The Ocean at the End of the Lane is very cool, but I've only been able to concentrate on a chapter or two a night.
A Tale of Two Cities is great but I'm going slowly (and with SparkNotes heh) when I have time to listen to audio.
Not a lot of progress overall.

I kind of lost my way in the Islam Quintet, so I've shelved it for another time and started Purple Hibiscus. I've only read about a quarter of it, but Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's prose is so lovely, it's hard to put down.

I technically started Dark Places last night, but I don't think I'm going to really read it yet. I need to get some knitting done, so this is a time for audio. So, I'm now listening to Sh*t My Dad Says.

A-BURN!
I'm headed to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert. The fellow who played Gimli in LOTR is doing a reading. I'm excited. When I get back I want to get back into Storm of Swords. Hopefully I can finish that before our group reads start. Eeep.

I'm reading Queen of Sorcery and hoping to write a review. I also started You Are Your Own Gym: The Bible Of Bodyweight Exercises For Men And Women and I'm going to read it through before I start so I'll be at this one for about...10-12 weeks?
Just started The Book just to make sure it gets read! I just recently read Steelheart (last week) but will probably need to do a re-read of LWW at some point!

I just started LWW to get a head start. I'm hell bent on doing Steelheart in January as well. I'm going to try for the other two as well because they sound so interesting but I'm not sure I have the capability to do so. I've wanted to read Swan Song for ages.

PS. I'm probably going to audio Swan Song because *cough* SOMEONE decided to nominate a doorstopper. O_O

This was my thought as well but I don't get my new credit until mid-January and that book is 30 hours long! I'm probably still going to audio it. Ha ha. It will just seep into February. Then all you guys will have to back in the thread and answer/rehash all on my questions/comments. *evil laughs*
I'm going to try to read all four - 1 per week, which is my personal goal for next year, anyway.I'm just not sure which one I'll choose to read first. Maybe I'll roll a die or something .. *shrug*

Yes. Someone...
I haven't decided if I'm going to read LW&W, yet. I read it before, as a kid, and I'm not sure I'm all that interested in reading it again, but I might since I don't think it's that long. But as it's the only one I'm likely to read of the four, and it is "my" genre, I suppose I ought.

I suppose you ought as well.
I won't be doing The Book because no one needs to listen to me whinge more about self-pubs ;) but I hope to do the other three! I'm a bit iffy about Sanderson because I think he's a good storyteller but his prose is painfully pedestrian; that might work okay for a children's book though.
I'm definitely doing Swan Song first though. I'm excited for that one, doorstopper or no. So I forgive the nameless individual who nominated such a hefty tome... ;)

I'm reading Queen of Sorcery. Trying to write a review for books I've read time and again seem to be more of a critical discussion than a review sometimes. I look at what I've written and think..."Did I like this??"

I quite enjoy reviews that read like a critical discussion though! I find my reviews of classics come out like that too, because a regular 'this is what it's about and here's why I (dis)liked it' format feels a bit redundant, yet I do think it's important that people keep talking about them.

After reading The Book, I feel a little guilty whining that Belgariad is not available on the Kindle, but...

Did you read The Book on your kindle, Emily? ---
In other news, I read a parody based on 50 Shades today (it was OK) and I'm working my way through Richard Matheson's collection The Box, which is pretty good so far. I love his short stories. :D
I did and it just felt wrong. :) I go through love/hate Kindle phases, but lately I've been doing a lot of nighttime reading and the Kindle is my compromise with my husband on that.

I scrapped reading Academ's Fury for now, I just wasn't feeling it at the moment. Started reading Among Others instead, so far it's fitting my mood much better. I'm trying to wait until January to start any group reads. I want to read them all, but I want to be able to discuss as I read. Looks like January is getting booked fast!

Is The First King... the 1st book of the series? I thought it was but I looked it up and I'm confused. What order do these go in? Chrono or publishing order?
