Is The First King... the 1st book of the series? I thought it was but I looked it up and I'm confused. What order do these go in? Chrono or publishing order?

message 152: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments First King happened before Sword of Shannara, but was published later.

Check the "series" section on the GR listing on your book and it will lay it out. Probably more info that you'd want. LOL

message 153: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments That's what confused me. The entire series is listed twice in here. In two completely different orders. Lol.

I've decided on publishing order. :)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I wasn't saying you shouldn't enjoy it dawn. I know it's well loved by many. I just don't see it as near LotR...that's me of course. I never got past Sword of Shannara. The rest always left me a little cold. To each. Enjoy.

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments And I wasn't addressing my comment to you, Mike. I was just expressing my opinion in general.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Cool.

message 157: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Sword is pretty close to LotR. I even saw that Brooks himself wanted to start filming Elfstones because Sword was too similar to LotR.

Speaking of which, I saw that MTV picked up the rights to do a Shannara series.

message 158: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments MTV? That sounds like a weird fit...

message 159: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Why? it's not like they do music anymore.

message 160: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Cause there are no werewolves or vampires?

*nod* I see.

message 162: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I love that. Heh...

Yeah, I thought it was a weird fit too when I read it. They do have the backing of Brooks though. The director is the guy that did Iron Man, and the Smallville people are involved too.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I started two Flanagan books this morning: The Royal Ranger for my main, and The Invaders for my workout read.

Hoping to finish RR this weekend, so I can start my annual HP reread on Monday!

message 164: by Felina (new)

Felina Yuck. MTV is going to mess that up.

I loved Shannara too, Dawn. I should do a reread.

I need to get back to that series.

message 166: by Felina (new)

Felina I started the audio for Full Dark, No Stars the other day. I've gotten through the first story which was awesome. This middle one is scary.

message 167: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Game started getting stupid, so I haven't been motivated to finish it off yet.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is very cool, but I've only been able to concentrate on a chapter or two a night.

A Tale of Two Cities is great but I'm going slowly (and with SparkNotes heh) when I have time to listen to audio.

Not a lot of progress overall.

You finishing a series is like me liking a boot - more a rarity when it happens than when it doesn't. ;)

message 169: by [deleted user] (new)

I kind of lost my way in the Islam Quintet, so I've shelved it for another time and started Purple Hibiscus. I've only read about a quarter of it, but Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's prose is so lovely, it's hard to put down.

message 170: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I technically started Dark Places last night, but I don't think I'm going to really read it yet. I need to get some knitting done, so this is a time for audio.

So, I'm now listening to Sh*t My Dad Says.

A-BURN!

message 172: by Felina (new)

Felina I'm headed to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert. The fellow who played Gimli in LOTR is doing a reading. I'm excited. When I get back I want to get back into Storm of Swords. Hopefully I can finish that before our group reads start. Eeep.

message 173: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm reading Queen of Sorcery and hoping to write a review.

I also started You Are Your Own Gym: The Bible Of Bodyweight Exercises For Men And Women and I'm going to read it through before I start so I'll be at this one for about...10-12 weeks?

message 174: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments Just started The Book just to make sure it gets read! I just recently read Steelheart (last week) but will probably need to do a re-read of LWW at some point!

message 175: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Woo! I haven't started The Book yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to it. :D

message 176: by Felina (new)

Felina I just started LWW to get a head start. I'm hell bent on doing Steelheart in January as well. I'm going to try for the other two as well because they sound so interesting but I'm not sure I have the capability to do so. I've wanted to read Swan Song for ages.

message 177: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I know. I'm going to try to do all of them, too. *holds up closed fist* Solidarity! ;)

message 178: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments I'm not personally much for horror, but I hope to do the other 3 each month!

message 179: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) PS. I'm probably going to audio Swan Song because *cough* SOMEONE decided to nominate a doorstopper.

O_O

This was my thought as well but I don't get my new credit until mid-January and that book is 30 hours long! I'm probably still going to audio it. Ha ha. It will just seep into February. Then all you guys will have to back in the thread and answer/rehash all on my questions/comments. *evil laughs*

message 181: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) O_o

Let's talk this through, now. No need to do something rash.

message 182: by Felina (new)

Felina I'm only ever rash!

message 183: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I'm going to try to read all four - 1 per week, which is my personal goal for next year, anyway.

I'm just not sure which one I'll choose to read first. Maybe I'll roll a die or something .. *shrug*

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I haven't decided if I'm going to read LW&W, yet. I read it before, as a kid, and I'm not sure I'm all that interested in reading it again, but I might since I don't think it's that long.

But as it's the only one I'm likely to read of the four, and it is "my" genre, I suppose I ought.

I suppose you ought as well.

message 188: by [deleted user] (new)

I won't be doing The Book because no one needs to listen to me whinge more about self-pubs ;) but I hope to do the other three! I'm a bit iffy about Sanderson because I think he's a good storyteller but his prose is painfully pedestrian; that might work okay for a children's book though.

I'm definitely doing Swan Song first though. I'm excited for that one, doorstopper or no. So I forgive the nameless individual who nominated such a hefty tome... ;)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm reading Queen of Sorcery. Trying to write a review for books I've read time and again seem to be more of a critical discussion than a review sometimes. I look at what I've written and think..."Did I like this??"

message 190: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You should just review like I do. Angry rants or Squee-filled raves. ;)

I quite enjoy reviews that read like a critical discussion though! I find my reviews of classics come out like that too, because a regular 'this is what it's about and here's why I (dis)liked it' format feels a bit redundant, yet I do think it's important that people keep talking about them.

message 192: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments After reading The Book, I feel a little guilty whining that Belgariad is not available on the Kindle, but...

message 193: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Did you read The Book on your kindle, Emily?

---

In other news, I read a parody based on 50 Shades today (it was OK) and I'm working my way through Richard Matheson's collection The Box, which is pretty good so far. I love his short stories. :D

message 194: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments I did and it just felt wrong. :) I go through love/hate Kindle phases, but lately I've been doing a lot of nighttime reading and the Kindle is my compromise with my husband on that.

message 195: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Aww, don't feel bad. I'll be reading it on my Nook. ;)

message 196: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I only read on my nook now. I read like 3 book-books last year.

message 197: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I scrapped reading Academ's Fury for now, I just wasn't feeling it at the moment. Started reading Among Others instead, so far it's fitting my mood much better.

I'm trying to wait until January to start any group reads. I want to read them all, but I want to be able to discuss as I read. Looks like January is getting booked fast!

LOL. I get what you're saying. I started reading The Book yesterday on my Nook and it felt wrong to me too.

After quite a few 2 star reads lately I decided to get a head start on the group reads. Hopefully, I'll remember enough to discuss...
