Nathan "N.R." Gaddis (nathannrgaddis) | 95 comments ...there is none. But I plan to begin somewhen toward the end of January // beginning of February 2014. I don't see any reason why you should wait for me. There ARE three (.3.) ::

Miss Ce Ce, My Darling (I believe we may all be Miss, My Darlings) requested some kind of schedule, or at a minimum, a series of signposts to mark our reading. I’ll produce three schedules ; all optional. Our arbitrarily chosen beginning date is the First of February, 2014.

I. A year of Miss MacIntosh, My Darling.
For those of you who would like to dwell and savor. At 1198 pages, we divide the novel into eleven parts ::
February :: pages 1 - 110.
March :: pages 110 - 220.
April :: pages 220 - 330.
May :: pages 330 - 440.
June :: pages 440 - 550.
July :: pages 550 - 660.
August :: pages 660 - 770.
September :: pages 770 - 880.
October :: pages 880 - 990.
November :: pages 990 - 1100.
December :: pages 1100 - 1198.

II. Five months for My Darling.
As with Women and Men, this pace may work best for most/many readers. 82 chapters : four chapters per week (Sunday to Sunday). I don’t know if the chapters are of roughly the same length, but the schedule is only for signpostage use -- feel free to shorten and lengthen as word=count dictates.

Feb 2-8 :: Chapters 1-4
Feb 9-14 :: Chapters 5-8
Feb 16-22 :: Chapters 9-12
Feb 23 - March 1 :: Chapters 13-16
Mar 2-8 :: Chapters 17-20
Mar 9-15 :: Chapters 21-24
Mar 16-22 :: Chapters 25-28
Mar 23-29 :: Chapters 29-32
Mar 30 - April 5 :: Chapters 33-36
Apr 6-12 :: Chapters 37-40
Apr 13-19 :: Chapters 41-44
Apr 20-26 :: Chapters 45-48
Apr 27 - May 3 :: Chapters 49-52
May 4-10 :: Chapters 53-56
May 11-17 :: Chapters 57-60
May 18-24 :: Chapters 61-64
May 25-31 :: Chapters 65-68
June 1-7 :: Chapters 69-72
Jun 8-14 :: Chapters 73-76
Jun 15-21 :: Chapters 77-80
Jun 22-28 :: Chapters 81-82

III. Eight weeks with Miss MacIntosh.
Roughly the pace I anticipate for myself. 82 chapters at 10 chapters per week.

Feb 2-8 :: Chapters 1-10
Feb 9-14 :: Chapters 11-20
Feb 16-22 :: Chapters 21-30
Feb 23 - March 1 :: Chapters 31-40
Mar 2-8 :: Chapters 41-50
Mar 9-15 :: Chapters 51-60
Mar 16-22 :: Chapters 61-70
Mar 23-29 :: Chapters 71-80
Mar 30 - April 5 :: Chapters 81-82

If you would like to commit to one of these three schedules, or find yourself roughly at a pace with one of these, please let the rest of us know so we might gain that advantage of mutually reinforcing social reading.

Paul (booksdofurnisharoom) | 1 comments That sounds about right; I'm reading The Recognitions at the moment and I was debating between this one, Women and Men, Laura Warholic and Life and Fate as the next "big" read; so I think Miss MacIntosh, My Darling wins that contest.

Ce Ce (cecebe) | 104 comments I am just completing the Year of Reading Proust (goodreads group).

I have had Miss MacIntosh, My Darling on my shelf since the late 80's. I pulled it down this week and set 2014 the year to finally read it.
(1979 Harvest/HBJ) Miss MacIntosh, My Darling by Marguerite Young

I will start at the beginning of February. After a year of tightly scheduled Proust reading, I will want to wander through with room for some reading freedom.

After Proust's 7 volumes, long beautiful sentences will be quite familiar!

There should be no problems in this department!

Happy to have you along for the bus ride.

Ce Ce (cecebe) | 104 comments Less than 24 hours and already I am wondering about the wisdom of not having any sort of framework or schedule for reading.

As we are beginning the last week and last pages of Proust's In Search of Lost Time, I realize it has been a marathon, a long distance run...with markers along the way that kept us engaged.

Even when life interfered (in a year, so much occurs)...and I fell behind, there was always the grid of the schedule, the calendar and a group goal to finish together.

I am not ready to repeat the intensity of that schedule. But if I think about 1200 pages and divide that by 11 months, starting at the beginning of February and ending at New Year's, it is just about 110 pages a month. That's manageable and leaves room for reading freedom. Any thoughts?

I'm hearin' ya. Maybe I could put together three alternative schedules. Eleven months reading would be way too long for me ; but would work for others. Maybe an 11 month ; a 5 month and a two month. Pick your system of road signs and/or read with abandon.

Thank you, Nathan. I will be using the year of reading MMMD as my framework so I can pace myself and hopefully relish.

I have no idea what schedule I'll be attempting (I mostly have no idea when I plan on starting), but both volumes have now been obtained, so I'm sure I'll be jumping in at some point.

Andrew Sare | 11 comments Hoping to reawaken a long sleeping discussion string. I'm wondering if anyone is looking to do a group read with the new Dalkey release. Maybe a new set of dates and an accompanying thread/threads for each schedule? I've had this ordered since April 5, 2022. Amazon is targeting shipping October 24 apparently.

message 12: by Coral (new)

Coral | 25 comments I am waiting to make sure that it will be released since my first pre-order was cancelled by Amazon. If so I was planning to start it in January 2024.

Ştefan Tiron (tironstefan) | 4 comments Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Same here waiting to hear news of the new Dalkey release in advance. Somehow I just couldn't give up on it. I've been ordering and re-ordering for the last couple of years. Last order was renewed for this December - keeping my hopes high for the Holliday season.

peg | 6 comments I am with you guys! Have had a used copy of volume 2 for years but never found vol 1 under $100. I did get a book of her poems and am reading them to get a feel for her writing. Also reading here and there in Vol 2 for same reason. Have a pre- order in to Amazon and sure hope it appears this time!

message 15: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Sare | 11 comments My Amazon pre-order said it was going to ship October 27th. I had last checked in mid-October. Just now I checked up to see if it had shipped and it says that they will nofity when its available. The Dalkey website now says Publication Date: 3/5/2024. Longest pre order ever, lol. Its turning into a bit of a white whale.

Put out an ebay alert, you can find 1979 Harcourt 2 vol paperback copies semi-often for less than $50. Who knows if the Dalkey repub will actually come out in March.

Sherri (Harte Reads) | 4 comments I have a copy from the library and will order the Dalkey if it is ever published.

Would love to do a group read. I just found Coral Russell's companion books on Amazon! This will be so helpful, Coral!

I have been waiting on the Dalkey reprint to re-read it, but of course, who knows when this will happen? It's been delayed three times now on Amazon. I still have my two-volume edition, but I'll stick to my resolution: hopefully, this coming March it will finally be released. I'd love to join a group read when it is.

Andrew Sare | 11 comments My copy of Miss MacIntosh, My Darling has shipped!!!

My Amazon order was placed April 5, 2022 for $35.61. Over two years later and after many delays (mind you it stayed on Dalkey’s “coming soon” list all this time) it is now on sale on Amazon for $45.95, not much more than what I purchased Bottom’s Dream for a few years earlier. It seems Amazon is honouring the original price I ordered it for, so there’s that.

Sherri (Harte Reads) | 4 comments I received my copy in the U.S.

peg | 6 comments I received my e-copy from Dalkey which I ordered months ago and forgotten about. Have the older 2 volume tomes but know it will be easier for me on a screen. Looking forward to a group read....Hi Sherri!

Hi Andrew, Hi everyone, the best news in years. I had give up on my order several times these years, nearly gave up completly. I guess it'll take some time till they start delivery to Germany (did my order trough Dussmann more than a year ago one last time).

message 26: by Coral (new)

Coral | 25 comments I walked into B&N and lo and behold I recognized MMMD from the front cover. Amazon cancelled my pre-order a while ago so I walked straight to it and bought it. Planning on reading it for the 5th time in 2025.

Finally the new Dalkey MMMD is here. After years and months of postponing and waiting, but what is that compared with 18 years or so Marguerite Young spent writing it. One of happiest moments this year. I am a first reader, so very low on the rung compared with others here that read it for 5 times. Cover is bad as expected but who cares. Cheers to everyone else who is now diving into it.

Coral | 25 comments That's awesome! So glad they're getting out there. Enjoy!

message 30: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Sare | 11 comments Coral. With your expertise I’m wondering if you might want to lead a new group read for the fall/late fall or have we left this discussion fallow for too long and lost our chance?

message 31: by Coral (new)

Coral | 25 comments It's never too late for a good read! :-) My plan was to do a read a long for 2025 starting Jan 1st. I was going to post on Substack (audio/video/text is allowed) and cross post to the FB group and I could here as well and Youtube. Comments could be made on any of the platforms. I cleared my calendar for it. How does that sound?

Sherri (Harte Reads) | 4 comments So happy to see this, Coral. I just subscribed to your Substack and the Facebook group. So looking forward to it!
