It is time to start accepting nominations for our January group read. For the time being, we'll just go with one title for the month pending feedback from the participants.

Also, because of issues getting people to volunteer to be moderators for the discussion, we are implementing a new rule to address that. Only nominate a book if you are willing to be the moderator for the group read. Any person that nominates a book will be expected to be the moderator. Those that nominate a book and fail to follow through as moderator will not be allowed to nominate future books nor have their books promoted through the Read 4 Review program (if they are an author).

Authors are welcome to nominate and moderate their own books.

We will take nominations through 18 December (or whenever 10 nominations is reached, whichever comes first) with voting running through the 26th (approximate).

I haven't read the first book in that series Allison Hewitt is trapped, but I see both of them are available at my public library in paperback format.:-D

It sounds like it might be the type of book that you can jump into without problem even if you haven't read the first. I'd read it!

Jason, your post cracked me up! That book looks like 29 pages of pain.

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Evan,
I hadn't heard of your book before, but I looked it up on amazon just now.
It looks like a good story.
I added it to my amazon wish list. :-D
My only concern is that it is a bit short (168 pages) for a whole month long BOTM.

Sorry Jason . :-\
Thank you though for the head's up.
I so dislike having high expectations of a book, based on the good reviews, only to pick it up and find it a dismal experience.

Netanella | 2108 comments I attended a commencement ceremony once, and the guest speaker said, something to the effect of the following:

"Keep your expectations low, and you'll never be disappointed."

So, first dates, first reads, that kind of thing... ;)

Armand Rosamilia (armandrosamilia) | 77 comments I would like to nominate my own book, which just came out. It is part of the Dying Days series but this one can be read alone, as it is a spin-off origin story for one of the characters. I will also be happy to moderate it.

Dave Callahan Hi I would like to nominate my ebook series Better Stay Dead.

Better Stay Dead John's Shout by Dave Callahan

I will release a five episode bundle that is kinda arc one and really standalone! I would be more than happy to moderate the group read :) Thank you very much.

Yammy | 177 comments How about the book I wanted to be the BOTM last month?

Day by Day Armagedon *HINT HINT BLOODY HINT*

Sadie Walker seems cool too though.

I keep lurking but lame books keep popping up since you started. Desolation is the exception and the one I made an exception for. Was going to jump on the one in Nov but read too slow. Walkers though? Srsly Jason? Come on, bro.
I suggest you make a new BOTM poll where we can pick the lamest books to laugh at.

message 14: by Tammy K. (last edited Dec 12, 2013 01:53PM) (new)

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Yammy,
I agree that Day by Day Armagedon by J.L. Bourne looks to be an interesting read for those who have it already.
Yet its current price of $9.73 for a 224 page kindle book is a bit steep and post holiday season spending that price alone might drive off potential BOTM participates.

message 15: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments Yeah. There's no way I'd pay nearly $10 for a zombie book for BOTM when I have such a backlog of books I already have.

I'm kind of ticked that I shelled out $2.99 for last month's Undead L.A. 1, which is now being sold for $0.99. And I didn't even care much for it.

message 16: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments Do you know why it's ten bucks and walkers is 99 cents?

Quality. if you want something good then you have to pay for it.

It's like food.

A McDouble tastes 'okay' and gets the job done for a buck... but if you want prime rib then you're going need to have Andrew Jackson in your pocket, you know?

And those free books well a lot of them are free for a reason, bro.

I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!!! Here's a little Teresa 'snark' for you guys: There's this place you can go, and its got, like, TONS of books in it. Wait, wait...it gets better! They are all FREE!!! Yeah, you heard me- FREE!!! Its called...wait for it...THE PUBLIC LIBRARY!!!! Chances are, if the book chosen for the BOTM was an 'expensive' book, its expensive because its GOOD. Stephen King's books are pricey, RIGHT??? Does that stop people from reading them? NO! I would all but guarantee that any library would haveDay by Day Armageddon. If they don't, there's this thing called Inter-Library Loan, in which your friendly neighborhood librarian requests the book from a different library that DOES have it. If I, in rural West Virginia, can get my hands on some of the most obscure books through my library, I know damn well everyone else can, too. And ILL doesn't take long at all, and they allow you to borrow the book for a longer time. That's my two cents, not that anyone probably cares, and I'll sneak back into the 'lurker' shadows, where I've been ostracized to until there may come a time where I feel *ahem* comfortable discussing a book with this group.

message 18: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments Sorry, but I can't imagine any work of fiction of normal length to be worth $10. I've never paid that much for a work of fiction in my life. Not anywhere near that.

I used to read so much, I always bought my books at the half-price book stores, leaving with bags full at a time.

At this point, $4.99 would be the most I'd be willing to pay for an eBook. And then, just to get an eBook copy of an already favorite book, or by my favorite authors. Where I KNOW the quality.

Price is no guarantee. I've had prime rib that was overcooked and gristly. A McDouble, with a nice side of grilled onions, would have been preferable.

message 19: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) WAIT!!! Before I get attacked from all directions, I am, BY NO MEANS, saying that indie authors can't be great! They often are, but are more often not. That's all...I'm not trying to say that every book read should be a NY Times bestseller. But one here and there WOULD be nice. NOW, I will take my curtain call and go back to lurking. Sorry for messing up the thread...

message 20: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments Teresa wrote: "Stephen King's books are pricey, RIGHT??? Does that stop people from reading them? NO!"

He's one of my favorite authors, but I wouldn't pay over $4.99 for an eBook by him. Even that would be a stretch. The cover and blurb would have to be very enticing.

WHAT?!?! You've never paid over $10 for a book?!?! Oh my god; I can't wrap my mind around that! But then again, books ARE my weakness, my one treat to myself. Still, I don't see the problem with getting a book from the library. How does price come in to play with the library? My library offers e-books as well. AND, if they don't have a book, and CAN'T get it ILL, they will, 99% of the time, order it especially for you! I've done it TONS of times. I certainly wasn't going to pay $24.95 for George Saunders books Tenth of December, so I had my library get it. Just remember, the library system is like everything else...if you don't use it, you lose it! Use the library!!!

And, you ARE right, Randy, price ISN'T a guarantee, but its a pretty good reflection of what you are getting. And, if I were you, I'd have sent that prime rib back to the kitchen! ;-)

And I KNOW animosity will be creeping in directed towards me, so this will be my last comment. I don't have the energy nor time to squabble over book prices when chances are overwhelming that I won't be taking part in January's BOTM read anyway.

Moderator's Note: We will post the poll either 18 Dec or when 10 books have been nominated. I see 7 books nominated currently.

Also, let's try and keep this chat focused just on nominating the titles for next month. The rest of the chatter can be moved to a separate thread please. This way I don't miss any books that are nominated when I make the poll. Thanks.

I'd like to nominate Black Redneck vs. Space Zombies. It was a R4R, so I hope some of you have been able to read it. It was a really fun book, and it flows so well that it's a quick read as well.

Joanna Turner (joannaprototype) Well, I may as well give it a go, so here is my book.

The world has gone to hell. The dead are not dying, and humans have just taken a quick drop down the food chain. Everyday life has turned into a fight for survival as resources diminish. This is the world Ury has found herself in, but she'll be damned if she will go out like the rest. Fighting her way through unspeakable horrors and learning to survive, Ury is stuck on "A Bloody Road to Nowhere" and she is taking it all the way to the end.

Ride with Ury and friends through all the horrors of the zombie apocalypse. Check out "A Bloody Road to Nowhere and Tales from the Apocalypse" on amazon.

Tammy, sorry I didn't reply earlier. Yes, the book is short, but it packs a lot into what few pages it has. Thanks for adding it to your to-read list. The eBook will be free on Amazon on Christmas and Boxing Day, so go grab a freebie and enjoy it even if it doesn't get voted for the BOTM.

message 32: by Tammy K. (new)

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Thank you Evan and David for your generous Christmas presents.

I have voted for a title on January's BOTM. It doesn't look good for the title that I voted for, but there is still time :-)

Jim,
Many of the titles nominated are novellas less than 200 pages. I am a bit concerned that the lack of page count will lead to a very short BOTM.
We completed Dec BOTM in half the time allotted and it was over 300 pages.
What are your thoughts regarding this?

message 33: by Yammy (new)

Yammy | 177 comments I am a bit concerned that the current one in the #1 slot sucks.

message 34: by Randy (last edited Dec 20, 2013 03:18PM) (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments I'm assuming the 8 people that voted for Walkers have already read the first two episodes?

The second choice, with only 30 pages in it, should probably be a "book of the hour" read. :)

message 35: by Jim (new)

Jim | 219 comments Mod
Mod Note: I attempt to not dictate the nominations or selections for BOTM but leave that up to the group members. All I can suggest is that if people are concerned about a poor book being chosen, maybe they can either 1) reconsider their vote and change their vote to another title that has a chance of winning in hopes of getting a better group read title and/or 2) recruiting other zombies group members to be involved in the BOTM and vote/read.

I believe the nomination for Walkers was intended to be the entire series (thus far) or the first in the series rather than the third.

message 36: by C.E. (new)

C.E. Martin (cemartin2) | 13 comments A comment on page count... You can't always count on it to be accurate. I've self-pubbed several books that Kindle says are under 200 pages, then when I format them for createspace print editions, 5x8, they come out closer to 300 pages.

message 37: by Dave (new)

Dave Callahan Well concerning my nomination, I've already said that it's gonna be a 200 page read at least! There are already 4 episodes and a big finale episode (written already) will be launched this week.

If by any chance my book is selected, it will be at least 200 pages!

message 38: by Tammy K. (last edited Dec 20, 2013 04:40PM) (new)

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Jim wrote: "...I believe the nomination for Walkers was intended to be the entire series (thus far) or the first in the series rather than the third. ..."

I seen that it was book which contained episodes 1-3 that you had listed on the polls.

WALKERS: from the universe of THE WALKING DEAD Series (Zombie Apocalyptic Fiction) - Episodes 1-3 Combined (WALKERS Compilation)
http://www.amazon.com/WALKERS-univers...
which will bring up the page count to 145

I wasn't trying to suggest that the BOTM would be a "bad" book. If a title that I do not wish to read is selected, I simply will not participate.
Goodness knows that what I consider a Good book is not necessarily what others will.
Aint that right Randy, and Netanella :-D

I was concerned with the length of the books and the possibility of running a couple BOTM together.

Like if the top books page count is less than 300 pages we run two BOTM's, or something like that.

Also, I like the idea of a public thread for discussion of BOTM selection.
I recognize that you had wished to keep this thread only for the nomination process. Understandable.
Yet as you also stated in your last comment, group members are the ones who will be voting and
either 1) reconsider their vote and change their vote to another title that has a chance of winning in hopes of getting a better group read title
and/or
2) recruiting other zombies group members to be involved in the BOTM and vote/read.

So maybe there needs to be a thread where people can openly do this Inside the group?

My vote has been made, but I as I said at this stage in the game, its not likely to become the BOTM.
I would be willing to change my vote to a title that is more agreeable for the whole group, provided that I get the book that I am interested in supported in a later BOTM ...
Maybe others might be willing to talk OPENLY about such deals?
