ABANDONED. Man travels in magical kingdom where bears talk but are forgetful

This has been bugging me forever! I read this book within 5 years from now, I dont know when it was written
I remember almost nothing about the book other than the main character is a man and is travelling in some sort of magic kingdom. There is a part in it where he meets with this group of bears who live in the forest but they can all talk. For some reason, once the bears reach adulthood, they become forgetful and essentially have no memory, so it falls on the cubs to take care of them. One cub i. Particular helps out the lead character,and I feel like some sort of terrible fate befalls the bears, like the all die, or go to war or something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
