Holly | 5 comments Hi, I read a book not too long ago that I can't remember the name of. I remember the names being very middle-eastern sounding, something like Tashkor. It is about a peasant who is taken from her hovel where she lives with her prostitute mother, by her father the (equivalent of) King. The mother got pregnant with the King, who wasn't able to marry her because of her standing. The King has another son with his wife that he doesn't love, and because the girl doesn't know she's his daughter, the two siblings fall in love.

There are parts where the girl has powers to be able to create flame, and there is a lot of mention of something called 'dancers' who are supposed to save the world. The world recreates itself over and over whenever the dancers fail.

I hope this is enough information for someone to know what I'm talking about! It's in English and I found it in Canada, but it was published in the US. Has words that seem made up but with a bent towards middle-eastern setting.

Thanks in advance!

How long ago was "not too long ago"? 6 months, 3 months, 3 years?

Where did you find the book--library, book store, grocers, thrift store? How did you find it? Someone recommended it, the cover/back blurb caught your eye, you had to read it for some reason (school, book club)?

Holly | 5 comments I found it at a flea market, read it about three months ago. It caught my eye because I was looking for something to read that might help me with a book that I'm writing about people with magical powers.

I remember that the any prisoners of war in the book were called 5 scores because they were cut once for each year that they had worked until they had paid off their debt. The main character was a servant at the castle, not knowing about her father's indiscretions until his wife finds out and has her beaten and banished. I'm sorry, I'm trying to remember more but the details seem to be slipping away.

Holly | 5 comments I found it! It came to me after I remembered that my wife had picked it up at Chapters when she worked there a few years ago. It didn't have a cover because they tear it off when it isn't selling and she got it from the recycling bin. The name of the book is On Fire's Wings by Christie Golden. The main character is Kevla Bai-sha. Thanks for your help!
