thank you Char (using mobile app so I can't see your name) it's been over a month since he passed. I will always remember the book pet semetary as it was the book I finished 10 minutes before I was told the terrible news. I totally understood how the doctor felt when he's son passed and wishing he was back, if I had knowledge that could bring someone back from the dead I don't know if I could stop my self going to the Indian burial ground.

It's something that I lot of us might not be able to resist doing. I lost my dad over 10 years ago now, but I still do miss him every day...especially around this time of year. So I'm sending you my best for this tough time.
Completed my 60 in October. This was a fantastic reading year, with my favorite author, Stephen King; up against his son, Joe Hill. Read a lot of Agatha Christie; but not as much horror as I usually read. I am hoping to remedy that situation very soon. Robert McCammon announced re-release of The Five. I hope i can snag a copy in the bookstore. someone showed copies at B&N, as pretty as you please.
House of Leaves was the best book read this year. I don't even know if it is horror. It creeped me out, set me on edge, and left me looking over my shoulder. One of the best books i have ever read...
thank you Kate I miss him terribly and I feel bad cos I have dissociated myself from the trauma of losing him, which has left me cold to my emotions and my families grief. I look like a ass but literature is helping me a great deal.
Omg Joe hill is kings son? goes to show that I am ignorant when it comes to who's who.
I think unconsciously my goals have been to read as many different authors as I can and to break away from my snob like tastes.
Everyone copes with grief in different ways, Sonny. I can't imagine how you feel but I hope you're taking care of yourself.
I am at 145 of a goal of 100, so I think I sandbagged my number a little bit. I should have set it a wee higher. There were a few shorter works on there so maybe the number looks inflated. All in all it has been a good reading year!
Thanks, Kate! I actually listened to a few audiobooks this year too, so those are included in that number as well.
I had a look at your list Jon, some amazing reads on there. Quite a few I'll be putting on my 2014 'must read' list. Quality not quantity. :D
The ones that I own, in no particular order:Dead Sea - Tim Curran
Summer of Night - Dan Simmons
Murder as a Fine Art - David Morrell
Every Dead Thing - John Connolly
The Children's Hour - Douglas Clegg
That Which Should Not Be - Brett Talley
Dead Sea! Summer of Night! Every Dead Thing! Not a bad one in that bunch, really. Though I haven't yet the David Morrell one, but he is consistently good. I haven't yet read Brett Talley's book either, but I do plan to.
I have got a lot of great rec's from Jon, Kate! From Charlene, too! I am hoping to get to a buddy read of Dead Sea with Adam Light - so maybe we can get a couple of us together for a read, Kate :)
I need to get to Summer of Night as well.

Yep, Jon and Charlene have amazing taste in books. There were so many good books on Jons list it was difficult to narrow it down to 'must reads'.

I've liked everything of his I've read so far so my expectations are high.
I'm doing ok I think. I only started reading properly this year , I set mine to 52 also but changed it lower as in march I lost a baby. I think I'm doing ok though with 40 something books now:)
thank you Larry, misty that really sucks sorry for your loss. I can't comprehend how upset you was, some people are so ignorant. they believe that there is only one way to grieve because that's what they have been told to believe by soap operas and media in general. even in this day and age people are ignorant to mental health.I know some people that have acted like that to me in public, also by people sending malicious anonymous messages to my blog telling me how to grieve and calling me sick.
people are arseholes.

That's the way I count my short stories. If they are published individually, they count as a book. If they are part of a collection, I'll read the collection. I adjust my goal accordingly.
