Winter 13/14 20.8 - Disastrous Reading: Kate S's task

I am going to accept this. It sounds like she uses survivors' stories from several disasters which would be in the vein of this task.

Thank you.

From what I can see, it looks fine, Karen. It does appear to have a lot of pictures in it, so as your reading it, just make sure it is more text than illustrations. Look forward to your thoughts.

Thanks Kate - it's ok as far as text to pictures and it includes a variety of interesting disasters. I also found another in my high school collection that has bingo in the title (those non-fiction subtitles help!)
Blizzard of Glass: The Halifax Explosion of 1917 by Sally M. Walker, Lexile 1100
Nice Task!

The Beleaguered City: The Vicksburg Campaign, December 1862-July 1863
Columbine

Sorry it took me so long. I saw this message, then forgot to respond.
I think the Holocaust, the American Civil War and the French Revolution are disastrous, but not necessarily disasters in the same way as an earthquake. There are certainly examples of disasters in each of these events, but a general overview of, for example, the American Civil War does not fit the bill.
I would accept any of your examples as examples of disaster books. Trail of Tears is certainly the most questionable as it seems to deal with far more than the disaster which befell them, but I think the 100 year span is probably fraught with a cycle of bad things happening followed by survivor stories. Hope you enjoy one or more of them.
If you have other titles you want me to look at, let me know. I will try to answer more promptly. :)

Too Big to Fail: The Inside Story of How Wall Street and Washington Fought to Save the Financial System from Crisis — and Themselves by Andrew Ross Sorkin
It's more of a financial disaster, but a distaster all the same?

I'm sorry, Marie, I don't think this fits. But it does qualify for 10.6 (this is his most recent book), and is a fairly interesting read.

Glad you are enjoying it, Bea!

And BINGO;)

Yes, I will accept a financial crisis.

Good idea, thanks!

Sorry, this does look like an interesting read and covers some terrible events, but does not look like a disaster book.

Read a non-fiction book about a disaster such as The Hurricane of 1900, the Triangle factory fire, the sinking of the Titanic, the Great Influenza of 1918, The Great Depression, or the Bhopal Industrial Accident. Ideas can be found on this list.
