I picked up Nesbo's "Snowman" totally randomly off the shelf of B & N--to read while I sipped a latte. Mistake! Or rather, I then had to buy it since I got to p. 50 and was almost late for an appt! I've been hearing about his books for a few years, so I'm late to the party.

I'm reading both of these right now! I feel the same way about both books, Denise.

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments The newest Nesbo book Police A Harry Hole Novel by Jo Nesbø is the best one of his I have ever read!

message 105: by Laura (new)

Laura Agnella (lagnella) Hi all, I'm new to this group. I'm almost at my 52 books in 52 weeks goal and for December I'm reading the following books:

1. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
2. Mariana by Susanna Kearsley
3. The Night Circus by
4. Graveminder by Melissa Marr

I am an adult over 40 but I do like some YA as long as it isn't too sappy and has a quality story. I'm reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane right now and it is quite good.

Happy reading!
Laura

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Welcome Laura! The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman was one of my favorites this year.

Denise (deniseg53) | 221 comments Now that I've stopped crying, I want to thank everyone for recommending WONDER. OMG. What a wonderful book. I'll be buying this for my granddaughters for Christmas.

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Yay Denise is converted! (Although I don't think you were the person that said they wouldn't read YA anymore some where up thread, were you?)

message 109: by Denise (new)

Denise (deniseg53) | 221 comments Welcome Laura. I finally caved and started reading some YA over the past year. I'm so glad I did. I love Rainbow Rowell!

message 110: by Elizabeth☮ (new)

Elizabeth☮ Welcome to the group Laura. You'll find plenty of great recommendations here.

message 111: by Denise (new)

Denise (deniseg53) | 221 comments I don't think that was me, Victoria. Until approximately 12 months ago, the only YA I read was The Book Thief and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas...and that's after spending 13 years as a book seller! I didn't know what I was missing. I still wouldn't read their romance or sci-fi/fantasy, but I don't read adult books in those genres either.

Kate | 270 comments Forgot to post here after I gave Wonder 5 stars. Cried so hard and glad no one was home. I am finishingLife After Life and then onto The Goldfinch. Can't wait!!

message 115: by Victoria (last edited Dec 13, 2013 06:09PM) (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments I changed my Wonder rating from 4 to 5 stars yesterday! So much talking about it reminded me of how much I really really liked it. I don't know why I didn't give it 5 to begin with.

Kate, you are reading good book after good book! I'm about 1/3 or more through The Goldfinch, started yesterday.

message 116: by Denise (new)

Denise (deniseg53) | 221 comments I am so grateful to this group for the great book suggestions. I read tons of reviews, but there is nothing like a recommendation from people you respect. ♡

message 117: by Elizabeth☮ (new)

message 119: by Gerald (new)

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Just finished Hatching Twitter A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship, and Betrayal by Nick Bilton . If you use Twitter you will get a better idea of the trail of betrayal and back stabbing used to create the web site. I loved it. Probably will download Time and Again (Time, #1) by Jack Finney a book I have wanted to read for years.

message 120: by Chanda2426 (new)

Chanda2426 | 136 comments Just finished Wintergirls. An OK read with an absurd ending. Gonna start ARC of Wiley Cash's This Dark Road to Mercy this afternoon. Happy reading all!

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Denise wrote: "Is Five Days at Memorial pretty good?"

I liked it (not sure I would classify it as "enjoy" given the subject matter. After reading, I'm still not sure what I think about the whole situation regarding right/wrong. Well researched though, definitely, and I found the author very dispassionate and objective in her reporting of what happened.

I've really just started it, Denise, but so far it is pretty good. I'm just in the laying the groundwork part. The narrator seems to be good.

message 125: by Karen (new)

message 126: by Denise (new)

Denise (deniseg53) | 221 comments Sometimes when I can't make up my mind to read, I choose nonfiction. I started Five Days at Memorial. It's so good! Hope you like it, too, Linda.

message 127: by Victoria (last edited Dec 15, 2013 01:00PM) (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments I finished The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt . It was pretty wonderful. I'm not sure if I think 5 stars or 4, wish GR had a .5 option! The descriptions were wonderful - much of the time I felt like I was watching a movie. The characters were great, again, I always felt like I could vividly see them in my mind. Yet, something keeps me from declaring it a 5 star read for me. Entirely worthwhile, though, all 770ish pages.

message 128: by Sue (new)

Sue | 415 comments I just finished We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, which I hadn't planned on reading (got it as a gift), but love-love-loved, and am getting ready to dive into my Secret Elf book - The Last Chinese Chef by Nicole Mones. It's a happy, snowy Sunday!

message 129: by Pam (new)

Pam | 81 comments Can you read The Goldfinch without reading Tartt's other two novels, or is it a stand-alone?

message 133: by Gail (new)

Gail | 74 comments I have recently read The Age of Miracles, Pavilion of Women, and Serena. I see that Zelda is available at my library , so I have just downloaded it, even though I have Goldfinch which I am hoarding.
I hope you all have many happy hours of reading over the holidays.

Debbie (Vote Blue) | 261 comments I am finishing Ex-Heroes-- it accidentally ended up on my finished list and integrity requires me to make it right. And I am now loving it! Funny how books have to be at the right time!

It was me that said that. I have the book now and intended to read it this weekend, but work got in the way.

message 136: by Kathy (new)

Kathy For several months I've whittled away at the unread volumes in my personal Teetering Stack. But the siren song of the library proved too much for me to resist: now I have two Teetering Stacks, one made up of borrowed books. Am currently finishing The Age of the Customer (received from author Jim Blasingame at a Chamber of Commerce event), Booth Tarkington's 1913 The Flirt, and that same old collection of Walter Kerr's drama criticism. Once I finish those it's on to the TS2 and its tempting titles Truth in Advertising, Eudora Welty: A Biography, The Gershwins and Me: A Personal History in Twelve Songs, Octopus!: The Most Mysterious Creature in the Sea, The Teleportation Accident, and Deaf Sentence.

The Age of the Customer Prepare for the Moment of Relevance by Jim Blasingame The Flirt by Booth Tarkington Thirty Plays Hath November Pain and Pleasure in the Contemporary Theater by Walter Kerr Truth in Advertising by John Kenney Eudora Welty A Biography by Suzanne Marrs The Gershwins and Me A Personal History in Twelve Songs by Michael Feinstein Octopus! I wasn't so far into The Goldfinch and it is so hectic for me right now that I was able to put it down. That said, The Last Summer of the Camperdowns is okay, I hope it picks up a little!

I started Safe from the Sea by Peter Geye Safe from the Seajust before I went into the hospital. It seems it is going to be a great read for this gal raised on a Great Lake.

I was listening to Five Days at Memorial Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by Sheri Fink Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital and had less than 2 hours to go, but didn't get to listen yesterday. It was due yesterday through the Ohio e-book project. I went to listen today and it's gone! I did find the e-book, the audio has 2 people before me, so I guess I'll finish it that way.

I'm down one book right now because I figured I won't be listening / traveling in the car for a few weeks.

message 144: by Kate (new)

Denise (deniseg53) | 221 comments I finally finished Five Days at Memorial. It was really interesting but I got a bit bored and rushed through the end. I ended up googling some of the main doctors andnueses to see what they looked like.

I ead an arc of We Were the Liars. Excellemt. Now I'm reading Stegner and enjoying his writing very much.

Gail | 74 comments I see that the Kindle copy of The Orchardist is on sale for $1.99 today. Several reviews found this book slow, but I enjoyed it. I buy my bff 10 books for Christmas every year and this was one of them.
