Barathol, eager to set up as a Blacksmith runs into the brick wall of bureaucracy. The blacksmith’s guild wants credentials and sponsorship from a Darujistan guild member. He could always start fresh as an apprentice but as it is obvious to the clerk that he is in fact a blacksmith as he claims to be he is overqualified to be an apprentice. Barathol’s solution...

‘...I’ll open up a smithy anyway. Independent.’
‘Are you mad? They’ll burn you out. Smash up your equipment. Descend on you in a mob and beat you to death. And that’s just on opening day.’
Barathol smiled.

On a side note, it appears Darujistan has Ice-cream – they have apparently learned how to use the underground gas a refrigerant

Barathol stepped outside and saw Mallet waiting across the street, eating some kind of flavoured ice in a broad-leaf cone...
... ‘They tasted better when I was a young brat – although they were more expensive since a witch was needed to make the ice in the first place. Here, of course, it’s to do with some of the gases in the caverns below.’

Scorch and Leff, having cleared their list with Kruppe’s help take up jobs as castle guards – Torvald Nom joins them.

I like the subtle hint Erikson drops in that Kruppe was responsible for making sure the indebted on the list escape

Twelve names on the list. One happily struck off. Eleven others found and then escaped like the slippery eels they no doubt were...

Some may remember that Kruppe was “The Eel” in Gotm and described by those who knew him as a “slippery eel.”

Anyway, the irony of professional thieves guarding a rich castle against thieves seems lost on on Scorch and Leff

‘Scorch, it may be lots of things, but “demanding” isn’t one of them. We’re there to keep thieves out. And since all three of us have been thieves ourselves at one time or another, we should be pretty damned good at it. We’d better be, or we’ll get fired.’

Harllo’s disappearance is reported to Stormy and Murillio and it’s panic stations. Harlo is working in one of Gorlas’ mines – being small he is used to get into hard to reach places deep in the cracks to look for promising veins. On one of his forays he finds a T’lan Imass with broken legs who has been just laying about since Raest was the Tyrant

‘I am Dev’ad Anan Tol, of the Irynthal Clan of the Imass, who once lived on the shores of the Jhagra Til until the Tyrant Raest came to enslave us. Sent us down into the rock, where we all died. Yet see, I did not die. Alone of all my kin, I did not die.’

Dev’ad lived long enough for the ritual of Tellan to catch up with him. So he’s been sitting about for some 300000 years.

Harllo promises to visit and bring back a splint for the Imass’ broken legs.

Gorlas prostitutes his wife out to his political allies.

A little recap – Challice was the girl Crokus had a crush on in Gotm – Gorlas was courting her at the time. Shardan Lim and Harnut Orr are the sons of the men who conspired with Lady Simtal to wipe the memory of Coll from the town records leaving him destitute – Rallick Nom killed both Orr and Lim and indirectly Lady Simtal to revenge Coll and see him restored to his property and position.

Lori I can't remember but I'm rooting for Murillo and Stonny to get together. (David - it's Stonny! Stormy is with Gruntle, her)

And I find myself extremely concerned about Harllo.

Stormy is with Gesler.

Lori Hahaha yep I got it wrong too. Gruntle/Gesler and Stonny/Stormy.

Ha Ha! I blame auto-correct.

Silvio Curtis | 403 comments Rob and any other first-timers still with us, are we assuming the Mistress is Spite? Who or what would the castellan be?

Sumant On a side note, it appears Darujistan has Ice-cream – they have apparently learned how to use the underground gas a refrigerant

I imagined a ice popsicle.

I like the subtle hint Erikson drops in that Kruppe was responsible for making sure the indebted on the list escape

I think it was hinted to us in previous chapters too that Kruppe helped them escape.

Rob and any other first-timers still with us

i am a first timer and my reading is going properly with schedule :D.

are we assuming the Mistress is Spite

But i think somebody reminisced in this chapter that she was still on the ship and waiting for something to happen.

Hm, that's a problem. Another mystery, then!

@Sumant, yes that is right, good pick up. Also, she is waiting for the right moment to leave the ship based on the fact she feels the presence of another in the city. This was mentioned when the ship first docks and has her concerned. Lady Spite being concerned about someone can't be good.

I thought the mistress was the former head of the assassins guild, that left the Azath house.

And I thought the ice cream was flavored shaved ice. I'm glad that Baruthol and crew ran into the bridgeburners. I like them all together. He and Mallet seem like they could do some real damage together.I love Kruppe period, and am not surprised that he has his hand in all things Darujhistan. He makes me feel that he is going to pull something out of his sleeve, concerning rescuing Harlo. And I really do hope that Murrillio can pierce that armor of Stonny's. I don't like the turn her character has taken.

Unfortunately I seem to always be behind on my Malazan reading these days. I honestly don't have an idea who the Mistress is. Spite is a good guess. Vorcan's not a bad one either.

I really love Darujistan a lot more than the other ones. I was cracking up the whole time.

I missed that little hint, but I had thought that all along. I guess I forgot to bring it up.

I assume he was probably working both ends. Taking a cut a from their finders fees, and getting paid by the people on the list for the heads up so they could get away.

David Sven wrote: "A little recap – Challice was the girl Crokus had a crush on in Gotm"

I was wondering if that was the case when they mentioned the party. I had forgotten her name but was too lazy to go look it up. David Sven to the rescue once again!

Silvio Curtis | 403 comments Ah, sadly do misguided readers misvalue humble Kruppe! He has all hands at all ends indeed, and do the pecuniary rewards or the moral have more succulency when he pulls them from his underestimated sleeves? Precisely!

Wow. Well there you go. We were wondering who could take up the mantel of Kruppe in our litrle reading group. Looks to me like that is sorted.
