Félix (habitseven) Barracuda is much, much better, Jim. Thank you. Especially if I picture the Heart videos that I remember from '80s MTV.

I'm listening to the sound of my hard drive whirr, as I begin yet another major revision/rewrite of my thesis.

I'm beginning to understand the frustration my students have with academic writing.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Listening to Asturias by Juan Quesada. Spectacular flamenco guitar skills.

message 208: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (luvrdn) | 501 comments I am listening to a powwow on youtube, the drums and calls, are soothing

message 209: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Sal, my frustration with academic writing stopped me from considering going on for the PhD in sociology... And now I'm going to law school? Um, oops.

I'm listening to the best thing to come out of Mississippi ever (well, after the blues and me, that is), MS Public Broadcasting, online.

Mindy, I'm glad you're out there.

After a morning of revising and trashing what I'd spent a month composing, now I'm studying for the Praxis: Language and Literature Content Examinations, and seriously freaking out.

Perhaps I should have stayed with being a waitress or hairdresser forever? What am I doing in grad school?

message 211: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments This is probably not what you're talking about, but I cannot tell you the... cognitive dissonance I've experienced over the past few years about who I am as an educated person and who I was as a working-class person. And was I maybe happier before the education? Particularly before the graduate education? And since my motivations for getting an education were mostly about my own enlightenment, not about becoming a "profesional," all the hoop-jumping of grad school really grated on me... When I took my Master's comps, I DID freak out. I sat in the graduate office that morning BAWLING. I could not get it together to go into the testing room. My advisor about shit! She ended up plying me with M&Ms and a box of Kleenex, and I got through it, but DAMN that was oe of the most miserable experiences of my life. In fact, when I was done with the theory portion on the first day, I knew I had failed. I was certain! When we got our results, turned out I passed w/departmental honors and that made me almost as sick, b/c as my advisor said, "Mindy, your self-perception is seriously warped."

Um, I don't know where I was going with that. I am glad I got (and am getting) all the education now, but there is lots not to like about academia, and it was definitely a struggle... I still have days when I miss being a bartender.

message 212: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Wow, I just realized how NOT about music that post was. Sorry folks!

I listened to Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here all weeekend. How's that?

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Oh, man. You don't know how much I needed to hear that. I'm sitting here full of guilt for the previous six weeks of summer in which I didn't study for this exam, thinking I know it all already. What if I blow and fail and am laughed out of school?

My self-perception is much like yours was, I'd like to imagine, warped. Unless I'm spot on and I am a total idiot.

And to validate my post as music-related:I've been listening to Paul Oakenfold's Creamfields Disc 1 all afternoon. I like techo when I write/study.

message 214: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I recognize the name Paul Oakenfold from a song on The Streets album Original Pirate Material, but I don't know any of his music.

And your perception is totally warped. You will ROCK that exam!

Sally, our students DREAD the Praxis. Everyone passes sooner or later, though. I hate the fact the tests cost so much. Plus...it's not an exam for which you can easily study.

Usako (bbmeltdown) *giggles and falls out of her chair*

I adore music of all varities. And some bring back fond memories so I'll listen to the song over and over again. Spin Doctors reminds me of Europe, Snow's Informer, TMNT, and Starter Jackets (those were trends back there).

And what is wrong with Coldplay?! Nice rythmn.

Now I must Turn to Real Life by Shiny Toy Guns!

The bunny...the bunny...whoa i ate the bunny...i didn't eat my soup or the bread, just the bunny. the bunny, the bunny, now I feel sick from the bunny.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Is Jackie playing "The Bitch is Back" loud in her office as an indicator to her colleagues that she's returned from her vacation?

message 233: by [deleted user] (new)

OUCH

message 234: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Heh. Well, she's the one playing it! Maybe it's a warning not to mess with her.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Randomanthony wrote: "Heh. Well, she's the one playing it! Maybe it's a warning not to mess with her."

That's right! Better not mess with me, or you won't get any of the chocolate-covered macadamia nuts I brought back for the office.

I am completely capable of eating them all myself, if I have to!

message 237: by Usako (last edited Jul 24, 2009 06:59AM) (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) No boss in the office. Tunes cranked to maximum enjoyment. The devil iPod singeth...

1. She Blinded Me with Science - Thomas Dolby
2. The Fall - Electric Light Orchestra (Xanadu!!!)
3. Tiny Little Fractures - Snow Patrol
4. I'll Try (Reprise) - Jonatha Brooke (Return to Neverland)
I adore this song, most probably because I was the one clapping for Tinkerbell. "All the world is made of faith and trust and pixie dust. So I'll try cause I finally believe. I'll try cause I can see what you see. I'll try. I'll try...to fly."
5. Where Does the Good Go - Tegan & Sara (Grey's Anatomy)

RA - is that devilish enough for ya?

message 238: by Michelle (new)

message 244: by Knarik (new)

Knarik I have at last found and downloaded the song from 'The Phantom of the Opera"! The 2004 movie is one of my favourites. Now I am listening to it and the next song is Shakira's Hay Amores(movie song for the love in the time of cholera). The interesting part is that i am reading this book now and because of the book i began to love this song so much.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Once again, listening to the spectacular flamenco guitar skills of Juan Quesada (Asturias). I think I could be happy if this were the ONLY song on my playlist at work, and it played on repeat. It's not, though, and it's a treat to hear each time it plays. :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I found an Elvis Costello song I like! Usually his voice bothers me, but not this time. It's called "Pump It Up".

message 247: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) 1. First Week - Graham Colton Band
2. Geeki-Ganger 3 - Martian Successor Nadesico (anime)
3. Jack's Lament - from Nightmare Before Christmas
4. Feeling Fine - L'Arc-en-Ciel
5. Song of Rice-Husking - Sakura

And to show how wild that list leaped the next one was I'm A Bomb - Natasha Bedingfield.

That's an old song. I'm surprised you don't like more Elvis Costello. Hm. Now I'm in the mood for him.

There are times such as this/she would be tempted to spit/if she wasn't so lady-like...
