After a morning of revising and trashing what I'd spent a month composing, now I'm studying for the Praxis: Language and Literature Content Examinations, and seriously freaking out.

Perhaps I should have stayed with being a waitress or hairdresser forever? What am I doing in grad school?

This is probably not what you're talking about, but I cannot tell you the... cognitive dissonance I've experienced over the past few years about who I am as an educated person and who I was as a working-class person. And was I maybe happier before the education? Particularly before the graduate education? And since my motivations for getting an education were mostly about my own enlightenment, not about becoming a "profesional," all the hoop-jumping of grad school really grated on me... When I took my Master's comps, I DID freak out. I sat in the graduate office that morning BAWLING. I could not get it together to go into the testing room. My advisor about shit! She ended up plying me with M&Ms and a box of Kleenex, and I got through it, but DAMN that was oe of the most miserable experiences of my life. In fact, when I was done with the theory portion on the first day, I knew I had failed. I was certain! When we got our results, turned out I passed w/departmental honors and that made me almost as sick, b/c as my advisor said, "Mindy, your self-perception is seriously warped."

Um, I don't know where I was going with that. I am glad I got (and am getting) all the education now, but there is lots not to like about academia, and it was definitely a struggle... I still have days when I miss being a bartender.

Oh, man. You don't know how much I needed to hear that. I'm sitting here full of guilt for the previous six weeks of summer in which I didn't study for this exam, thinking I know it all already. What if I blow and fail and am laughed out of school?

Sally, our students DREAD the Praxis. Everyone passes sooner or later, though. I hate the fact the tests cost so much. Plus...it's not an exam for which you can easily study.

I have at last found and downloaded the song from 'The Phantom of the Opera"! The 2004 movie is one of my favourites. Now I am listening to it and the next song is Shakira's Hay Amores(movie song for the love in the time of cholera). The interesting part is that i am reading this book now and because of the book i began to love this song so much.
