Crystallizes life into four simple words, three angry, napalm-shitting chords, and a stomping Nuremberg backbeat (minus the Nazi rhetoric). These are some seriously pissed-off Poms.
And I'm not in a very good mood either.

For the first year after the twins' space pod crash landed in our backyard on its way from Jupiter on a mission of chaos and anarchy, me and the helicopter mom were up every three hours to feed them. Holy Christ, those were some dark times... Sleep deprivation can lead to insanity and insanity can lead to listening to Echo and the Bunnymen's (the original Trenchcoat Mafia) stunning debut album on constant rotation while Michael Rennie in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (on mute) warns foolhardy earthlings to cease their nuclear follies and wondering just how the hell you're going to get up for work in a few hours.

Whenever I start to lament the demise of modern music, a band like this will show up and kick my ass. Watts somehow wedge their tough rock 'n' roll into the same space between punk and power pop that once made the Replacements seem so necessary. Smart enough to title a song "Sweetheart of the Radio", cool enough to cover Angel City (aka the Angels) and, godbless'em, brave enough to even try at all - Watts is a band after my own heart.
Downloaded this trio of excellent bootlegs yesterday:

Blondie @ Hammersmith Odeon, 1/12/1980
Terrific sound quality; both the band and Deborah Harry put in feisty, high-spirited performances, peppered by some quality choices in cover songs. Her rendition of Donna Summer's I Feel Love is worth the download time.

The Clash, Lyceum London, 12/28/1978
The one band I wish I could have seen perform live. This outstanding bootleg, 75 minutes of pure, relentless Clash, kind of makes up for this hole in my life.

Bruce Springsteen, Nassau Coliseum, 12/28/1980
According to the Springsteen fan boards, this is the best Bruce bootleg around. I concur. Nearly 4 hours long, it's a hell of a lot better sounding (and the E Street Band is on fire that night) than the "official" live Springsteen sets.

Look on the bright side: If you'd seen them around this time, you'd now probably be well into your 50's by now. "Give 'Em Enough Rope" tour I believe (?). They were really something live.

I have this same boot only it's called "Nassau Night." Another one to look for (or I can burn you a copy) is "Summertime Bruce," live @ the Cleveland Agora, 8/9/78 ("Darkness" tour).

Clark, I've got the Bruce gig at the Cleveland Agora on queue. I was able to find a complete soundboard gig for this one.

Next question: Clark, have you heard the new New York Dolls album?

Regrettably, no. I'm slipping. It comes out on the 15th and I'll probably pick it up, although the idea of them covering the David Jo solo track "Funky But Chic" worries me a bit.

When the nuclear winter truly sets in and punk, surf, garage, rock, blues and any other music not produced by a robot or a DJ stealing someone else's songs are all dead, Keith Richards will be The Last Man Standing, er, Slouching, uh, Semi-Conscious.
It may not be saying much, considering their track record, but Talk is Cheap is the best solo album by any member of the Rolling Stones.

I downloaded that one over the weekend, but I still haven't had a chance to listen to it. The Nassau Coliseum 1980 gig is spectacular. If you want, I can burn you a copy.

I agree. But even though he sounds nearly comatose, I also like this one:

Too bad it's not Horton Hears The Who, eh?

Neither is my wife, but I married her anyway.

A party record no Saturday night should be without. Even though it's only Wednesday afternoon.

More hooks than a pirate convention:

the flaming lips - when you smile/psychiatric explorations of the foetus with needles (live)
asher roth - as i em
dm stith - braid of voices
jens lekman - your arms around me
calexico - fractured air (tornado watch)
eels - mental
the flaming lips - one more robot/sympathy 3000-21
the unicorns - ghost mountain
the clientele - sketch
loney, dear - the battle of trinidad and tobago
uriah heep - gypsy
the moldy peaches - d.2. boyfriend
tricky - feed me

the black keys - attack & release
the black keys - brothers
beach house - teen dream
gonjasufi - a sufi and a killer

With the Replacements' reputation for massive, staggering alcohol intake, you never really knew if drummer Chris Mars was too drunk to give a shit what was unfolding in front of him on stage every night - ala Charlie Watts - or simply biding his time until the wheels of his nefarious plan for post-'Mats world domination could be set into motion. Who woulda thunk the guy could string together verses, choruses, and hooks like this?
Knocks into a cocked hat anything Paul Westerberg's come up with since the split.

The Ultra 5's reverence for the chemical imbalances that powered the earliest rock and roll, garage, rockabilly, and mutant R&B may not be not be as obsessive as that of The Cramps, but that's not to say it's any less authentic. It all throbs, oozes, and pulsates like the soundtrack from one of the drug scare films we laughed through back in junior high school, Sonny and Cher warning against experimenting with dangerous hallucinogens and gateway drugs like pot.

From the minute the laser beam zaps whatever it is on CD's that produce sound, the Backwood Creatures serve up a brainshaking, hook-filled, reason for living, joyously bashing out one punchy, buzzing backwash of wattage after another and whoa-whoa-whoa-ing their way right into your cerebral cortex.
To summarize: (five greasy-looking badasses + guitars, bass, amps and drums + sense of purpose and fun) minus pretension = Five stars.
