If there's ever been any doubt Dee Dee's judgment was seriously clouded by copious drug intake, delusions of grandeur, and simply being short-shrifted in the genetic crapshoot, look no further for the truth as he wiggers out and prefigures The Beastie Boys, Vanilla Ice, and Eminem.

Worth owning not only for yuks, but for a few tunes which would slot nicely onto a Ramones mix CD.

Eight years he's gone and I still miss the guy.

Flat-out beautiful melodies, hooks, and songs from these Aussies or New Zealanders or whatever the hell they are. Provincialism is moot when you can make everything in the world right again, even for a short three or four minutes, simply by spinning a record.

Oh, hell yeah! "Mean to Me" and "Something So Strong" are bloody genius.

But you know, I thought each successive album got progressively worse until by the end, I just didn't care for them much.

But this one's a keeper.

I've always regretted not seeing the English Beat during their prime. That first album is amazing!

Do you know if their line-up includes the two guys who left to form Fine Young Cannibals?

I saw the Fine Young Cannibals once back when they were just coming up...great show, actually...De La Soul was the support act.

Partly out of necessity but mostly by choice, I sat out most of the 1990's when it came to music, fully convinced that if I kept my head rooted in the sand long enough, the pasty, whining spectre of Kurt Cobain would eventually burn out or just fade away.

And then on the Eighth Day, God created The Wildhearts.

While the band may have been a bit too in thrall to the myths of the rock ‘n’ roll life to hold their focus for very long (unmissable one week, missing the next), their roller coaster ride into the sun derailing spectacularly on several notable occasions, they were capable of some glorious highs and the finest 52 minutes of hard-edged, punked-up, hook-hearty pop tunes you could ever steal.

“Earth vs. The Wildhearts” is a treasure chest of anthems and nothing but, mostly about, um, rock and roll and girls and howling at the moon and feeling your oats and living every moment like it’s your last and when you really think about it, what else really matters? Hooks, power chords, and huge sing-along choruses soar into a cloudless sky, divebomb, ricochet off each other, then crash, burn, and fall to the ground in a shower of sparks, glam, metal, and pop. And these aren’t your run-of-the mill hooks; the emphatic “TV Tan” and "My Baby Is a Headfuck," the stuttering “Caffeine Bomb” and corking “Loveshit” are harder to shake than the “Indonesian junk” Cheap Trick romanticizes in “Surrender.”

The term “genius” gets thrown around a lot. I know I’ve done it. But I think I can safely pull it out when it comes to The Wildhearts. If you have a heart, a brain, a soul, an ass, a set of gonads or ovaries, “Earth vs. The Wildhearts” will change your life.

"Let's Get Married" - The Proclaimers.

Not to be confused with those other Scottish Reid brothers, the Proclaimers don't so much tug on my heartstrings with this one as tear my ticker right out of my chest cavity and hold it up for the entire world to see, especially if I've been drinking. But don't quote me on it; I'll deny it.

Food for thought: "Alright, you can get a cat just as long as it barks."

Beautiful...

message 1639: by [deleted user] (new)

For the record, there’s no one in the Len Price 3 named Len, Price, or Len Price, but there are three of ‘em. From the sound and front wrapper of their second album “Rentacrowd,” though, you’d swear there was someone named Townshend, Moon, or maybe even Weller wandering dazed amongst the rubble of smashed guitars, drums, and amps.

Anyone with the common sense and good taste to cozy up with the often unstable discographies of The Who and The Jam won’t have to scramble much for reference points once the album-opening title track cues up, the genetic codes of “Substitute,” “In the City,” “I Can’t Reach You,” and “I Can’t Explain” cracked, DNA strands untwisted and then reassembled in the wrong order. In this case, “wrong” means “right.”

The touchstones are beyond obvious unless you’ve recently awoken from a 40-year coma or are young enough to believe Elastica actually wrote that riff in “Connection”: early Who, back when they were more concerned with dodging shrapnel and punching each others’ lights out than rock operas, Meher Baba, or festival seating bans, and the first three Jam albums. You know, the ones before Paul Weller came up with the bright idea of ditching that red Rickenbacker, two-tone shoes, and peg leg trousers and exchanging them for ski sweaters, blue-eyed soul, and a twelve-string acoustic.

Although naysayers may gripe that the band don’t have an original idea in their 30-something heads, I say if you’re gonna steal, steal from the best. And while there are sure to be some others who can’t figure out if these guys are serious or merely taking the piss out of the British Invasion, there’s no denying they take the stale stance on simple, Yardbirds-styled banality and burn it like a brassiere. Let’s face it: there’s nothing truly new on the planet when it comes to rock and roll and to the Len Price 3’s eternal credit, they embrace that tenet wholeheartedly and don’t try to re-invent the wheel. Or even force you to think, for that matter. Good on ‘em!

Petra, that new Bettye LaVette album is simply magnificent.

message 1641: by [deleted user] (new)

Albums on heavy rotation these past few days:

1. Eels, End Times (since RA loves 'em - or is it Mark Oliver Everett - I figured I'd give 'em a spin to see what the fuss is about)
2. Rush, Exit...Stage Left (not one of the better live albums ever recorded, but Neil Peart's drum solo on YYZ is jaw-dropping)
3. Peter Gabriel, Scratch My Back
4. Grizzly Bear, Veckatimest
5. Spoon, Transference
6. Jonsi, Go
7. The Raveonettes, In and Out of Control
8. Soundtrack to Velvet Goldmine
9. The Dark Was the Night compilation album

message 1642: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) I agree Gus. It was perfect for sunday morning coffee and newspaper.
She has a fabulous voice.

message 1643: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments End Times is a slow, introspective one, Gus...second part of a trilogy...some great songs on there but I wouldn't say it's their best.

message 1644: by [deleted user] (new)

It's not bad, RA. Agreed that it's slow and introspective, a bit mellow, even. I'll give it some more spins.

message 1645: by Brittomart (last edited Jul 27, 2010 09:23AM) (new)

Brittomart Gus, Transference or Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga? Just between those two, not the band's discography as a whole.

Janine, Extraordinary Machine is my shit. "Oh Well" and "O'Sailor" are two of my favourite songs of all time.

My playlist at the moment:

1. "All Talk" - Kid Cudi feat Chip Tha Rapper, LCD Soundsystem and Christian Bale
2. "Drumming Song" - Florence + the Machine
3. "Skyscrapers" - OK Go
4. "Asking for It" - Hole
5. "Get Gone" - Fiona Apple
6. "Black" - Pearl Jam
7. "Quicksand" - La Roux
8. "Idioteque" - Amanda Palmer (Radiohead cover)
9. "Trunk Muzik" - Yelawolf
10. "If You Don't Like Me, Don't Look at Me" - Morrissey

message 1646: by [deleted user] (new)

Not really a Spoon fan. I couldn't get behind Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, but I figured I'd give Transference a shot. So far, so good.

Say, how are those Amanda Palmer Radiohead covers?

message 1647: by Brittomart (last edited Jul 27, 2010 10:20AM) (new)

Brittomart Welllllll, I should say that I'm a huge Dresden Dolls and Amanda Palmer fan. I'm glad that her label released her and she can put out whatever she wants.

I think this Radiohead cover album is a bit self-indulgent. "Listen to me sing Radiohead on my Ukelele!" If you were a fan of Amanda before, then you'll still be a fan after, but I don't think it'll bring in any new converts. Highlights? "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Idioteque." The two covers of "Creep" sound exactly alike, and I don't understand why there are two of them. She lengthens the high notes and sings them slightly off-key (she's screeching actually), so you know, whatever. I bought the album (err download) because I'm a fan, but I would have preferred an EP of all new music.

If you asked me this question a year ago, I probably would have answered, "OMG THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER" because I was a total fangirl, but her twittering and blogging has kinda....yeah...lost me.

Knowing where to steal has always been every great artist’s dirty little secret ever since a certain strain of Heidelberg man began banging on a garbage can with the skull bone of a chimpanzee, but there’s no shame in laying all your cards out on the table face up either.

Prima Donna’s “After Hours” welds the New York Dolls’ medulla to Mott the Hoople’s oblongata with blowzy, squonking saxophone, bursting out of anonymity in a rush of static, dirty noise and bash and clatter with 10 two and three-minute rave-ups full of raggedy chonk, curdled romance, and girls who go bump in the night that make their points and scram. The songs, that is, not the girls. If these guys continue to pour on the pomp, circumstance, strut, and preen, something tells me the women are there to stay.

And you can dance to every blessed minute of it. Prima Donna should be someone’s heroes by now. With their own cartoon show and everything.
