Isn't Henry Higgins the older boy in Ramona Quimby's neighborhood?

message 108: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) RA: Yes. It is frightening when all my songs are on the Poddie. I removed a lot of my big band, holiday songs, and operas. Needed some adrenaline songs for work.

Koeeoaddi: Oooh! I don't have that one!! I'll have to iTunes tonight!!! Squee which reminds me the opening theme song for Lie to Me is released!! D/l time!

Sally: Wikipedia says it's Henry Huggins.

Tanja: you're so quick with the wikipedia info. I wish I had the patience to check there. I usually just cast stuff out here and wait for Bun or Jackie to set me straight.

message 110: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) *giggles*

I love skipping over to wikipedia or google for info. In fact, on this jaunt, I read a lil about Ramona, hopped to the Ramona TV series, remembered the main character is Sarah Polley and looked at her site, read about her filmography since Road to Avonlea, saw a movie she starred in opposite Mark Ruffalo, peeked at his site to see a weird movie he was in opposite Meg Ryan, then looked at the sister - Jennifer something Leigh's site and noticed she's in Weeds the TV series.

So ya never know what'll turn up from a random search! HEE!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Did you know the Ramona books are set in Portland, Oregon?

I'm listening to "Money, Money, Money" by ABBA. I think Tanja and I would get along very well, musically and otherwise. :D

message 112: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) Jackie: YUP! Go Portland! I loved reading Ramona books as a child. I should re-read when I get my kindle. Btw - cheers on ABBA! That's one of my fav songs by them next to Waterloo.

Thanks Koeeaddi! I forget how I ended with Caledonia...must have been from a game I was on. We did a musical swap meet. Named a bunch of songs and swapped. Definitely have to buy the others!

And to show my GIRLY side listening to:
White Lines by Alexz Johnson (Instant Star Season II)

message 113: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) This is purely torturing those who know this band...and to earworm their songs...

Africa cued!

I will share a silly. When I was younger when people were talking about Toto, I thought why is Dorothy's dog playing music? ;_;

message 114: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments The Smiths...I Know It's Over...one of my favorite songs ever...

Sarah | 13814 comments Ramones party at Reagan's place! Sweet.

message 117: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Good first post, Reagan...

(Did I ever mention once Johnny Ramone stomped on my hand? I'm still proud of that. He was pissed at me.)

message 118: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) Awesome tunes, Reagan!

message 119: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Wow, RA. That's excellent. I'd like to say that I got my first underage beer-at-a-show at a Ramones show, but it was actually my second.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Randomanthony wrote: "Good first post, Reagan...

OMG, that's so cool, RA! I hope he was wearing sneakers, though, not Doc Martens. It would be less cool for you with a broken hand.
I always picture the Ramones in sneakers. And jeans and t-shirts too, of course. :D

message 121: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I saw the Ramones in, oh, I want to say 86 or so at Metro in Chicago. I was right near the stage (right where the Bjork/Sugarcubes beer incident took place) and the Ramones did this choreographed thing where Johnny and Dee Dee would move up to the lip of the stage and then back. One of the times Johnny got mad at all the people reaching for him and stomped on my feet. I think he was wearing sneakers, Jacks, because I don't remember my hand hurting.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments 1986? You must have been pretty young at the time - what, 16? And if you had plenty of beer in you, then, yeah, a sneaker stomping wouldn't have made much impact.

message 123: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Were you reaching for him? I'd always imagined that the fabled hand stamping happened at some little club like the Fox, and you were casually leaning over your beer and he got annoyed with your cheekiness.

message 124: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments No, I don't think I was reaching for him as much as I banging on the stage or just sort of resting my arms on the stage like all the cool kids.

I was probably sixteen...I would have turned seventeen that September if my math is correct....

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments So, would you describe your younger self as a punk, RA?

Currently listening to "Nicotine and Gravy" - Beck...

message 126: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jul 01, 2009 09:32AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Depends on the era, Jacks. At sixteen, if "punk" meant stunningly unfashionable (and not in a planned way) music-obsessed science fiction nerds who did a lot of drugs and were afraid to talk to girls, then sure, let's go with "punk".

message 127: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments Wow RA, I think that our 16 yo selves would have probably been mistaken for twins.

Tanja, I find an absurd amount of new music from TV shows. Grey's Anatomy is a great source. I think my dream job would be selecting the music for shows like that. Anyway, great idea for a thread!

1. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks- Witch Mountain Brigade (from Pig Lib):
I have randomly run into loads of people at bars or shows since moving to PDX (Hi Montambo!) yet no Malkmus yet. I think that would be the pinnacle of my Portland experience.

2. Moby- The Sky Is Broken (from Play):
I just recently added this album back into iTunes after burning myself out on it back in high school. I think I remember this song being on The X-Files at one point in an episode directed by Gillian Anderson.

3. Bob Marley & The Wailers- Time Will Tell (from Natural Mystic):
Because there is nothing better to listen to in the sunshine than a little reggae.

4. Aphex Twin- Meltphace 6 (from Drukqs):
RDJ is my personal lord and savior. His beats quite literally melt my mind.

5. Ann Peebles- How Strong Is A Woman (from Straight From The Heart):
I've been on a huge old soul kick lately. Peebles has a great voice and when you toss in the women's lib lyrics, you get a rather fun song of empowerment.

yay, shuffle didn't embarrass me today! Too often it finds the guilty secrets that are hidden on the hard drive.

message 128: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) Logan: You have Spears, doncha?

I think I recall that Moby song on X-Files. Hmm. GOOGLE TIME!

message 129: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Logan - that would be an awesome job - selecting songs for TV and movies. And somehow you don't accuse your favorite artists of selling out if their songs appear in that context, unlike commercials.

message 130: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments Tanja, I admit to nothing Spears-related, ever. Though sometimes I can't stop Rihanna's "Please Don't Stop The Music" from dominating the playlist.

Sarah, I always love it when I hear a song I already know on a show. I think "Ha! I knew them before they were on so-and-so!" I don't even really mind hearing good songs in commercials, given the state of the record industry. Anything that allows artists to continue to make music that shakes my bootie is fine by me (though I still wince in displeasure whenever that Of Montreal Outback Steakhouse commercial is on).

message 131: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments OK, so I'm not listening right now, but a friend took me to a show last weekend and turned me on to two awesome acts that were previously unknown to me, Heartless Bastards and Jenny Lewis. The show RAWKED, and I will be purchasing cds from both posthaste. (Oh, and the singer of HB is effin' HAWT! *meeeYOW*)

message 132: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I keep avoiding Jenny Lewis for some reason, but the couple of songs I've heard from her most recent album are excellent, and I should really suck it up and buy.

message 133: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Some stuff I didn't like, but overall her music was pleasurable (and actually a lot better live than the cds my friend played for me before the show). I like HB MUCH better!

message 134: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Wow. Mindy really is back. :)

message 135: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments And WAY too much! (But I'm back to unemployed now, so I can fritter my day away here w/o consequence. Except eyestrain. Ow.)

message 136: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments That's funny, Mindy. When I'm unemployed I find that I have no time for Goodreads, but once I'm somewhat gainfully employed I can not be torn away.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Wow. Somebody knows her New Order. That's an early, obscure track.

message 142: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) I wish I still had my New Order t-shirt from the 80s. Or my Joy Division subway poster. I'd put it in my office, which my boss would LOVE.

message 143: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ooh...yes...

high-fives Vanessa

I saw New Order a slew of times, the earliest 1985 or so at the Bismark in Chicago on the Low-Life tour. They did a few shows in America last year, including one at the Aragon, in Chicago, where they mixed in a few Joy Division songs. I'm an idiot for missing it.

message 144: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) I think I wrote a paper in sophomore English about the life of Ian Curtis. I'm sure the pages dripped with fifteen-year-old angst. Well, the angst wasn't fifteen, I was.

message 145: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Did anybody see that Joy Division biopic?

message 146: by Sally, la reina (new)

message 147: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) I've gotta check it out.

message 148: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yep, I did...liked it a lot...the detail was amazing...

message 149: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments Not to mention the soundtrack. Some of my favorite songs from that era, including Iggy's "Sister Midnight."

message 150: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jul 02, 2009 01:47PM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yes...remember, Ian was listening to Iggy the morning he died...

edit after freaking out Sarah Pi and Vanessa: "he" is Ian Curtis. Please excuse my subpar sentence structure.
