Yay yay yay...

I'm on a Stars kick this week...

message 703: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Maybe that's your memoir title: "Kicking the Stars".

OK, I know that's not what you said, but I liked it anyway.

message 704: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I haven't decided on a memoir title yet, Pi. I'm not that pithy, I'm afraid. I blame years of academic writing.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It looks like they've already got that wireless electricity going for them. ;)

Matthieu | 1009 comments "Down Colorful Hill" - Red House Painters

Anthemic, big, hurt, sad.

message 707: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I LOVE the Kinks. They were my first rock band.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments "Down by the River" - Neil Young

message 709: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments That's a GREAT song, Jackie. I can never listen to studio Neil, though... I love the energy of the live albums with Crazy Horse.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I should give those a listen sometime, Sarah Pi. I just have the Decade set on CD, which may have a couple of live tracks, but is mostly studio.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Exactly! And it's such a long cool jam, too, about murder.

message 712: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments This one doesn't even really explain why he shot her. Unusual.

Jackie -- try the version on Live at the Fillmore East.

And Down By the River isn't on Weld, but the second disc has Cortez the Killer, Powderfinger, Rockin' in the Free World, AND a blistering version of Like A Hurricane. I think I shall listen to it shortly. (OK, you can't listen to it shortly...it's fourteen minutes long)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments You can listen to it longingly, then, Sarah Pi. ;)

message 714: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I shall long for them to tour together again.

I love Neil's theory of guitar solos, in which you grab the neck of the guitar and throw yourself into a note. If that one doesn't sound good with what the rest of the band is playing, try playing a half note up or down. Once you find one you like, stick with it for a while.

Maybe you can apply that to your ukulele solos, Jackie.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That's how I sing along, anyways. :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments "Close to the Edit" - Art of Noise.

Dum, dum, dum, de dum dum dum dum DUM!!!

message 719: by Julie (new)

Julie | 568 comments "Wayfaring Stranger" - Jack White
"Thirteen Men" - Ann Margret
"Me and My Gin" - Bessie Smith
"Chicken Payback" - The Bees

And an album that I just got from Explosions in the Sky that I love- Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever.

message 720: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Jack White does a version of Wayfaring Stranger??? Must find that. I love that song in all permutations.

message 721: by Julie (new)

Julie | 568 comments That could be interesting.....

Sarah, his version was on the Cold Mountain soundtrack because he sang it in the movie. He has a couple of songs on there that are good.

message 722: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments "Kerosene" - Big Black

message 723: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Steve Albini is fucking awesome. I listened to a lot of Big Black, Rapeman, Shellac,
Jesus Lizard, et al in 11th grade.

Angel Dust---GREAT album!!!

message 726: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Sister is a tremendous record.

message 727: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Angel Dust is cool. When we bought new studio monitors we tested them with Angel Dust, The Afghan Whigs' 1965, and XTC's "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead".

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments The Drive-By Truckers levitation-inducing cover of Tom Petty's "Rebels" over and over again, in my office...

message 730: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments The new Polvo record is so fucking awesome.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Chopin's Piano Sonata #1, in C minor.

message 732: by Matthieu (last edited Sep 07, 2009 02:28PM) (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments I love Chopin—though I grew tired of endlessly practicing the études/nocturnes in my youth. I still find them to be glacially beautiful... even if my degraded finger dexterity has rendered them impossible.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I find Chopin to be excellent background music, but yes, a lot of his pieces are not particularly warm.

If you played the concert Etudes, then my hat is off to you. I tried to write you, but it seems you aren't accepting anything from me at this time.

message 738: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) They're each hard as hell to play. KD you naughty boy. lol

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I prefer Beethoven, both for listening to and to play. Not that I've played any Chopin, but I have played a few of Beethoven's bagatelles, and they're fun.

message 740: by Félix (last edited Sep 08, 2009 03:32PM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) Mozart for me, thanks. Or Vivaldi. And I can't play either.

message 741: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Chopin will make you chew your arm off while learning his music. 3rd Sonata nearly killed me.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Stephen wrote: "Chopin will make you chew your arm off while learning his music. 3rd Sonata nearly killed me."

Note to self: Do not attempt Chopin on the piano...

message 743: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) How old do I feel, I remember all of those.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments My dad used to say "Judas Priest!" instead of swearing. I don't think it had anything to do with the band, though.

message 745: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) KD this is a What are You Listening to Currently, thread. Post your booty off!

message 746: by [deleted user] (new)

The cover art is great KD, keep posting.

I had a little Smiths marathon the other night. Its nice to refresh yourself with their amazing work.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments That last cover, KD, looks like a drawering of Linda Blair. :)

message 750: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Or was just dropped.
