Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments It's purely coincidental - I threw instrumental holiday songs into the instrumental mix at work... and today's been a stream of Christmas songs.

Right now it's Satie's Gymnopedie 3. It's beautiful. It makes me want to cry.

I think I'm on the verge of being pushed passed my limit of being stressed out at work. I really need it right now.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments "Misirlou" - Dick Dale
"Helter Skelter" - The Beatles
"Take Five" - Dave Brubeck
"Skating" - Vince Guaraldi
"The Ride of the Valkyries" - Richard Wagner

Sarah | 13814 comments You've got some powerful instrumentals in there.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Yep! Today I'm listening to my "100 Songs" CD I made for another exchange. It's 100 songs on one CD, mp3 format, and I've got them arranged in Dewey Decimal order.
For example, skating is 796.9, and horseback riding (which is what the Valkyries are doing) is 798.2.

:)

message 505: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments That's awesome, Librarian.

message 506: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments How do you get 100 songs on one cd?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments You convert them into mp3 format, Mindy.

message 508: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I thought they already were in mp3 format if they're on your computer? Oh, I feel so unadvanced!

message 509: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments "Randy Described Eternity" - Built To Spill

Matt: Joanna Newsom. That was you right? (i would look back to be sure but GR is sooooooooooooooo slow) You know I actually kind of like that. I was surprised because we seem to have pretty different taste. didn't exactly like it at first but her voice is just so odd I couldn't help myself. I like her lyrics. Plus she makes my 5-year-old giggle uncontrollably, which I find irresistible. So, THANKS!

Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "You convert them into mp3 format, Mindy."

That would make sense since mp3 players can be quite small and still hold a lot of music(and the program) as compared to a regularly burned CD.

message 512: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Dang, KD.

message 513: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments OK, someone explain to me how to convert to mp3 format? I could've sworn all the songs on my computer are mp3s and only about 20 of them fit on a cd.

message 514: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments It's really all-occasion music!

message 515: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Mindy -- they're converting themselves back into audio format when you burn them onto CD, though they are still mp3 quality if they are stored on your computer as mp3s. Do you use iTunes? It's an easy configuration thing.

message 516: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Nah, I don't do the iTunes thing. So if I burned a cd as a data disc would it work that way? But then how would it play in my car?

message 517: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Some cars can read mp3s, some can't. Probably depends on how new your car is.

message 518: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Do you want to burn a data disc with 200 albums, or do you want to burn music files that will play in a cd player?

NP: MMJ Okonokos disc 2

message 520: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I want to burn a cd with 100 songs on it like Jackie did! (And I want it to play in my car, which I think does play mp3s since it plays all the 20-song mixes I burn, right?)

message 521: by Sarah (last edited Aug 11, 2009 10:51AM) (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments No, the 20 song mixes are mp3s that your computer has converted into AAC format. If you want to try it, you need to go into the options/preferences for your burning software, and tell it to leave the files as mp3s when it burns them. Then test it in your car.

message 522: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments OMG, this shit is way too complicated! Jackie if I send you 5 20-song cds will you put that all on one disc for me?

:)

message 523: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
No. You can put many more albums on a disc, but if you do anything on it that isn't a playable file then that disc will pop back out of the player. CD players can't read that format.

Sometimes the discs you people make won't play in my old, pre -8 disc player I use at school in my office.

message 524: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I'm trying to say you can move files to the disc drive and put many on there, or you can open iTunes (or whatever) and burn individual songs.

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Bad day all around, huh, Sally?

*hugs*

message 527: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Can I burn 100 songs on a disc with iTunes? If so, I might use it after all.

message 528: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments OK, here's another question. If I saved all the music on my computer to a disc as non-playable data files, could I then remove it from the disc and convert it back to playable files?

message 529: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I don't think it is possible to put 100 songs on a CD. Even a rewritable one. Can we use the analogy of an old LP album?

message 530: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Yes to 553.

message 531: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Oh cool! (#555) I need to reformat and I have WAY too much music that I don't want to delete!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Mindy wrote: "Can I burn 100 songs on a disc with iTunes? If so, I might use it after all."

Yes, that's how I did it, Mindy. When you're burning you're CD in iTunes, you can choose the format you want it to use for the burning.

message 533: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments And then the 100 songs play on a cd player?

message 534: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Not necessarily. Some CD players will recognize it, some won't, likely depending on the age of the player. When you buy one now it says "CD/DVD/MP3 compatible" or whatever combination it can play.

message 535: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
No, then you can put it in your computer and open it with iTunes. Then you can make playlists and burn 20 songs/4.7 gigabytes worth of music to a disc.

message 536: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments OK, I'm back to this is too damn complicated. I'll just get a bigger mp3 player eventually with all the music I own on it.

message 537: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
It's the way the future is headed. That's why it's a little silly we're still exchanging discs. But I like them to play in my car.

message 538: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments That's way easier.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I think as long as they're going after people for sharing music electronically, I'm going to stick to CDs for exchanges.

Boston U Student Fined $675,000 Over Music Sharing

AppScout — It's hard to place a value on a really good song, right? For everyone but the record industry, perhaps. If they're to believed, that number comes out to roughly $22,500. That's how much one Boston University student is being asked to pay. He's been hit with a $675,000 fine for stealing 30 songs. The student, Joel Tenenbaum, and his lawyer, Charles Nesson, plan to appeal the decision. The record industry...

message 541: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments That's a great fortune. I also like "YOU LOVE CHINESE FOOD".

Django Haskins and his band The Old Ceremony have a song or two in Chinese. They're pretty songs. Not exactly traditional, though.

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments Mindy, you were totally on it when you asked that if you burned it as a data disc could you then fit 100 songs on. That's exactly what Sally et al were saying, albeit in different jargon. I love that we have such a specialized technical language for each aspect of the computer that now we can't even talk cross-program without an interpreter.

Oh yeah, today I've been listening to Florence & The Machine's new record, Lungs. It's kind of what I would expect from a less dramatic Dresden Dolls fronted by Sia with more of a pop sound added in.

message 548: by Knarik (new)

Knarik Sally is right about discs. Mindy, you wouldn't be able to listen to a CD with 100 songs on it in your car.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Actually, I can listen to my 100 songs CD in my car, but that's because my car CD player also plays mp3s.

message 550: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments I can! mp3 discs play on some stereos but not all. It's something better tested out.
