SOLVED. Girl, born, dies, lives on in a parallel story. [s]

Please help - i wanted to buy this new book - it was recomended to me as a new book in the last year.

It starts in a cafe in europe - maybe vienna, berlin? Some connection to nazis and spies i believe, so the time in the book is around wwii.
It then goes to the birth of a baby girl to a woman. The doctor doesnt make it, and the baby dies ( darkness falls). However in the next chapter, the story picks up as if the doc made it, and describes the life of the babe.

As a young girl she drowns ( darkness falls - a similar expression follow every time she dies), in the next chapter someone notices and saves her...
