Barb The option is still there, but it's hidden. Go to your friend's GR page. Under the name, you'll see a box that says Friends. Next to that, click on the little gray More. In the drop down menu, Message is right at the top.

Hi MaryJo,

They have recently changed this, as I found out last week. If you go to someone’s profile page, below their name you’ll see a box that says “friends.” There will be a check to the left if you are friends with them. To right of that is a drop-down box that says “more.” They really should have made that bigger, at least as big as the “friend” button. Anyway, click on that to send a message.

It's still there. I can even send you a PM, from your profile. Under the "more" drop down menu, directly beside the check-marked "Friends" button.

For an author, it's the drop down arrow directly beside the "Follow Author" button.

Barb In two of this group's threads -- Find a book or series and Book and series discussions -- are several posts whose topic headings are in another language. I'm not sure what the content is, but when I translated a similar post in the group I moderate, I realized it wasn't anything I wanted to promote in my group, so I deleted it.

I guess they have already been removed but, just in case, do you remember if they were inside any post or as specific thread?

message 259: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 124 comments This has been happening for a few weeks. One of the groups I co-mod had it happen and at the same time I received a personal friend request that also invited me to partake in interesting pastimes (can’t have read my age on profile). When I contacted GR Support their reply was they were aware and screening. So it could be they’ve already picked it up. They said if you see more then to flag and advise.them.

I just looked and yes, they've already been removed. They showed up in the list when I checked the group for unread messages. I didn't want to click on them, so I don't know if they were independent posts or part of a thread, sorry. The good thing is that now they're gone :)

I’m glad the posts have already been removed. For some reason, I never received notification of new posts in this thread yesterday, though it shows that I am following with instant notification. 😕

message 263: by Barb (last edited Aug 16, 2019 04:38AM) (new)

Barb Heather, since early spring, I haven't been getting notifications of new posts in *any of the threads I follow in any of my 15+ Goodreads groups. Before the GR Feedback group went away, I posted there -- as did many others who were having the same problem -- but none of the GR powers-that-be ever did anything about it, so I've had to get in the habit of checking threads 'manually' each day.

Lina Hansen | 15 comments Hi,
I'm a (trad-published) author and I wanted to ask if there is anything I can do to get my debut novel into the "new release" or any other lists/discussions that help promote the story. Sorry if I come across as pushy, that's actually not my style, but I have to try. Thanks for organising the cozy corner - I found quite a few great reads in here (Yes, I AM a reader as well).
Thanks so much

Heather L (wordtrix) | 27537 comments Mod
Hi Lina,

First, I would suggest you start by reading the rules for self-promotion, found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Second, all self-promo should be posted to the following board: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group.... Any self-promotion posted to other boards or discussions may be deleted by group moderators.

As for including your book on our shelves or lists, please note this group is dedicated to the cozy sub-genre. Only cozies are added to our group bookshelf, and authors, editors and publishers are no longer allowed to add books. If your book is a cozy, you can contact moderator Marisa, who compiles a monthly list of new releases.

Hope this helps!

Heather

this helps indeed! Thanks for your tips - and for organising the cozy group, this is very much appreciated. I'm a forum moderator myself (on Wattpad), so I know how much work is involved.
Stay safe and stay healthy,
Lina

message 269: by SANDYE (last edited Jun 11, 2020 01:37AM) (new)

SANDYE (sandye_c) I just joined this great group a few moments ago. I have a couple quick questions about the challenge rules to make sure I do them correctly!

1. Is there a page count minimum that has to be followed?

2. I joined on June 10th, can I use books read a few days ago for the challenges I've joined here, or does it have to be books finished after I joined?

3. When we've completed a challenge is there anything we need to do? Post a separate "challenge completed" comment, or edit our original challenge post showing it's done?

Sorry if I missed these answers somewhere. I tried to read all the newbie information I could find. TIA for your time!

Heather L (wordtrix) | 27537 comments Mod
Hi Sandye,

1. No page limits. This is your challenge, whether you want to only count children’s books or only use novels or novellas over 100 pages.

2. Any books read in June may be used for the June or Summer challenges.

3. Most people who commit early to the challenges usually update their initial post in the discussion, then leave a new message to, for example, “see updated post 23.” I was also going to refer you to the members personal challenge section, but see you’ve already found that.

I personally don’t post my progress until I’ve finished, as I like to see where the reading takes me and invariably end up changing my mind many times. Or I pull several books to fit one challenge criteria and then see which calls to me most. And sometimes I’ll be reading a book for another group and realize it fits a challenge.

˜”*°•.˜”*°• Sheri •°*”˜.•°*”˜ | 28 comments I have a question about the "Currently Reading" discussions. For instance, will this months books have a specific place to be discussed or are they placed together under the heading "Featured Author—September 2020—Jenn McKinlay" and everyone posts about any and all books they've read by the featured author?

message 273: by Heather L , Cozy Mysteries Moderator (last edited Sep 14, 2020 08:20PM) (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) | 27537 comments Mod
Hi Sheri,

We don’t do a group read as most other groups do. We have a featured author and post one or two of their books on the homepage so people can see which author we are reading. During the month, members can read whichever book they want by that author.

For example, with this month’s author Jenn McKinlay, I have read all of the books published under her Lucy Lawrence pseudonym, am only up to book five in her “Library Lovers” series, and have books in some of her other series I’ve not yet gotten to. I’m actually having a hard time deciding which one to read this month.

Some may be reading this author for the first time, others may be further along. For this reason, we ask people to use the “spoiler” tag when talking about important plot points, so as not to ruin anything for others. Otherwise you are welcome to read and discuss as you like.

All discussions are under the “Featured Author” section of the sight, with the most recent one at top of the board.

Bruce Leonard | 4 comments Hello,

I don't know where to find the Self-Promotion Folder. I joined Goodreads and Cozy Mysteries discussion not long ago. I have read a lot of the posts but haven't felt compelled to comment, other than perhaps introducing myself a while ago.

My cozy mystery, Quilt City Murders, is available today, Feb. 7, published by TouchPoint Press. If I'm allowed to mention this fact, how do I do so within the rules of this site?

Thank you for your time.

Best,
Bruce Leonard

Bruce,

The Self-Promotion folder is located near the bottom of the group home page. Unfortunately my copy/paste function is not working at the moment, so I can’t do a direct link.

I would suggest the “Find a book or series” section:

Lou Collins (loucollins) | 3 comments Dear admins,

I hope this message finds you well. I'm conducting market research to create an immersive cozy mystery book box and would like to gather feedback from cozy mystery lovers. I can see that this group is a community of passionate cozy mystery readers, and wonder if you'd allow me to post a link to my survey in the group?

The survey consists of 8 multiple choice questions and should only take a few minutes to complete. Your members' responses would be incredibly valuable in helping me create a subscription box that meets the needs and desires of the cozy mystery community.

Thank you for considering my request. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Katie | 2 comments Hello! I’ve been in the group for a bit but new to engaging with the group. The timing finally worked out and I’d like to read the October book the group is reading but I can’t figure out how things work from there. Is there a particular thread where the group discusses the book? Or do I need to join something specifically related to the book?
Apologies for the newbie questions but thanks I’m advance for any assistance!

message 297: by Heather L , Cozy Mysteries Moderator (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) | 27537 comments Mod
Hi Katie,

We don’t have a group read, we have a featured author which allows people to try the first book in a series by that author or pick up where you left off if it’s a series you’ve followed from the start. The thread for October will be posted this week. I usually try to get the next month’s discussions up during the last week of the current month, but I’ve been sick this month and am a bit behind.

MaryJo Dawson | 857 comments It was last April when a post was put up that notifications were temporarily suspended, but it stated specifically to phones.

I have no been receiving e-mail notifications for quite some time on what books my friends are reading, have read, want to read, or their reviews. I miss this way to find out about new authors or reads for myself and thought it was a vital service provided by goodreads.
Am I missing something here?

message 300: by Barb (new)
