If it gets really bad, you can make your profile private. At that point only friends can send you anything. (Mine is private largely for this reason.)

Maybe you can tell me why my Goodreads Groups digests don't arrive in my e-mail. If I refresh my information, I get a digest or two, then it stops again.

Hi Norma! I honestly don't know why that would happen. Perhaps the Goodreads Feedback or one of the other mods might be of assistance?

Norma, I think you should contact goodreads support and post at feedback group. There are a lot of similar reports at that group.

I have a consistent problem with getting anything from Goodreads, including this group. I fiddle with settings and reapprove my e-mail address from time to time. I then get one or two posts from everything (including what my friends are reading, monthly notices of what's new from Goodreads---you get the idea), but then nothing until I try again. I've put a post on the librarian group without answer (that I know of) as well. Is there any answer to this? My e-mail is rhuss@willowgavles.com I thank you very, very much if you can help me solve this!

Hi Norma
This is a problem that needs to be directed to the GR support team. Email them at: support@goodreads.com and relay the above information to them. The few times I've had problems, they were able to fix them within a day or two.

Thank you. It's working again at the moment, but if it stops again, I'll do that. (Answer much appreciated!)

Hi Robin,

You can add a profile pic by editing your profile. Way up at top right of the screen, you'll see an arrow. Click on that, then on "edit profile." Once inside that, you should see a place at top right of the screen that says "add photo" -- or something to that effect. You can then add any photo from your computer or an online site.

Nell | 1225 comments There's a post in the "What Do You Think" folder offering free Kindle copies of an author's book. The thread belongs in the Self-Promotion folder. Also, the first comment on the thread is both inappropriate language and contains spoilers. The poster is a new member of GR and of this group. She's also a fan of the author. That makes me suspect a sock puppet.

I have a recurring problem following the Goodreads groups I'm a member of becsuse it keeps cutting me off. It's happened again. I manage to get all my posts from groups, what everyone is reading, etc. then it all stops. No e-mails. I keep trying to get it started, but when I do, it may last a day. This time it lasted a week or so. Is this happening to anyone else, or just to me?

message 117: by Heather L , Cozy Mysteries Moderator (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) | 27537 comments Mod
Hi Norma, I'm wondering if this could be a problem with your service provider, rather than Goodreads, since you said previously that you had contacted GR support? Have you checked spam/junk folders to see if any newsletters or group emails are being rerouted there? Have you added GR to your contact list?

Also, If you have more than one email account, you could try switching to which one GR emails are sent to ascertain if it is an email provider issue or could be something else. I add this last one as I once had this issue, eons ago, when I had an AOL account that would not accept emails from Yahoo groups (Yahoo emails were fine, just not from their groups). When I switched them to go to a different email account, the issue was resolved.

I'm sorry I don't know what else to suggest, or how to resolve your issues. :-/

I did contact Goodreads feedback at someone's suggestion. They have a place for bugs and someone is working on it. Actually, I just got some e-mail from Goodreads, so maybe it is fixed. And thanks for the suggestions.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Maybe it's just me, but the "self-promo" thread for Paper Doll is just annoying the crap out of me. Every day or so the guy posts another great review and "fascinating" piece about himself link. He doesn't post about anything else. Could the thread maybe be closed? I don't mind a self-promo blurb in the proper place, but this guy is ridiculous! He's spamming us, plain and simple, even if it is under "self-promo". And you can absolutely bet your last dollar I'll never read his book!!

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 33 comments Melodie wrote: "He's spamming us, plain and simple, even if it is under "self-promo""

No, he's not. Specifically because it's under "self-promo".

And, as with so many complaints about things other people write, you don't have to read it. How is this a problem, for you?

Lesley | 124 comments I'm sure Joe is very grateful to Melodie for helping in his promotion by drawing attention to the post for those who may otherwise have missed it.

First rule of marketing - get it noticed; second rule - have others do your 'word of mouth' marketing (the most effective). Success to Joe!

The Self Promotion folder was put in place specifically so authors (and book distributors) could have a place to market their books, without spamming the rest of the group. If it doesn't interest you, then just avoid the self-promotion folder.

FWIW, it's not just you. I now just clear everything in the self promo folder without looking at it - except to add names to my "never read/buy" list.

Thanks, Jennifer. Self-promo is one thing, beating it to death is another. There are some authors on here who self-promote on the self-promo threads and also join in some of our other threads. Off the top of my head, I can think of Tracy Weber, Mary Ellen Hughes and Beth Groundwater. I've tried books from all of them, because I don't get the feeling I'm being looked at as nothing more than my wallet. Note to self, be sure and put the other type of self-promoter on the "would read the phone book first" list.

message 126: by James (new)

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 33 comments Personally, I don't think that necessary promotional efforts have anything to do with the quality of the novels. And I'm more concerned with the quality of what I read.

But others can, of course, use other methods to determine what is worth reading.

You are, of course, absolutely right. There are a fair few authors in our group who are on my personal favorites list, and it isn't fair to them that they get tarred with the same brush if they post something in the Self-Promotions folder. But I'm not willing to wade through posts that I find as aggravating as telemarketing in order to find the gems - they all get ignored now.

My favourites don't have to worry about it anyway, as I buy all my books new and they're on my auto-buy list. I discover new, quality authors based on the opinions of my reading friends and reviews so ultimately I don't miss out. :)

I don't remember where in this group I saw the question about disappearing groups, so thought I would post an update seen in another group here and hope all those wondering would see it.

Sometime between last Thursday night and 4:00 am Friday, the J.D. Robb group inexplicably disappeared. I reported the problem around 6:00 am Friday but all of the Goodreads staff was off for the 4th of July holiday and no action was taken until their return on Monday. We got a response that afternoon that they were looking into the issue.

Turns out that there were other groups that disappeared as well and this appears to be a big issue. As of now (Wednesday, July 8, 6:00 pm), the group still hasn't been restored but the engineers are working to figure out how it happened, how to prevent future occurrences and how to restore our groups.

I know many of the members here are also members of that group. As we have no means to communicate with members, I'm posting a message here to keep you informed and bring you up to date.

I saw an update from Meghan today that indicates that they will be able restore all the missing groups, from which I infer the comments and threads will be restored as well. Some good news at least. Too bad they won't do anything to let everyone know.

Jennifer -- I hope all missing groups have been restored since last week. You'd think they could at least notify moderators of the affected groups, so they could then inform their group members.

Nope, not yet. There was a post this morning that they began restoring the groups today, but it would take several days before the restoration was complete - so some people might see some groups back faster than others.

I think Megan (GR support) eventually put together her own email and manually sent it out to all the moderators or the missing groups, but yeah, the communication should have been MUCH better.

I got the email that some groups were missing and being restored but couldn't check ours. I've been moving for the past 2 weeks into our new home and didn't have internet access. I know the feeling. When I moved three years ago, I heard many derogatory comments about my personal library and queries as to why I had all those books or didn't get rid of some. As if! ☺

Have fun settling into the new place!

Thanks, both of you.
I get to paint the family room Wed. So tomorrow I'll order the bookcases for (free) home delivery, which I'll then have to build. Hubby doesn't understand I can't just shove the books on the shelves either, but that they need to be sorted, so I can find them again later!

At the very least, my kitchen is starting to feel like mine now that I've unpacked the cookbooks! However, I had my Baker's Rack upstairs full before, plus two small bookcases in the basement of cookbooks. I've got more shelved on the Baker's Rack now but it looks like too much. lol Two places are two rows deep! So in our storage room down in the pantry I'll have to have a small bookcase for overflow cookbooks.

Cherie O'Boyle I would like to start a discussion thread asking about readers favorite independently published cozies. I'm looking for quality independently published mysteries to read and support. There is a discussion about him in the Moderator support group. It looks like he has been reported to GR Administration.
