PAST:

When the Cordyceps fungus emerged, the world broke out in chaos. The Planet Earth we knew had evaporated; a terrifying, blood strewn place crawling with the living dead taking its place. Minute by minute, hour by hour, The Infected grew stronger in numbers. Brother turned on Brother, Mother turned on daughter, and man turned on man. The streets of our Earth were streaked scarlet with blood.

In 2013, a catastrophe struck Planet Earth that would change the course of human history. The ophiocordyceps unilateralis fungus, a neuroparasite that spreads though airborne spores or bites and takes over the nervous system of its host, began to target humans. Referred to as the Cordyceps Brain Infection (CDI), the fungus seizes control of all brain functions while the host is still alive, erasing any sense of humanity they had.

Since then, the social order we once knew had become nothing more than a distant memory. Those who were clever and lucky enough to survive trekked to determined centers situated in the major cities located all around the planet; barred, heavily guarded safe havens created by the military. Once-magnificent metropolises had been transformed into quarantine zones, built to provide security to the survivors living inside and to keep the fungus from spreading. Strict, martial policies were enforced: curfews, rations, and numerous other prohibitions were implemented to reduce risk of contamination. Ever since The Epidemic, people have been turning up at checkpoints in hopes to receive protection from the undead on the other side of the bars.

As the years passed, The New York-based military pharmacologists attempted to find a cure. Soldiers guarding the city would drag those in the first stage of infection into the secret underground laboratories so the scientists could test their theories. Instead, they had accidentally mutated the original Cordyceps fungi into a much deadlier one— named Cordyceps Armatura. The new fungi created bigger, stronger, and deadlier creatures called Napad. What started out as an attempt to find a cure became something much, much more.

PRESENT:

It is now 2033; life in the New York encampment has progressed as much as it could under the martial government’s careful watch. The survivors are no longer constantly racked with the fear of being Changed. While the occasional shortage of food or a loud gunshot causes intermittent dispute, when citizens living in the quarantine zones start to mysteriously disappear, people begin to panic violently.

The Napad had made their way into the camps.

Alarmed and terrified, some flee to other quarantine zones located throughout the US, while the rest stay behind to aid the military in ridding the new threat. But with the Napad infecting more and more people each day, questions begin to arise about the military’s true intentions.

An idea is stirring underground; “There’s a pattern—nobody in the military forces has been infected. It’s got to be a ploy implemented by the government!” Some people are persuaded right away. Poorly orchestrated attacks span the major checkpoints of the city, spilling the blood of the uninfected. It only fuels the underground movement further—more attacks, more death. There is a choice to make: to fight for survival, or to fight for liberty. One question must be answered first: which monster is worse; the one created by Cordyceps, or the one that already exists within us?
