But the style is hard to define, there's no distinct way to draw the line or keep the Lost Generation in a box. But one thing that is repeated in all the characters is that they seem bored. Life is a game, but not an entertaining one. The boredom almost seems painful, unbearable. Before anyone commits to anything, anything that evokes great love or great achievement or great hate or great grief, they remove themselves. The people of this generation refuse to let their hearts commit to anything. It is an emotionless time; not heartless, just droll and aimless. When Brett said that the count was one of them now, it is like the count realized how dangerous it is to give into his heart. He loved Brett and tried to be devoted to her but when she started to drag him around town, he caught his mistake. He entered the Lost Generation, he crossed over with them. And from then on, I doubt that he will not be so careless.
