It's been fine today but yesterday did see a few repeated posts and notifications.

Not sure what is going on, says I now have 4 new things to look at, reckon the new one must be your reply Debbie. Thing maybe the notifications are working, they just ain't saying what the new posts are.
I have a question about nominations and voting. I wondered if anyone has considered making this period slightly longer? Currently we only have 2 days in which to nominate a book and get it seconded, which seems to result in fewer suggestions each month. Is there a reason why our nomination and voting period is particularly short?
We have normally done nomination from the 1st to the 3rd of the month and voting from close of polls to the 6th. Last month they were a little later as I was away at a funeral and Jo didn't have time until midway through the 1st.
I don't have a problem with making then 1st to the 4th and voting until the 8th

Completely agree, and if we are a bit late on the first, or it runs over a day, then we can simply extend by a day.
I was thinking oven longer than this....more like a week to nominate and second and then another week to vote. I'm usually around on a daily basis, so I get to nominate or second if there's anything I particularly like the look of, but this group does seem to have a very short nominating and voting period compared to others. Not that there is a right or wrong way to do things, I just thought having a slightly longer timeframe would give rise to more nominations and give everyone a longer chance to vote as well.
We have always done nominations and voting very early in the month as it gives people two or three weeks to acquire the book.
Perhaps in January we could run, 5 days for each and then see.

Thanks for answering Paul and Jo, I think it's important to have enough time to get hold of books too...though it's often hard to assess whether my library will have the book I need within a couple of days, or take a few weeks! I'm happy with whatever voting timeframe you go with, just thought it was worth considering :)
If its a tie for the classics read does that mean the woman in white will be the book for the following month, well not april as it would be post 1900, but may? Gets quite confusing! hehe
It does get confusing Charlotte. We have decided to run The Time Machine for March and The Woman in White for May, meaning that April will be post 1900 as normal.
Hello- just joined the group and was looking for some clarification on something. For the March books- what is the timeline? Are these books to be finished by March 1st ideally? Or are they to be read over the month of March? I apologize if this information is posted somewhere- I'm still poking around and figuring this group thing out :) Thank you!
Welcome Annie. Those are the group reads for March, but feel free to star and finish as and when you want to. The book shelf has all the dates when the books start and stop
Hello Annie, welcome to the Group! As Paul says, it's pretty flexible, so just come on over to one or more of the threads as and when. Sometimes we have read along threads, so not the voted monthly reads, and these can often run for a few months.
Is there a place where I can ask for Viper recommendations? Specifically, I am looking for good audio books that I can play during rest time for my kindergarten class. Preferably longer ones that we could listen to a bit of each day.
I can start a thread for that if you want Jacqueline, but for audio books there is this one here:

I'm sorry, I think that is down to me. Because Woman in White went through from an earlier month's poll, I missed it when setting up the May Polls in early April. Either Paul or I, whoever gets there first, will set them up.
Apologies.
Apologies.
The poetry thread is here Aaron:

We did have one on rants, but I think that a thread about social issues would become to emotive and heated.

I am currently reading "A Brief History..." and would like my activity to appear under the "What Members Thought" section of the group page for the book. I have the book on my "Currently Reading' shelf. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
There are two threads Kevin for you to comment in:

So I don't think I asked my earlier question correctly. When I go the group page for the book (in this case for "A Brief History...", I can see which members are Currently Reading, Going to Read, etc. However, my status for the book (now "Read") is not automatically appearing. Is there an additional shelf that I need to add for the Group in order for this to automatically happen.
BTW...I've only been a member for a few weeks and am very much enjoying it.
I never see myself in that section and thought that how it works, but I can't see you on the list either, so bang goes that theory.
Apologies for the delay, been out and about this afternoon. Do you mean this page Kevin:
https://www.goodreads.com/group/show_... ?
I don't know how you get onto that page, as I think it is something that Good reads controls, and not us. You might need to check that the book that you marked as read is linked to the main edition too.

My understanding, which could be completely wrong, is that the "currently reading" etc is what the group is supposed to be doing. I have all my personal reading under "My Books" and I can change the settings there.
This isn't a question, but an observation. On the nominations for July, the months are all mixed: June and July. The heading might be correct, but the other info has June. Or the other way around. Certainly I am capable of figuring it out, but just wanted to let you know. Thanks!
Jacqueline wrote: "Just curious, why is this group named the Book Vipers?"
Hello Jacqueline, it was named before my time, but I believe it relates to the fact that the group evolved from a UK online parenting forum called Mumsnet and the site can have a bit of a reputation for being "straight talking" and something of a nest of vipers!
Hence, the spin off to here of a book group became The Book Vipers.
But everyone here is very lovely, I promise!

I wasn't on Internet. Of course we all love you. We are all just used to your great humour. Or something.....Haha

By the way a Viper is a slang term for a drug addict or reefer addict. I guess Book Vipers are book addicts.

Are you not a book addict? :D
There is an option to edit a topic. We can change the subject, mark it as important and close the thread off.
I guess I missed something, but does fiction-read group now reads on book per two months? If that is so, date-started and date-finished on the bookshelf don't indicate that. I also couldn't find the list of books read this year in the corresponding topic - it ends on January. I've been away for quite some time and want to get back on track but now I'm confused... Sorry :(
