The question to think about is:

"We're pieces on a gameboard, Dr. March, and some of us are more powerful than others."

Referring to the quote from the book (above), to what extent to you agree with this statement?

Are the characters in this book simply pieces on a gameboard, holding varying degrees of power but remaining ultimately powerless in the face of their own destinies?

Or are they the chessplayers?
