I've done that. It doesn't always make a huge difference to the list since there are a very large number of people who are still allowed to add books.

why is that?

It is only for lists that are, basically, a fixed set of books. And it isn't totally effective. Any librarian can still mess with the list.

I suppose because librarians are the people who fix most problems on Goodreads. Completely locking a listopia would probably require staff input to unlock it which would probably get very annoying for the staff.

Sophie (notemily) | 469 comments Can any librarian freeze a list? I have a couple with fixed sets of books.

No, only super-librarians may lock a list.

Lobstergirl A static list means that people cannot vote on the list in the normal way (the vote buttons are gone). The only thing you can do to the list is to click on the "get results" button at the bottom, correct? And that button tells you how many of the books on the list you have read, and then it compares your results to your friends who have also clicked "get results." But you cannot vote on the list in the normal way.

message 11: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (notemily) | 469 comments That's weird. That seems like a "challenge" rather than a list.

message 12: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Precisely, a static list becomes a challenge.

For a lot of lists that would be exactly what is needed otherwise voting might alter the sequence of books. Like the one in this thread. Generally, if the list creator says 'static' and the list description agrees then static is probably OK.

If a list is de-staticed(?) do the votes come back?

message 14: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I don't know. If a list I voted on becomes static, I delete my entire vote because then the list becomes useless to me. The way I use Listopia is I constantly update my list votes. If I voted on "Novels set in France" then I want to be able to add the novel I just read set in France to it. I don't want my vote to be forever frozen so that only the novels I read prior to 2011 set in France are on it.

Okay, that's a bad example, but let's say it's "Time Magazine's 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century." You might think it would be logical to make that a static list, since there are only 100 novels and they never change. But the books on the list that I as a reader have read and will read, that changes. So the list becomes useless to me. And I delete my vote.

That makes perfect sense to me. I'd probably do the same. Shame there is no easy way to clone a list so someone could make their own personal copy.

message 16: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (notemily) | 469 comments I feel like frozen lists should be in their own category, if they are really "challenges" and not lists. And I do think there should be a way to freeze a list partially, so that you can still vote on it but not add books to it, like the Time Magazine one. That way you could change your votes as you read more of the books on the list.

Tytti | 173 comments Also it would be nice to have a list that you can make and still be able to vote yourself. It shouldn't automatically put them in order but every book should start with 0 points. Like I thought about doing another "100 books you should read" but it was in an alphapetical order so giving the first 100 points and the last book only one didn't seem fair to me. And as I said I wouldn't be able to vote on it based on my personal opinions. (Coming from a small country and speaking a rare language makes it difficult to get any "bigger" lists based on members' votes so pre-made lists would be useful.)

I believe only superlibrarians can make a list static.
