Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments I remember there are a few in the series but I only read the first, It's about a priest who is the best of his order who gets seduced by dark magic and turns away from the order and raises an army.
The story is about a younger priest that is sent out to try and save their (best and brightest) and how he walks into all this chaos and corruption his "elder" is creating, I remember blood drinking, slaughter I think the priest was becoming a "dark god" and the other almost has him change back to "good" at the end but he does not succeed.
The cover is what I remember the most and I did chase it down and had to order an out of print novel and have it shipped... but lent it out and never got it back, I remember searching for months and finally seeing the novel cover : Shows a priest (in white) with a wicked curved knife about to stab a girl (sacrifice) on a alter, I think this was a final sacrifice and he would be a god. The book is really dark I remember the disturbed feeling I got when reading it, just cant find it again.
If anybody has some idea's please share'

Aerulan | 1317 comments When you say 'old' what's your time frame for that? I mean, do you think of 20 years as being old or 50 or 5? There is a wide age range of folks in this group and 'old' can mean different things to different people. If you can say you read the book x years ago and/or you think it was about ___ old then, or you think it was published before y date that'll help narrow down a lot of possibilities.

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments I think it was 84'- 86... but I seem to think once I found it again it was more into the 90's, my memory is not what it was.
I just looked through all bank records trying to find it from account purchase, and spent hours for last few days, I swear it exists!
Cover is not by Frazetta I looked through all his prints.

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments Also If I remember correctly, The elder "priest", monk whatever I cant recall, He was like a saint and turned dark and I think the sacrifices where to be accomplished in a time-frame like an eclipse, end of novel he has a choice (after the young priest found him) all through the book its hard to believe that such a good, great man could have turned so evil, your always left thinking he just might turn back. Thats what I think the art-work on the cover is, final choice'
But as Im thinking I'm not sure if he was becoming a "god" or setting one free.

Chelsea (chelseanorma) | 5 comments The Monk by William H. Hallahan The Monk by William Hallahan. I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but is a book from 1983 and details with satanic rituals and a young monk (from what I could tell). The cover doesn't match your description but the story sounds close Synopsis I found reads "Satan and his followers, pursued by their adversary, the angel Timothy, attempt to destroy Brendan Davitt, a young man born in Ireland and blessed by God"

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments This is a modern tale, The book I am looking for is set in "sword and sorcery" I should have mentioned this, Thank you so much for trying, I spent last night going through all my fantasy art books and on-line Frazetta, Boris and julie bell art work... has to be one of these artist's the cover is amazing.
I do remember seeing that there was a few follow up novels and I believe a popular author.
I have and am spending hours of my day trying to find this novel, so really appreciate any help.

-mentioned since it's not as obvious as it could be.

Could it be a Hildebrant cover? The Art of the Brothers Hildebrandt

message 11: by Jack (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments It is in that similar style, but didn't find the cover.
It does give me an idea, I think I will go to bookstore and sit and look through every art-book they have, I really thought I would have found it by now, or somebody had read it... its going to turn out to be like looking all over for your keys for an hour then realize they where in your pocket'
again I thank everyone and anyone that is trying to help'

Lou Rocama | 457 comments That series showed up in the thrift store again; based on the covers, it's not a match, alas. Just on the off chance tho:
Lord Of No Time by Louise Cooper The Initiate (Time Master, #1) by Louise Cooper The Outcast (Time Master, #2) by Louise Cooper The Master (Time Master, #3) by Louise Cooper

Michele | 2488 comments Do you remember how you knew it was a series? And was the series all about the same character, or were they just set in the same world?

I wonder if it might be something by R.A. Salvatore. His books often have that sort of high fantasy cover, for example these.

message 15: by Jack (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments Ack' I had finally let this go, now im stuck on trying to find it again... yes the art-work on the cover is similar to the style I remember the curved knife with the guy standing or kneeling over the girl on an altar, If I remember right it was like a final test since he left the "good"order he had done many atrocities and had like a few and he was done. Went from being the for the greatest good to becoming just the opposite.
It had more books set in this world but I dont think there was any following like a trilogy, but I could be wrong.
I remodeled a guys house that referred my work to a gentleman who I out in a new bathroom that "borrowed" the book , I am trying to contact the first guy to see if he can call the second lol Now I have to find this novel I remember it being very disturbing , granted this was many years ago when I first read it but the journey the second "monk" undertook and what he kept finding in the aftermath of his teacher gone bad was very memorable to me, one of my first journeys into "dark fantasy"
that is how I found it the second time was by the artwork.

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments I just remembered there was something about an eclipse, he had to perform so many sacrifices before the eclipse and I think at the very end he chose to ...wait no we dont know if he would have chose to remain good and repent, I think that was kind-of the kicker'

Sally (sastevens) | 46 comments I tried doing a tag mash for this and this trilogy kept popping up, Black Sun Rising by C. S. Friedman is the first one. The description sounds similar.

message 19: by Jack (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments Ya I have read that series... well the first and second.
I have been searching through picture after picture of book covers and typing in key word's.... I so want this book again now!!
I do remember a few more things, one the writing has recognizable names and peoples: example elric's Melnibonéans from Micheal Moorcock's series, I am so close to remembering main characters name, well there are 2 the one sent after him, but the story is the priest was a great man ,healer did everything and was truly loved everywhere... but then his family dies (I think a disease) and he cant save them so he rages against "god" and with all the sacrifices and atrocities he does this to make his body strong enough to allow the dark god into his body and his reward will be to be able to forget... I almost had it!!!
Maybe someone will read this and just know, but he goes from healing the sick and helping the poor to destroying villages and heads on poles and all very Machiavellian. SIGH*

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments Lost this thread for a few days... I did end up finally finding cover art, was so small it only showed half the picture, artist is Luis Royo I did find a larger pic here is link: http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/Bz-toNLla3o/hq...
I seen some old david gemmell books art covers and knew it had to be same artist but still cannot find the book, On the cover shows the man "priest"I was speaking of , demon he was calling... I think I remember the ending kind of like "Apocalypse Now" ending where the younger guy sent to save or stop him same as in movie. Now if I could just change cover into book. last I read it was in 2007-2009 so really not that long ago but no idea of when it was published, probably 80's

Some artists have websites that show their art and tell what it has been used for...

Cumbling Michael (CumblingMichael) | 165 comments Hiya.

Might have something to do with Mark E Rogers' series Zorachus, and (more pertinently) its sequel, The Nightmare of God. The copy in the Goodreads reference doesn't have the same cover art as yours, but here's a link to a version that does: http://ca.pbsstatic.com/l/48/0248/978...

Cheers

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments Thats IT!!! How did you find it, I looked everywhere , as soon as you said Zorachus it all fit, I remember being so excited when I last found it and this same excitement and now trepidation on if the novel has the same effect and enjoyment for me as the first time... first need to see if I can get a copy then the read.
But Thank You I would have finally dismissed it until next time I thought of it then went through all the searching again, I looked through so much art-work trying to find the cover picture. Yes! Thats the Book!

message 26: by Michele (new)

Michele | 2488 comments Huzzah, victory is ours!!!! So is this a series? Should one read Zorachus first, or does it matter?

message 27: by Jack (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments I didn't , I started with (the Nightmare)and It was just wickedly fun, I knew there was a back-story and others after but there is only so much one should read of such thing's lol I make it sound so ominous'
It really is a disturbing novel one with open torture not just of the flesh but of a pious man who is pushed into a decision and follows it with the same abandonment and dedication as when he was working for the greater good of mankind.
I never read the first (Zorachus) I probably will order the series this time, but I remember the vividness of the created world takes you places you sometimes just didn't want to go... or really should not.
Its a dark novel. i would say (from reading some review's) if interested get them all , I will be.

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments Well Thanks again, i will get both as research on them tells me I missed out on the first novel so I have these reads to look forward to, and can stop looking through pages and pages of art-work... really gets old after awhile.
looking forward to the read, without the help?? who know's

Which one should we shelve, Jack, Zorachus or The Nightmare of God?

message 32: by Jack (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments I would start with the first (Zorachus) as this describes the start of his fall from who he was, sort of like the old karate movie with the monk who is all for peace but always seems to get in fight's, he never kills anyone but this is not his story, this is about a man with same belief's but with a demon or "god" whispering in his ear, and what better servant to have than one who was at the start against you in every way thought and action and to slowly draw him over to your side, I remember its a dark book and from what Ive read the first is the same way.

I will look for identify covers group that sounds fun, and if it's a fantasy novel I have recently looked at enough covers'

I see what you are talking about now (shelve) I would have put The nightmare of god instead its more of a finish even though its in a trilogy, give people more of a chance to experience it, some might be a little shaken on the first and not read the 2nd, like I said I just read the 2nd , im sure the first is good but I know the 2nd is great'

Jack (Pernicious) | 22 comments I dont know where to post ... I have one other novel I have been trying to find. Again only remember the cover art but no luck in finding it.
The cover has what really looks like Rob Lowe holding 2 uzi's and he is running from a building on fire: the novel I thought was tenkiller or similar.
Story is "rob" was a delta seal or CIA op, he found (cell's) of terrorist's and broke them up, he retires but "they" find him and kill his family but he escapes and starts glode trotting all over from cell to cell killing "bad-guy's) has a thing about going in with mostly nothing and using the weapons of the bad-guys he killed getting info from one then off to follow the intell, Gov. is after him, terrorist are in hiding and after him, really fast paced novel. Really looks like Rob Lowe on the cover though.
sixkiller, tenkiller something native american I think

Jack, you need to start a new thread since you're looking for a different book. In the dropdown box, choose "Unsolved" folder.
