Dottie (oxymoronid) | 698 comments I've not only been reading lately but reviving another pastime which I enjoyed doing over the years but haven't done for two decades or so -- crocheting.

Today was WWKIP Day -- World Wide Knit in Public Day according to some and so I took my crochet project along and Husband and I sat having coffee -- I crocheted and he read some more in his Dutch book (he's around three-quarters of the way through it now).

Kristel will recognize this classic, I'm sure. I have it in Ennglish and will likely read the two side by side one day to get a feel of the Dutch but move along better by using the translation.

Anyway -- I'm trying posting a photo in a post for the very first time here -- hope I can get it done correctly without a million attempts.

Hmm -- maybe not. Back in a moment.

This link works but it isn't what I was aiming to do. I'll have to practice some or ask questions. Ah well -- I'm good for the time being -- just so the pic is visible.

That's fun, Dottie. I saw a different one you did on Facebook, too. Well done!

Kristel | 165 comments Dottie, what is he reading?

Knitting and crocheting rulez! I wish I had more time to knit

Dottie (oxymoronid) | 698 comments It's Het verdriet van België roman, Kristel. He's been reading it for a long time. He is keeping his Dutch sharp -- looking up words, etc. He has more time to read it now than he did for a long w hile when he was still working. Semi-retirement does have its good points. ;)

Kristel | 165 comments Impressive Dottie, That's one of our great novels. I had to read it in high school and thus it never has been one of my favorites, but Hugo Claus was a good writer, may he rest in peace. I'm assuming that your husband knows a fair bit of Dutch then :)

Dottie (oxymoronid) | 698 comments Kristel -- he became very fluent in Dutch while we were there while I fell away on the lessons and behind on my progress though I was doing very nicely for a while. He has kept it in practice by reading novels in Dutch as well as reading the Belgian/Dutch newspaper websites and he has even communicated with a couple of the columnists by e-mail when they were addressing topics such as the huge wildfires here in CA.

Kristel | 165 comments Dottie to me that's quite impressive, learning Dutch but also maintaining it while you don't need it anymore. I've known American expats in Antwerp, working for over 20 years in Antwerp and not even trying to say Dank u. On the other hand, Dutch isn't an easy language to master, so congrats :)
