Lori Hollywood's 10 Top-Earning Actors

1. Harrison Ford
2. Adam Sandler
3. Will Smith
4. Eddie Murphy
5. Nicolas Cage
6. Tom Hanks
7. Tom Cruise
8. Jim Carrey
9. Brad Pitt
10. Will Ferrell

What? Eddie Murphy is #4? Adam Sandler is #2?

message 2: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Brad Pitt... sucks.

Tom Hanks > everyone else on the list.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments Harrison Ford's okay, and I like Tom Hanks. Um...

message 4: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Yes, Harrison Ford is definitely up there.

I'll rephrase what I said:

Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford > everyone else on the list.

message 5: by Lori (new)

Lori Yeah I really don't get that list!

Brad Pitt sometimes deliver a nuanced performance, I don't think he's horrible, but not a great actor for sure. I also think Crowe delivers some good performances - better than Pitt.

Daniel Day Lewis is a master. Who are some others you can think of?

message 6: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Over what time period?

message 7: by Lori (new)

Lori Ooooh, let's go for all, Dave!

message 8: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell I mean are they the top earners of all time or just this year? If all time, do they adjust for inflation?

message 9: by Lori (new)

Lori Oh, just this past year, Dave. And Ford is on it just because of Indiana Jones, he was paid something like 65 Million to entice him back.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments Kevin Spacey, Robert Downey Jr., Greg Kinnear, John Cusack, Josh Brolin, Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Dustin Hoffman...

But people don't go to the movies for good acting, they go for something that sounds fun. Or exciting. Or scary.
And good actors don't always pick the movies that interest movie-goers.

message 11: by Lori (new)

Lori Gotta add Pacino, and the old DeNiro.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments Hoo-haw!

message 13: by Lori (new)

Lori What? You talkin to me? YOU TALKIN TO ME?!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments Say hello to my little friend!

message 15: by Jessica (last edited Jun 14, 2009 05:54PM) (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) I thought Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie were some of the top earners--is this a male-only list?

message 16: by Lori (new)

Lori Yes, Jessica.

Is Julia still a top-earner? I wonder how Sandra Bullock fares these days, didn't she used to be a top-earner as well? Probably Cameron Diaz is high on the list these days.

message 17: by Jessica (last edited Jun 14, 2009 06:37PM) (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) who I think should be on th top 10 earning list (in no real order):

Sean Penn
Javier Bardem
Kate Winslet
Cate Blanchett
Daniel Day Lewis
Johnny Depp
Viggo Mortensen
Daniel Craig
Scarlett Johnassen (yes, why not)
Penelope Cruz
Gael Garcia Bernal
hell, I'll just end on the Latins ;-)

message 18: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) and I see I went over 10
oh well--

message 19: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Sean Penn?!

Scarlett Johansson?!

I agree with the Latins... but... NOT SCARLETT JOHANSSON AND SEAN PENN.

Sean Penn is a twat of the highest degree.

message 20: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) A twat?

message 21: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) oh I disagree Matt about Sean.
well he may be a twat
but I think he's a v good actor

message 22: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) They are not mutually exclusive, after all.

message 23: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Heh.

message 24: by Lori (new)

Lori I agree with Jessica about Sean Penn, he is a great actor, even if he's an asswipe. A twat? Uh, I always thought that referred to female genitalia. Clearly the definition has moved on!

And I'd add Helen Mirren and Meryl to Jessica's list.

message 25: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Lori, likening a man to female genitalia is certainly not a new thing:

"He's such a pussy."

"Jesus, that guy is such a twat!"

etc, etc, etc.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Matt Damon

message 27: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) oh yes, Mirren! Streep!

in Britain, they do call men cunts
just saying--

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments Sean Penn is a great actor. I will stop there...

message 30: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "Sean Penn is a great actor. I will stop there..."

No argument from me on that.

message 31: by Matthieu (last edited Jun 14, 2009 07:32PM) (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments I call 'em both cunts, Jessica. Having a British mother helps with such things.

Matt Damon?! AHHH, I have to leave this thread!

If someone says Ben Affleck... I'll... do something horrific to an innocent bystander!

message 32: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Well ....

message 33: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) I'm with you on those last 2 Matt!

message 34: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I've always though Matt was better than Ben -- but neither is a spectacular actor. Affleck puts me to sleep.

message 35: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) yeah I was just going to amend my remarks to say that Damon is a decent actor while Affleck...ugh.

message 36: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments No! He's not anything close to decent! Ahh!

message 37: by Félix (last edited Jun 14, 2009 07:51PM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) The Authority has spoken.

message 38: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Kate Blanchett seems to be in every other movie that comes out--and she's great in all of them!

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Jessica wrote: "yeah I was just going to amend my remarks to say that Damon is a decent actor while Affleck...ugh."

I agree

message 40: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) Matt wrote: "No! He's not anything close to decent! Ahh!"

He seems to play the same type a lot.
I was really disappointed in him in Ripley.

you know I should have added:
Philip Seymour Hoffman to the list...

message 41: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yes on Hoffman!

message 42: by Lori (new)

Lori Dustin!

message 43: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I don't know about top earning actors, but these should be added to the all-time best actors list, IMHO:

Anthony Hopkins
Sam Elliott
Morgan Freeman
Judy Dench
Tommy Lee Jones
Will Smith
Donald Sutherland (Kelly's Heroes!)
Clint Eastwood
Stockard Channing
Jack Nicholson
George Clooney
Charlize Theron
Christopher Walken
Emma Thompson

and even though they are no longer with us...
Katherine Hepburn
Cary Grant
Jimmy Stewart
Audrey Hepburn
Heath Ledger
Charlie Chaplin
Spencer Tracey

message 44: by Richard (last edited Jun 15, 2009 01:12AM) (new)

Richard | 347 comments Some of my favourite actors are animals: Steven Seagull, Dolphin Lundgren, Sylvester Stallion (aka Rambi) and Bruce Eel.

Just so you know. Please continue.

EDIT: Oops. I forgot Jean-Claude van Clam, The Mussels from Brussels.

message 45: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments I am so tempted to add Ben Affleck, if only to see what will happen next....

message 46: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Do it, Nools! Just to tempt the Fates... mwahahahahaha!

message 47: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments You are incredibly annoying, Sherrie.

message 48: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Fiiiiggghhhhhhhhhtttttt!

Three points:

1. Tom Hanks, in my eyes, is terribly overrated.
2. Sean Penn is a, well, what Matthew called him. And I think he's an overrated actor, too. He overacts. People like him because of the roles he takes on, I think.
3. I have a really hard time thinking of an actor I like. Johnny Depp? He's always interesting. But I find I like actors less because of their abilities and more because of what they choose to do. I also have a hard time with actors who seem like assholes in real life...even if they're good at their craft, they bug me. George Clooney seems like a shallow male airhead...when he talks about politics he makes Sharon Stone and Heather Graham (sp?) sound intelligent. So I have a hard time watching his films.

Actresses...I guess I'm the same way, if I can separate looks/personality from the picture.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments I thought Sean Penn overacted in Mystic River (which I didn't like), but was perfect in Milk.

I like Tom Hanks because he doesn't seem too full of himself, but will take smaller roles just because they look fun. Like the FBI guy he played in Catch Me If You Can. I did think parts of Castaway were ludicrous, though.

I disagree on Mystic River, agree on Milk.

"I did think parts of Castaway were ludicrous, though."

Which parts?
