Taja (taozi) Hey guys,

I always wondered about people and how they are with their books. I've seen some who are obsessed about the pristine condition of the books they own; they never dog-eared the pages, always fussed if a single mark or scratch was on a book and so on.
But then again, I've also seen some who's books were yellow, a little worn out and crumpled.

-Which one are you? Are you finnicky about your books? Do you not mind dog-earing the pages? How angry are you, if a friend, who borrowed your books, somehow manages to leave a mark? I'm curious, because I've met both kinds of people and it's so interesting how it depends on someone's personality and other aspects as well ...

I personally like my books with a little spirit. You can always tell which ones are my favourites because they're a little worn out. My Harry Potter collection in hardback is covered in bumps, the spines on two of them are half separated from the book and taped back with selotape, and they are all dog eared on at least three pages. It's because I had them since I was little and I took them with me everywhere. To the playground, when they managed to fall in the dirt. On the plain ride to Switzerland, when I was visiting my aunt. I even took them to school. But I prefere them over any other book and if you held them in your hands you'd be able to tell.
Another copy I love is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, not because the book is one of my favourites but because I managed to soak it in saltwater on my last holiday at the seashore. It looks amazing now. The pages are wavy and it smells like the sea and whenever I pull it out of my bookshelf, I am reminded of that time ...

I've watched a couple of booktubers and all of their books were pristine, and organized and it looked like they prefered shiny hardbacks and it always intrigued me how different we all are about the books we own. What are you guys like? :)

I'm a combination I think. Generally, I don't dog ear my books or break the spine, but they don't all look new either. I READ my books, so a little wear and tear happens.

If I lent a book to a friend and it came back with a mark, or dog eared, or the spine all broken I wouldn't be mad. First of all, I don't lend out my favorite books to anyone but my Mom, and she would never get a mark on my books! So if I lend a friend a book, I really don't expect to see it come back perfectly, or sometimes, even at all!

My kids are horrible on my books. They don't mean to be, but by the time three teenagers get done with a book, its spent days being thrown around in lockers, and backpacks, and the kids' rooms--it just happens! But if my kids are reading, that is the main thing!

So I guess the short answer is I take good care of my books, and like them to look newish, but I like the charm of a well loved book as well!

I guess I'm like Jenny. I love to have nice looking books and never dog ear pages, or break spines. I take really good care of my hardbacks. But, I have read a few books to death! Covers have fallen off, pages start falling out. With the ease of ebooks came not needing to reread my books as much because I can afford new books now and I don't have to wait to get to a book store like in the old days. When I was poor, I'd just reread all my books and some WAY more than others.

I lend books only if I know I can afford to go buy another to replace it. I can only handle so long for a book to be off my shelf. ;-)

If a book is precious to me (like a signed copy) I'm very careful about not opening it too big and handle it with extreme care. No one touches my signed copies but me!

I reread all my faves over and over. I have actually gone through 3 paperback copies of Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and I've gone through 2 paperback copies of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett . Also all my Laura Ingalls Wilder books--the paperbacks disintegrated a long time ago! I have bought a few of them in hardcover, but I no longer own all of them. :( Also my paperback copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury fell apart--recently bought it again in hardcover.

-RininTa- (rinz) I think I'm like Jenny also. I always mark my books with bookmarks, careful when open it, and never writes something on the pages. I like my book looks new but it never looks so new. Some of my books wrinkle at the edge because I open the pages often or my hands are wet.

I rare lend my book to my friends. If I want to lend it than I will tell them not to this or that and I have to accept the consequence if the book is a little bit far from the first condition.

One thing that I hate is if I bought a book, they stick the sticker price on the book and if I try to take it off, it leaves mark on my book!

RininTa, Jen has a video that explains how to remove those atrocious stickers from books!!

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 295 comments Signed copies I protect with as much care as possible in a house with 2 boy children... but half my books ('real' books) are purchased from Half Price Books, anyway. Often from the $1 Sale rack, so... wear and tear doesn't bug me too much...

Dre (drewolf) | 266 comments Right now, all my new books still look like new books. I buy the physical copy, then read the virtual copy. I protect them with book laminates, and plastic cover for hardcovers. My signed books are not to be touched be anyone else, because I'd freak if it's damaged in any way. But before the digital age, my books become dog-eared, but I use bookmarks and don't fold corners to mark my page. As for stickers, I don't mind them. I just leave them be.

Angela(demonsangel) Fitzgerald (demonsangel) | 74 comments Dre, you sound like me. I keep all hardcover series and all signed books by authors wrapped up and locked in a huge safe. I know this way I don't have to tell people no you can't borrow or stop! please don't touch those. I have book shelves but they have old paperback books on it. Books I may have had since I was a teenager and my daughter's books. Wich, I bought and are all nice series. When I know that I'm going to be getting a signed book, I always ask the author not to put my name on it, just sign it or if they have a saying they use to put that and sign. I don't want my name on the book to ruin the value. I know most people want their name on the book but I'm thinking ahead. I know one day my daughter will get all my books. There's one sad thing about that though, she's going to have a lot of the same books. I have bought her all off the Hollows by Kim Harrison and I have my set but mine are all signed. I know we have a few more series that are like that. I try really hard to get my books signed but not hers. I also read hers while mine are locked away. LOL
