What's the first independent reading book you've read this school year, and what's the second or a subsequent independent reading book you've read this school year?

Which book would you recommend to others as being a better, more interesting, read, and why?

Provide three clear reasons why you would select one book you've read over another.

Charles Raben | 28 comments The first book I read this school year was The Pact.

The second book I read this read was IraqiGirl: Diary of a Teenage Girl in Iraq.

I found The Pact to be a much better book. It was so much more engaging. I found that in Iraqi Girl, I was bothered by the way the book had been formatted. The reason I read Iraqi Girl was because I wanted to try something new. Iraqi Girl is written as if it were a notebook; someone's diary. The Pact tells the story of three boys. In The Pact, these three boys go through much hardship. No matter what happens to them, they stay strong. There are points in the book where you think they will all give up, but in the end, they all prevail. Don't get me wrong, Iraqi Girl is an interesting book. I just find that the author did not do a good job of channeling a feeling of empathy through the book.

Miriam | 20 comments 1: Romeo and Juliet 2:Hide and Seek

hide and seek is what i rather recommended that kids my age read cause most of the time kids get tiered of reading Shakespeare and like a little more interesting and modern so kids can understand it better.

another reason why i think hide and seek is a better book to read is cause it is better story line to follow it is easier to follow than shakespeare.

the last reason why i think hide and seek is a better book for someone to read is cause your mind gets more engaged into the story it makes you want to read it but shakespeare the language is different so it gives your mind more work to do.

Emmanuelthomas | 18 comments The first book I read this year was the unwanteds and the second book I read was cirque de freak. Out of the two I would maybe recommend the unwanteds because in my opinion it's story is a little more creative I would also recommend the other book to because its kinda a roller coster ride but I would maybe read the unwanteds first.

Emily | 21 comments 1.) Tay-Sachs DiseaseThe Still Point of the Turning World, by Emily Rapp.

I would recommend the first book that I read because I think that it's easier to read, see the words, and the pictures. I think that if you learn more about Tay-Sachs disease from this book, you will be less uncomfortable and sad. Later, it would be sad like you expected it to be. There's nothing to get upset about. It's just a normal book about a genetic degenerative disorder named Tay-Sachs disease.

Freddy Ventura | 13 comments The first book I read was The Lord of the rings. The third book was lebronsdream team. To be honest I would recommend lebronsdream dream team because its more of a documentary based kinda book rather than lord of the rings were its more fairy tails and I'm not really a fan of that kind of genre. Lebronsdream dream team is a perfect book for basketball fans especially lebronsdream fan. It talk about his child hood living in Ohio and how he stared at the bottom and rose to the top defiantly a good book I recommend

Nicolas R. | 22 comments The first book I read for this semester was Gullivers Fugitives and the second book was Dark Mirror. I would recommend Dark Mirror as the better book. One reason is the storytelling. Duane makes you feel very interested in what will happen in the story. Another reason is the story itself. The mirror universe has been a great way to tell stories in the franchise and it is here too. The final reason is that Dark Mirror is a longer than Gulliver's Fugitives, so it has more to expierence. Though for fans of something like Fahrenheit 451 and Dystopia novels, I would definitely recommend Gulliver's fugitives

David | 6 comments The first book I read was the enemy. I enjoyed it a lot.i do not remember the seconded book I read I do know I did not enjoy it.
A book I would recommend is the enemy because it keeps you wanting to read more. I would select this book over pop because it's story line is more exciting than pop. My seconded reason being you can learn on what to do and not to do in case a zombie out brake ever occurs . My third reasons being that anyone will enjoy reading this book thanks to its simple but interesting plot.

Erica | 7 comments The first book that I read was Fahrenheit 451.I enjoyed it starting at the middle and from the end because it was very interesting but in the beginning it was kind of boring to me. The second book that I have read is Heaven is For Real, which was an amazing book while I was reading it because it was so interesting that I felt like I was in the book myself. The book that I would recommended other readers to read is the book Heaven is for Real because it's not only an interesting book, it's an inspirational book to read and it would dedicate a lot of things to you. Also it would give you answers about Heaven that you have been wanting to know for the rest of your life.

Chelsea | 9 comments The first book I read this year is, Are You there, God? It's Me, Margaret. The second book I read this year is The Unwritten Rule.

Of the two books, I would recommend The Unwritten Rule more for people who like to read drama. Both books are really realistic, but The Unwritten Rule is more for teenagers because it is based on high school students who have many problems. Another reason I like it better is the problems in the Unwritten Rule book happen to kids like me every day. The third reason I would recommend it is it teaches you to always follow your heart and take chances.

Nicolas R. | 22 comments The first independent reading book I read this year was Gullivers Fugitives the second book was Dark Mirror. I have to recommend Dark Mirror to read over Gulliver's Fugitives, mostly because it is a more serious story. Both of these books show two some of the different sides to Star Trek. Gulliver's Fugitives shows the more outlandish side of Star Trek and the big messages. While Dark Mirror shows the more serious side to the series. It is less outlandish in it's delivery and is more dramatic and frightening. I would also say that Dark Mirror is more of a character piece than Gulliver's Fugitives. We get to see the effect the events of the book have on the character's minds. We got this in Gulliver's Fugitives, but it is both more prominent and captivating in Dark Mirror. Finally it is also more of a treat for fans of the series. While Gulliver's Fugitives had references to previous stories and characters, Dark Mirror's entire premise is a continuation of one used in the original series, the mirror universe. Most fans will get more of a kick out of this then Gulliver's Travels, though I do enjoy both.
