I encountered someone else recently searching for a short story about a man searching a beach for black discs. While I do not yet know what the short story is, the searcher gave me a few more pieces of information:
-The man searches the beach with his wife
-He finds one black disc, polishes it, and has it appraised for a high value
-His grandfather once told him a story about how pirates always put more than one treasure in the same location
-This leads him to continue searching the beach for more black discs

Saucer of loneliness is a short story, not a collection. Amy's description definitely isn't it. Oh well....
