SOLVED. Writer finds mystery in old abbey? [s]

I read a book in late 2007 or early 2008 about a female writer who comes across a mystery about some people from World War One England while visiting an abbey (or old house, but I think abbey). There was a bit of romance. A male character from the past is an Englishman who had a terrible experience while stationed in Egypt.

What time period is the story set in?

The main character is modern, in the 2000s. She visits the abbey go have a secluded place to write and/or vacation.

I thought it might be The Cairo Diary by Maxime Chattam, but the heroine is a clerical employee at a Paris morgue - visiting a monastery in Mont-Saint-Michel, France.
