Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2274 comments Very helpful and true as well. Lately I been reading two books at a time, one on kindle and one in paperback. However I am not much of a reader so usually when I say I'm going to read I get side tracked and do something else. Hopefully I can use some of these tips and assert myself to read more.

message 3: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Woodland | 65 comments My favourite reading time is when I get in to bed – on the bedside table are three or four books – novels, books I use for research etc so what ever mood I feel like at the time depends on the book that I pick up to read. I don’t have a problem remembering where I was up to the last time I picked up a particular book. Even when I travel I take a selection of books – paperback & Kindle – but I never take the books that I am currently reading at home! I don't know why . . .

Arabella Thorne (arabella_thornejunocom) | 354 comments I like having choices and it depends on what kind of day I've had. Sometimes you just want mind candy and sometimes you want tales with substance. So yes, I usually have a few books going at once!

message 5: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2274 comments Agreed Arabella! It's good to get the mind going with multiple books. I need a set schedule of the best time for me to read, that way I can enjoy more.

message 6: by G.G. (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 491 comments I don't have a problem reading more than one book at a time as long as
1- They are different genre.
2- The characters' names are different.
3- Different languages doesn't bother me.

message 7: by Yzabel (new)

Yzabel Ginsberg (yzabelginsberg) | 262 comments I can keep tabs on 2-3 books at a time, but it works better when they're in different formats. Usually paperback for large books, academics, and whatever demands more focus on my part; and tablet/phone for "lighter" reading.

message 8: by Woolie (new)

Woolie Matthews | 12 comments I've been one to dabble in the novel juggling from time to time. I like authors differences, and as listed above the difference in character and plot as well.

My wife powers through ebooks at a rampant pace, but I like the slow page turning of a hard cover or a rampant rollercoaster page turning paperback. I generally have 2 on the go at any moment, and never the same author...that can be tricky. Unless the author isn't writing a series and books have no connection with one another.

I generally play it by feel. Some authors are action based run through at breakneck speed, so I may read them when I haven't much time, the more cerebral the fiction the more time I want to savour the unravelling.

message 9: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Fish | 43 comments I always have two books on the go - paperback for bedtime, Kindle for the commute. Most of the time I'm reading non-fiction, so the characters don't get jumbled up and sometimes you get some interesting juxtapositions between two subjects.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I like reading from paper, and I read two hours a night, mostly to unwind. Some find it strange and A.D.D.-like that I usually read a few pp. from 12-13 novels/short story compilations/journals a night. I have no problem remembering what's going on or where I've left off in each story. I only wish that worked for my writing, since I'm only able to write one story at a time!

message 11: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Fish | 43 comments I only write one story at a time, but it's funny how when you're writing one it generates ideas for others.

message 12: by Christine (new)

Christine Hayton (ccmhayton) | 324 comments I'm an avid reader and have had as many as 5 books on the go at one time. Right now I am reading 3 novels and they are all very different. A horror novel, a YA sci-fi novel, and a contemporary adult fiction. I read to enjoy - I love reading. Now I am writing, I need to understand different styles and paces and I find every book fascinating and usually a good resource for my own writing. Which one to read? Depends on my mood and what I'm going for; relaxation, research or maybe just a great story...

message 13: by Laura (new)

Laura Jardine (laurajardine) | 8 comments I can't remember the last time I read two books at once. I used to occasionally read one fiction and one non-fiction at a time, though I don't think I ever read two novels at the same time.

message 14: by Nihar (new)

Nihar Suthar (niharsuthar) | 383 comments I usually don't read multiple books at a time either...I find it's easier to just focus on one book. Guess it's just personal preference though! Have any authors here tried writing more than one book at a time though? haha!

Rodney Carlson (rodneycarlson) | 32 comments Absolutely! I have about five books at various stages. (Different muses visit me at different times) There is no chance of writers block, because I can walk away from one piece to work on another. I have a weekly word goal and it doesn’t matter where that gets applied.

My other job is computer consultant, so I am used to managing multiple project at once.

Chaos is great! What would life be like without juggling my work, family, online socializing, offline networking, online marketing , offline marketing, helping other writers, writing, and reading? All this progress keeps me enthused.

Maya Panika | 10 comments I usually start reading 2 or 3 but usually find one wins out over the others after a few chapters.

Always a good practice. I also have several books opened, because I never know what I might be in the mood to read.

Martyn Halm (amsterdamassassinseries) | 915 comments Lasher wrote: "I only wish that worked for my writing, since I'm only able to write one story at a time!"

My wife tends to say that women can multitask whereas men can't. Still I read several books simultaneously, while also writing a stand-alone book, and a short story, and the fourth book in my series, and my blog articles. All without losing track of what is what.

message 19: by Tia (new)

Tia (fatgirlfatbooks) I usually have at least two books going at any given time - usually one on my Kindle and one in hard copy in case the Kindle dies, I don't want to let it sit in the car, etc. Also, if I'm reading a particularly long or dense book (think Dune), I usually pad it with some lighter, fluffier novels to give my brain a break.

message 20: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (danielleleneedavis) | 34 comments The only time I've read two novels at once is when one is slow-moving or boring. That's when I pick up something else and start reading it. I may go back to the first when I finish the second. That may not actually be reading two at a time, now that I think of it. I tend to get engrossed in one at a time though.

message 21: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Knight | 218 comments I have been known to read several books at one time. I think of it as I would a serial TV show, like a Soap Opera. I wouldn't watch only that one show each day to keep from being confused by watching other shows in between. For me, it is the same with books. I can switch between the books as if I'm going from one show on TV to another. Each reading session is like one episode of the TV show.
If one of the books is really powerful, I may set the others aside just because I can't put that one down. I can't wait to see what will happen next.
I do try to give each book I'm reading at one time equal attention. If I can't hold to that discipline, the one I can't put down will probably get 5 stars.

message 22: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (danielleleneedavis) | 34 comments Brenda, I never looked at it that way. That's a perfect way to put it.

message 23: by Rodney (last edited Mar 20, 2014 08:47PM) (new)

Rodney Carlson (rodneycarlson) | 32 comments I read multiple books for different purposes.
1. For other authors.
2. Research on another book.
3. For my own enjoyment.

message 24: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell (neniacampbell) I have a problem with reading too many books at once. :P

message 25: by William (new)

William | 2 comments I am currently reading 5 books. One is a Christian help book, one is a baseball book, one is a "positive thinking book, and

message 26: by William (new)

William | 2 comments One is "Who's spying On You" and one is Power of Negative Thinking". What ever mood I'm in is what I read.

message 27: by Becky (new)

Becky Johnson | 31 comments I usually have about 4 or 5 books going at once. Good to know I am not alone in that. I usually get strange looks from people when I tell them I have 5 books going!

message 28: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Livingston (geoffliving) | 6 comments I am bad about this, I'll read several and complete none. Oy!

message 29: by Tsubaki (new)

Tsubaki (tsubakistar) | 7 comments Ahaha... I'd have to agree with the blog post. Granted, For physical books, I just leave whatever I start and haven't finished on my bedside table and they sit there until I get tired of staring at them and finish reading. Or give up.

I don't really have a routine for ebooks yet since I'm VERY new to the format and don't even own a reader. Regardless, since I'm into R&R for authors on Goodreads right now, my currently reading list is more like list of books I need to get through. And since I'm writing reviews as I go, I tend to just power through one book before picking up the next on the list.

(I do occasionally take breaks during long novels to do short stories though. I don't think a 2 hour-4 hour break is going to completely derail me.)

message 31: by Shirley (new)

Shirley McLain (shirleymclain) | 58 comments I usually read two books at a time but I have to admit I usually reading one at a much slower rate because I'm usually caught up in the story I have in my hand and want to finish it.

message 32: by Lenita (new)

Lenita Sheridan | 1010 comments I'm reading six books at the same time, but there's really just one book of those six on which I'm concentrated.

message 33: by Lenita (new)

Lenita Sheridan | 1010 comments I have a question for readers who are reading several books at a time. What motivates you to pick up a new one? What are your selection criteria?

message 34: by T.R. (new)

T.R. Winters | 12 comments Lenita wrote: "I have a question for readers who are reading several books at a time. What motivates you to pick up a new one? What are your selection criteria?"
I like everything I am reading at the same time to connect like a web. So if I was reading Gone With the Wind, anything about the old American South would probably get a look.

Emmaline MacBeath Lenita wrote: "I have a question for readers who are reading several books at a time. What motivates you to pick up a new one? What are your selection criteria?"

Honestly Lenita, I get bored! I often have a very short attention span so reading several books at once keeps me on my toes:-) I often read one adult, one children's, and one young adult at a time.

Nemetra X1369 | 24 comments Hi guys!
I am out and about, browsing Goodreads groups and discussions, searching for friends, seekers and readers of unusual books.
If anyone is interested in reading/reviewing my novel called Normal Weird, The Kindle version is free for the next 3 days. Hope you like it. It is close to my heart.

Shortly about the book:

Be prepared – there is nothing normal about this book. This is an inverted story of life, love and unlikely evolution.
The humanity of the 22nd century had to change… It was inevitable. Our progress created an irreversible evolutionary shift, challenging perceptions of what we consider normal and what we discern as weird. Does anyone truly know which is which?
What happens when a considered failure becomes an upgrade?...
‘CAPTIVATING, PROVOCATIVE, and intellectually INVIGORATING’.

message 37: by Gwen (new)

Gwen Chavarria | 5 comments I read several books at one time because most of what I read is nonfiction and I need to trade off from one to another to avoid boredom. I try to have a set of books going at any one time with as much variety as possible.

message 38: by Charles (new)

Charles Harris | 21 comments I usually have a few on the go. I agree with Gwen about having a good variety.

message 39: by Mark (new)

Mark Niles (mwave) | 9 comments I sometimes find a fiction and non-fiction at the same time are good choices. Often the non-fiction does not require as much attention to plot and character development as fiction.
I occasionally abandon one of the books. I wonder if this is the case with other people. Do you not finish a book sometimes or most of the time, or never?

message 40: by Kendi (new)

Kendi | 7 comments I can't read more than one book at a time. I've tried. I tend to mix up the books of I do that... So in order to keep them straight, I'm forced to read one at a time. If I find a book that I really want to read, and I'm in the process of reading a book already, I'll either stop reading the one I'm working on and read the new book, or I'll wait until I'm finished reading, and read it then. If I do the former, I run a risk of forgetting everything I read, so sometimes I have to start over. So you see how reading more than one book at a time is completely out of the question for me. HAHA ...Unless they're different genres... I dunno if that would make a difference for me or not... Hmm... I'll take this into consideration next time I want to try it.

message 41: by Mark (new)

Mark Niles (mwave) | 9 comments This is somewhat off subject, but I was wondering how often people
re-read books?
I sometimes read a book over after a year or two but occasionally after 20 or so years.
What percentage of your reading is a re-read?
For me I would estimate about 5 percent.
