Sweetp-1 | 402 comments Oh oh oh. I read this when I was teen. Still remember enjoying it. Wonder if I can track down a copy and convince Miss11 to read it.

Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments I tracked a copy down in our school library. Might be worth trying your daughter's school?

Ciska Will start this in the weekend.

Melinda Szymanik (writermel) | 175 comments interesting read. I always enjoy Sherryl Jordan's writing. Was a little gobsmacked at the things the 14 year old protagonists got up to (out all night, drinking etc..) with apparent parental approval and the maturity of the issues and themes included, as I think I wouldn't get away with writing this sort of thing today. Found the central themes and plot fascinating and fresh. I wonder if the mystical/magical themes presented as fairly acceptable within the reality presented in this book (and many other Jordan books as well as books by Margaret Mahy) is a NZ thing?

Sweetp-1 | 402 comments I'll have to pass on this one. I will put it on my list to read next year though if I can track down a copy.

Sweetp-1 | 402 comments I have a shelf for magical realism (https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...) though I am probably missing some I have read that fall in this category. Another NZ author who does this well is Juliet Marillier.

You raise a very good point Kathleen :) I'm familiar with magical realism but hadn't thought of applying it to my own book and I think you are right, there is an element of that in Jack the Viking. I read a lot of Margaret Mahy's YA in my teens and twenties and her books have been very influential for me personally.
