John Ranson | 15 comments When adding a book in a foreign language, "all data must be entered in the same language as the edition in question." Does this extend to roles for authors? For instance, should a french editor for a reference be listed as "Éditeur"?

That would make sense. Logically, the people most likely to be looking at the finer details of a non-English book are speakers or learners of that language (and various librarians of course).

another thread, posts 5 and 7 seem to be generic enough to apply in this case

Moloch | 3975 comments Interesting, I have always entered roles in English even if the edition was in a different language: my thought was that SOMEDAY the entire site will be multilingual, so these roles will get translated too.

But if my reasoning is wrong, I could start doing like John says for the languages I know

I still stand by what I said in January 2012: it should either be in the language of the book or in English. Personally, I am unlikely to get it right in any language but English, and I figure a correct role in English is better than one almost-right in French, German, Italian, etc. But if you are fluent in the language of the book, please feel free to add author roles in that language.

(This is largely because those fields are entirely free-form. For the format fields, the drop-down options are preferable.)
