A question for the group - as we progress through the year, is anyone going to adjust their goal upwards? I've set a very challenging (for me) goal but I'm making good progress on it so far. Granted, it's way to early to see what the rest of the year will bring, but if I keep on this pace, I think I will increase my goal mid-year to keep it challenging and motivating. Is anyone else considering this?

My goal was originally 100 but I have already read 8 books this year (The fault in our stars, city of lost souls, clockwork princess, clockwork prince, clockwork angel, I re read the lightning thief, and I read Night. so I think my new goal will by 110- 115
Yes, I was thinking I might have to raise the bar as I have read 2 books by now (my original goal was 12), haven't done so because I have 'The Count of Montecristo' on my list, so I will change the goal as I progress with it.
I might change mine, I'm aiming for 150. And I'm at 15 at the moment so if I keep going at that rate May up it. But there's always the times when everything's too hectic so I'm a bit wary so far!
I put mine up from 20 to 50 last year. I'm personally sticking to 100. But there's no issue with changing it :)
As January ends I feel like my goal is all wrong. My goal for this year is 50 but I have already read 6. Does anybody else feel like they should change their goal already?
My goal is 40. I made it to 41 last year but only because I had an unexpected day off work just before New Year. I'm on my 6th book so far which is pretty good going for me. Good luck to all those aiming for 100 :)

I told myself I'd wait another month in case the first month was just running start.
I was planning on 50 but I've already read 17. I think I'll keep it at 50 though, as that was my original goal and I wasn't even sure I'd make that.
I'm debating changing mine. Only because I fractured my pelvis and have been off work and got a load of reading done. But I'm now going back so my reading rate will go down a bit. I'm nearly a third through my goal of 150.

Ouch, Rose! I hope you heal quickly.

Thanks Faye it's on the mend now!
Hi Lorah! This is the first year I've recorded the books I've read. I was debating upping it. But am nervous in case I have a slacker month and I don't want too much pressure to take away the fun of reading. I'm at 43 books now.

oh no Rose, hope you have a speedy recovery! I plan on waiting until May or June to change my goal. Last year I changes my goal a few times.
Thanks Roseanne. Nearly all healed now! I might do the same, if in still at a high number by May I'll up it a bit.
My goal is to read 150+ books in 2014. I have already read 28 till date. I am reading mixed genres although I am a Crime Fiction person. I am trying to find varied genres. I welcome suggestions but I will not touch paranormal stuff or self help books.
My target is progressing quite well, I've set a challenge to read 10 books from the 1001 books to read before you die list too. Currently standing at 3 so far and 53 books towards year goal of 150.
Good luck with the reading everyone! Anyone got certain challenges to fit into the yearly goal?

Same Lorah! My rate hasn't been as high for Feb, I've just been so busy! Also I'm midway through a whole bunch so will finish them around the same time but probably in March!
I read my longest book of the year so far as well 1001 Arabian nights.

I'm aiming to read 75 books but hope to read more if things don't get too crazy here especially with my nutty kids. :)
Hi, I'm new to the group :-) I've set my reading goal at 100 books, I've read 36 so far so may extend it a bit. I'm 42, live in England, I'm housebound a lot with illness so I hang out with my Burmese cat and read a lot. I'm a big fan of my library (that's a day out woot!) and used to sell second hand books on a market stall before illness prevented it. I'm very active on Goodreads and always looking for new friends if you'd like to connect with me.
I have been thinking about it for a while now buy I finally decided to up my goal from 50 to 60 for the year.
Hi Maxine - I'm new the group as well. Someone who reads must have discerning taste. I'd be interested to know your list of your top 3 or 5 books.

Michele wrote: "Hi Maxine - I'm new the group as well. Someone who reads must have discerning taste. If I had to pick a few books I have loved recently they would be:
The Handmaids Tale - Margaret Attwood
Into the Darkest Corner - Elizabeth Haynes
Wool Omnibus - Huge Howey
Rubbernecker - Belinda Bauer
After The Fall - Charity Norman
Blacklands and Darkside - Belinda Bauer
Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman
Perfect - Rachel Joyce
Do send me a friend request if you like, happy to connect
Maxine,
I loved The Handmaid's Tale, but don't recognize the other titles on your list. If they are as good as the Atwood, I'm psyched to add them to my tbr pile. Thanks!

Oh I remembered a few more ones I loved:Mr Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
Blood Harvest by S.J. Bolton
The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty
The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman
Lexicon by Max Barry
I have been aiming for 150 books this year and have just not managed to list them all so far but I'm well over the 100! I seem to be reading very fast indeed at the moment and am now getting books for reviewing too. I shall try very hard over the nest month to get all the books I have read up and reviewed - I write these initially by hand so still have to put them on computer.... How many people still prefer to write on paper first I wonder?

I was writing a chapter of my book on paper but that was when my idea for my book wasn't as developed... I wrote it on the paper but the chapter was like okay... :( Then, I typed it, and so I sort of edited it along the way and then I came up with this whole new twist to my story and that's the only reason why I didn't abandon that book. Any of you writers out there -- Do you find yourself writing a book and then stopping about a couple chapters in because you found a new and better idea? That happens so many times. But now, I'm really thinking of settling down with just one book. Phew this was long. ;)

I don't write books but I do write papers for journals etc and frequently find that putting the ideas down on paper enables me to look at it in a different way - and then I start a new page and go off on that tangent.
somehow typing on a computer doesn't set the mind off the same way...
I'm aiming for 50. Almost there, but my kid is starting baseball soon, so alot of time will be spent at the ballfield instead of reading.
We do have a Writers thread in the General folder, which you might find interesting.
And all these increases in goals is great! Well done everyone!

Whenever I see such high goals I feel kind of bad. My goal this year are 20 books and I'm doing very well with that. I actually started with a goal of 10 books, because work keeps me occupied nearly 24/7 for 2 weeks each month and I started to go to school once a week at the end of April (so I have to manage work and school at the same time). So I wanted to have a goal I would surely reach. Now I'm proud that I've read about 15 books this year already. It's more than I expected and I didn't count all the things I read for school.
In total I really want to aim for 35-40 books but I don't think that will happen. Ive had a very busy school year and I have an even busier school year to look foward to!
Alessandra, do not feel bad about your target, everyone has different commitments which influence their own reading goals. 20 is great for a busy schedule, you should be very proud of your progress so far and if you have books that you read for your studies then by all means count them in :-)
So what you're saying, Alessandra, is that you've doubled your goal, right? That's fantastic! I think my first year on GR I read about 12 books. And I was really happy to squeeze them into my life at that point. Seriously, Good Job!
