INFINITE JEST!!! I love that book. :D

I read 94 in 2012, and just 50 in 2013 (took three classes and started teaching again). I think I'll set my goal at 75, since I read a lot of middle grade and YA (they go quickly), but that leaves me some room to read some longer works. I'll keep my fingers crossed that I've got my work/life balance thing in hand by this point!
My goal is 70 books - I know I could bypass 52 books, but I'm not quite sure I could do 100 what with full time work and karate, so 70 it is!
Planning on at least 50, as well as writing another novel and finishing a second draft of the current novel I'm working with. I hope I might actually get more. I read a book yesterday, whoop.
Holly wrote: "Sophie, I'm very jealous of your novel-writing, I'd love to write a novel!"It's hard work but great fun. I try to write for at least 2 hours a day alongside working full time.
Do you write at all?
I've dabbled in fanfiction, but nothing massively serious. I just can't find the motivation to keep on going, or even plan it enough to write anything
Ive just set my goal as 45. Ideally I would like to read more, but I think life will intervene! Planning to read a bit more non-fiction this year if I can. Just added Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedan to my TBR pile :) Good luck everyone :)
Clare, I know what you mean. With going to Uni this year, and exams and everything, I somehow doubt I'll hit 100. But there's no problem with dreaming :)
Good luck to you!
Good luck to you!
Your absolutely right Holly - good luck with your 100, im sure some of your study books could count towards your total :)
They definitely will when I get to university. It averages about 3 to 4 books a week when studying English. And that's not including secondary texts :3
I've got 4 offers, but my plan is Loughborough. It's odd, because its like the 'sport' university, and I'm not at all sporty. But I just got a vibe when I went there that made me think I want to study there :)
I'm a great believer in following your gut, so if it feels right go with it :) A friend of mine studied media and comms there and had a ball :) best of luck with Uni and the challenge :)
Thank you! It's odd thinking that next Christmas and New Year, I won't be living at home full time, and things will be so different. I frankly can't wait, but it's odd that this year will bring so many changes!
You have soooo much to look forward to, such an exciting stage in your life, exciting studies lots of new friends to meet, you'll have a blast :)
I am planning on reading only one per month. I used to read a lot more, then worked a for many years, and now recently retired, plan on getting my reading passion rekindled. The enthusiasm in this Group will definetely help!
I want to read at LEAST one book a month. I've already read three over my Christmas break (The Alchemist, Jude the Obscure, and An Abundance of Katharines) so I know this will be a small goal. I also want to have a big, long (at least long in my opinion) classic on the side that I can read little by little. Maybe Moby Dick.
I would like to read 70 books in 2014. I finished 65 last year so I think it's a realistic goal. I plan to read or re-read several classics, along with contemporary fiction and nonfiction. I've already finished two great books: Bridget Jones' Diary (can't believe I just got to this now; absolutely loved it) and Dirty Love by Andre Dubus III, one of my favorite authors. Just started The Goldfinch and know I will enjoy it as I am a big fan of Donna Tartt. Reality returns tomorrow as my work holiday ends, so sadly I won't be spending any weekdays totally immersed in books, at least for the near future!

I said I would read 125 this year as I am expecting to spend a considerable amount of time at home and immobile due to operation(s), but I got a response on the YouGov site where this was mentioned, that it was all too easy to read 125 Ladybirds... so I guess I should make it clear that the 125 (and the 100 from last year) are normal to long books - over 250-300 pages - and not Ladybirds! Short books will be added together but I don't much like them as I am unsatisfied usually with short stories.. unless they make up a complete set of such stories. I am a very fast reader - learnt to be taking English and history A levels and then a political/economics degree and a PhD! What do other people think is the length of a book to count for the challenge?
Ukgardenfiend wrote: "What do other people think is the length of a book to count for the challenge?"Every book counts. Last year I read mostly books that were in the range of 250-350 pages. I was also very interested in reading Goosebumps series(100-130 pages). But I'm no longer interested in them so it's less likely that I'll read short books.
I've decided to read big books on purpose, because they provide a different reading experience and it's a breeze when one goes back to short books. About 2 big books and 3 normal ones per month. 60 books a year.

Unless it's a competition and there's some kind of prize for largest amount of books read, I really don't see how it matters whether a book is long or short. Reading is reading, and if you're enjoying yourself and maybe even expanding your horizons a bit, then that's all that matters.
Someone who would set themselves the challenge of reading a large number of books only to fill up those numbers with books that mean nothing to them aside from being quick to read, well... that would be their own loss. If they actually enjoy reading Ladybird books, on the other hand, and feel rewarded doing so... hey, more power to them!
Either way, I don't see how it's anybody else's business. Read what you want to read, and count what you want to count. These are personal challenges, so you make your own rules. :)

Glad you think that too - I thought it was rather a mean thing to say - but maybe he was just a grumpy...

Definitely sounded mean to me! Maybe he was bored. It's amazing how many people have nothing better to do than to pester folks online. ;)

I agree with faye ukgardenfiend, I don't think length matters at all. As long as you have fun reading them, that's all that matters. :-) and yes it was a mean thing to say. He should keep his harsh opinions to himself. Have fun with your reads though!
Ukgardenfiend wrote: "What do other people think is the length of a book to count for the challenge?"I think any size book counts, as long as you're reading. This challenge is about pushing yourself and making yourself feel good. You'll know if you've accomplished it based on what you've read.
75! I fell short last year, at 34/100, but I discovered some amazing books, which is rather the point. Trying to stop myself reading too much YA this year! Damn you, Aussie authors, why so many great YA books?
I don't think length is at all important for this challenge. I tend to read some larger books but that's just because some of my favourite authors write longer novels. I'm just as happy reading a shorter book. To me, it depends on how the book makes me feel and how much I take away from it. Regardless of length, I hope we all find some amazing books on our journey this year.
Last year my goal as well as just books that caught my eye, was to read all the books on Patrick Rothfuss's recommended reading list that I had not yet read! I didn't complete it but I would like to this year as well as try to read at least 100 books in total. School and extracurriculars may get in the way though
