The ELA Regents, which you'll take in about 14 months (in January of 2015), has a number of different kinds of questions on it. One of the questions is called a "critical lens" question.

The critical lens question asks you discuss two pieces of literature from the particular perspective of a statement that is provided to you as the "critical lens." The critical lens statement will generally be an open-ended quote from a book that can be interpreted in many different ways.

We'd like you to consider this critical lens:

"The test of a courageous person is the ability to bear defeat without losing heart."

Use your current independent reading book AND Fahrenheit 451 to consider the critical lens above. In your response, be sure to do three things:

1. Summarize the quote in your own words
2. Formulate a thesis that connects this quote to your independent reading book and F451
3. Provide support that explains how the critical lens quote relates to each book by including evidence from each book.

Sojourner | 23 comments A courageous person that doesn't break there will. Montag is a courageous person that doesn't break his will because he is always doing things he knows is right without breaking his will power like burning peoples houses down and books. Clarisse is a very courageous girl because she knows what everyone is doing, such as burning books and having everything backwards is wrong. Because she believes in the old ways. In The enemy, the characters are very courageous because they have the ability to accept when people die without losing heart. Aaron, a character in the story goes throw allot fighting zombies and seeing people die right before him, This character eventually dies in the book but he lasted without losing heart.

Eric Rodriguez | 20 comments In my book "The Legend of Alexandros: BELEN" by A.C. Hernandez, a quote in the book that the main character said "Alexandros" was "I will kill the goblin king, even if it risks my life." This quote shows courage by Alexandros and he understands the worst thing that can happen but he wishes for revenge and he follows his heart and goes to kill him. In F451, the question "Are you happy?" shows curiosity about Montag's feelings. Montage burns books to be happy, since books have been making people sad (according to Montag and others in F451) Montag wants to get revenge to the books by destroying them. The books in the world of F451 is like the goblin king in "The legend of Alexandros: BELEN" because they both are trying to be destroyed by a character that has been a victim to it/them. The 2 quotes show dedication to their mission with their heart and are confident about destroying the enemy.

Charisma Ayers | 18 comments "The test of a courageous person is the ability to bear defeat without
losing heart". I think this quote means, to find a courageous person
you're looking for a person able to face defeat. Maybe they wont make
the same mistake twice, but at least they're not afraid to try once no
matter what the outcome. To bear with something is to put up with, so
somebody who can handle defeat without fear,or 'losing heart' is by
definition a brave person. Losing heart i think here means losing
sleep,or having fear in your heart. There are examples of people and
characters who are not afraid to look fear in the eye. This quote can
be connected to my independent reading book and Farenheit 451. This
critical lens quote relates because, in Push, Clarisse Jones is a
courageous young girl with the ability not to succumb to the negative
influences of her community. She still attends school despite being
told not to by her unstable mother, again showing signs of bravery at
all costs. Even though Clarisse faces defeat and criticism daily, she's a courageous girl who wont lose faith. The same can be said for the Clarisse in Fahrenheit 451.( Everything got erased by accident after this point so, the writings not so good -____- ). She begins Montag's non book burning adventures, knowing how illegal it is to promote such an act. She continues her antics in school ( THINKING!!)and asking questions, bearing defeat from her teachers and possibly the government, daily. Not being discouraged even though you could be shot down, is brave. Two instances of people/characters that ARE courageous.

Samantha | 15 comments Courage is the ability to act regardless of the feelings or potential consequences. Courage is following your intuition when the facts are against it. Courage is saying 'I am sorry' when you are at fault, 'I don't know' when you don't and 'I love you' despite the hurt, anger or fear. Each day we speak the truth with integrity, own our responsibilities and reach out to another ... we are building courage muscle. Montag is courageous because he realized that books is an importance to society and that the government has corrupted their minds. Instead of sitting back and doing nothing Montag got up and took a stand.Because of his actions he ended up going through many trails and in the end everyone died, Guy Montag the courageous civilian survived the war. through a misleading adventure.

Kea Adams-edwards | 9 comments This quote means a person who is brave has to be able to handle and tolerate their self being defeated in a battle with out losing their self and not lose sight to who they really are. This relates to faranheit 451 because Montag had a battle with working as a firemen in a society where books are illegal and he was secretly hiding books which takes much courage for someone to do in a society like this where you have to face concequences of being burned. At first Montag lost sight to who he really was. At the beginning of the book he liked the feeling of burning books and then he realized later on books are important.

message 7: by Shianne (new)

Shianne Perez | 15 comments This quote is saying that people who are brave enough to fail and try again are people with courageous hearts . This relates to Faranheit 451 because when Montag was risking his job , his life , and his place in society just to hide books in his home he was taking a risk doing all of those things. This relates to my book Eleanor & Park because the main character Park took a risk letting the new weid girl sit next to him on the bus with all of the mean kids watching him .

message 8: by Travis (new)

Travis | 7 comments "The test of strong individual is to bear defeat without losing heart" In the book Undercover cop by mike russell this quote would mean, even if one loses everything they still haven't lost themself. In the end of the book mike loses trust with the mob and gets shot in the back of the head because of it. however he still recovers and is still alive while maintaining his cover. In fahrenheit 451, montag feels he has lost everything when mildred leaves him because of him reading books. However he finally finds a group of people that memorizes books instead of reading them. Therefore this quote means if one doesn't give up hope they are a strong person.

message 9: by Dameon (new)

Dameon Lawlor | 17 comments This quote means to never stop trying and to keep going and no matter what to not be afraid to try stone thing. This relates to faranhite 451 because montage risk his job and his life to people want to read books and get smart. How're he finaally finds a group of people that like books.
